You might be a child in the 70s if:

I think the Frito Bandito was voiced by the great Mel Blanc (a.k.a. Bugs Bunny and a zillion other characters) Man I remember these ads. the stereotypes certainly wouldn't fly today but we were more innocent back then. (Except the hippies!) :-0

You might be a child in the 70s if:

So THAT'S where the "cheeseboogie, cheeseboogie!" SNL bit came from!! Used to watch SNL a lot back then as the Belushi brothers graduated from the same high school I was in. Jim is out in Oregon on his ranch raising legal cannabis in green houses now. When starting college in 1975 at IBC in...

    Baltimore Bridge Collision and Collapse

My brother got paranoid some years ago and had a Katolight 40kw natural gas powered generator installed for the family home. Was afraid Com Ed was going to have roving blackouts in the heat of summer. Has a 231 cu. inch V6 engine in it. It tests itself once a week and is incredibly silent...

    Baltimore Bridge Collision and Collapse

Still don't know how many are dead at the bottom of the river in cars plus the missing workers patching potholes are probably dead. Will likely take some time to get a death count. Kurt

Super Big Bertha fails spin test

Shoot, I just make sure the CG is right with the loaded rocket and will be fine. If I gotta add nose weight, no big deal. Just add a bigger motor if one wants to fly higher. Swing testing is for modrocs. Certainly can't be done with larger projects easily at all! Invest in a good sim...

When the batteries wear out on the ISS?

That sounds like a good explanation to me. The stuff I'm using in the lightweight R/C use are probably Lithium polymer. But...... Those Russian and Elon Musks' rocket can be so big! ;)

When the batteries wear out on the ISS?

I looked online and that's what was posted. Might be an outdated link but on top. Lithiums are pretty light hence their use in R/C stuff. Could project some sort of lithium packs used on the ISS. Kurt

When the batteries wear out on the ISS?

Was watching some of the online feed from NASA on the ISS and think it's nice they have a Russian to English translator when the Russian cosmonauts are communicating. I was wondering, it was said in the "early" days nickel-hydrogen batteries were used on the ISS when orbiting the "dark side"...

Movies that scared the crap out of you?

The first Alien movie I saw with some of my college friends on the big screen when it first came out. When something bad was happening, we'd scream like little girls. Movie trivia: In the scene where Sigourney Weaver fights the Alien from a yellow mechanical device that evens up the odds, it's...

    How do fins fail?

I didn't go through the whole thread but if I recall, if one does through the wall plywood fins, they're better off to withstand flutter. In the case of using plywood fins, if they do the 1/3rd's, 2/3d's and full span lamination with lite fiberglass cloth and epoxy lamination, it will withstand...

Well that didn't work... Failure Gallery

The Titan missile had some problems during early development but it was initially intended to launch nuclear missiles to Russia. By the time it was co-apted for Gemini, the bugs had been worked out. Yeah, the early Vanguard program had bugs too as they were trying to rush it since Russia got...

Well that didn't work... Failure Gallery

Surprised they weren't prepared to spray water around the surrounding area to prevent fire spread. Yeah I know, once APCP starts burning, it's almost impossible to stop. Although with a nuclear Minuteman missile, I've read when the inertial guidance determines the motor fired long enough to...

Blue Raven blew BP charges instantly when switched on

Good gosh! Great point! I live out in the sticks in a semi rural town and no problem here for me with I, H or less motors for testing. Bigger stuff, I drive around the corner to a municipal golf driving range. On the south side of the driving range off to the side, the city reserved a portion...

Blue Raven blew BP charges instantly when switched on

I and others have been burned on this back in the day hence my stressing it. Many DIY electronics (P6K) were notorious with this. Fly without a tracker and worked fine nominally. Certainly you're being facetious. :)

Blue Raven blew BP charges instantly when switched on

I always, always, always ground test a new altimeter with bare ematches to make sure they will perform nominally. On the other hand, if one is using an Rf tracker, deployment altimeters can be messed with if they aren't designed properly (grounded appropriately on the pc board, nothing the...

No More D12-3 at Hobby Lobby?

I remember when the B motors were like .45 cents apiece when I was a kid! That shows my age.

    EMatch Failure To Ignite

Give people the source of an ohm meter that can read that low. I had trouble finding mine years ago and doubt the seller is still in business. It's important the meter doesn't use much current or a good match will pop!

How many people have built a space shot rocket?

Ahhhh, once an object gets up high and wants to orbit, it has to tilt over and achieve 15k to 17k+ mph orbital velocity to stay in orbit. I believe that is why one sees commercial and NASA launches go off and curve upwards to orbit. They don't want to go "superfast" down low due to friction...

    Black Powder charge

The advice I will give is try to screw-in the charge containers on a bulkhead to press fit the plastic canisters into them. On very small DD rockets with Estes "type" tubes, it's hard to do that and I had a free "micro centrifuge" canister just wired to the altimeter blow the wall out of the...

older altimeters still good? How old is too old?

Dang! I should have put my foot down when my late wife told me to get rid of my old machines. I think I have an old win 95 laptop. Am out of town now but will have to check when I get back. kurt
