    Thrustcurve Open Thread

Hmm. For me it’s more about *filtering* than sorting (in OR, mostly). In my opinion, Q-jets are qualitatively different from other motors (either Aerotech or otherwise) and I often want to be able to explicitly include or exclude them. When some are listed as Quest and some as Aerotech it...

    Zylaxus: a dubious build thread

I got the joke, but it did raise a real question: how important is it for perfect contact on the fin tabs? How does strength vary with gap size? In this particular case the question is moot, because I seem to have gotten good contact everywhere, and I *assume* that the strongest bond is with...

    Zylaxus: a dubious build thread

Honestly, I don't know how well that works. If there's a gap between the fin and the motor mount that is bridged by wood glue, how strong it that?

    Aim-4 G Super Falcon Build

Dunno how I missed this thread but this a very nice build. In my experience, Q&T shrinks plenty. I haven't tried to measure whether it shrinks more or less than regular TBII. Maybe I'll try that when I'm bored. Anyway: the thing about Q&T is not that it doesn't *shrink*, but that it doesn't...

    Zylaxus: a dubious build thread

Mounting the wings, at last I had to move my cradle far up the body tube to clear the front mounting points of the wings. And so I stuck a screwdriver into the front to weigh down that end and keep the whole thing from tipping over to the left. As a final check of tab fit (and first step of...

    Thrustcurve Open Thread

The problem is the *most* of the Q-jets (not the legacy Quest motors) are listed under Quest, and only a few are listed under Aerotech. In my opinion it would be *helpful* for the Q-jets to be distinguishable, somehow, from the other Aerotech motors. But in any case they should all be listed...

It's not clear to me that would solve the Quest/Aerotech issue for Q-jets, though.

    Zylaxus: a dubious build thread

Nifty. Everything seems to be fitting optimally so far. Wings come next. 2 months of tedious prep and now the fun part is blowing by in a few days. Then the *real* tedious parts start: waiting for painting weather, painting, waiting for it to dry, *masking* (oy), more painting. Rockets are...

    Zylaxus: a dubious build thread

In every discussion of launch lug placement, the consensus is always that it's just not that critical, and there are no precise rules. More often than not, I go with the single large lug somewhere between CG and CP, but that wasn't possible here. Two small lugs is my second choice. The one in...

Sorry I don’t know the mechanics of it. @SiboVG or @JoePfeiffer could answer that. There are apparently some heuristics within OR to normalize the manufacturer names. We could (and probably should) handle the Estes issue, but there are no hints on the Q-jets to allow us to properly identify them.

    Thrustcurve Open Thread

Two related issues regarding the manufacturer field that I discovered in the last couple of days. I noticed these while looking in the OpenRocket motor selector, which is of course just based on data taken directly from thrustcurve.org. Estes vs. Estes Industries, Inc. Notice those 5 motors...

And now the four small cage pieces are on, starting to look like something. I'm not always a huge fan of foamboard fin guides but this one proved quite helpful so far.

New guy trying to impress the kids needs help with weight calculations

Eh, doesn't look too bad to me. A -6 would be better, but I think this is safe to fly.
