    Rocket exhaust dynamics question

Yeah, mach diamonds are awesome! I'm familiar with them and why they form. My question is more about why there is a transition from the mach diamond part of the flame to the lower brighter/wide part of the flame. Here's another good example: In this picture, it kinda looks like the flame is...

    Rocket exhaust dynamics question

On a possibly related note- I've noticed some motors have appear to have a gap between the nozzle and flame. I've also been curious about why this is. Here is one example:

    Rocket exhaust dynamics question

I was looking at pictures from a rocket I flew a couple years ago and it reminded me of a question I've been wondering about for a while. Just aft of the nozzle the exhaust appears straight and clean, then several inches further down the flame changes character completely, becoming brighter...

Where to put camera and how to get a shot of the ground at apogee

Have you seen the tiny fpv racing cameras (like the runcam split)? The sensor/lens is separate from the board. I would just securely mount the lens externally pointing down and put a shroud above. I think it's low enough profile that it should be fine. Also, if you're looking for a good rocket...

The Avionics Bay Thread...Post your Photos!

Thanks! The antenna actually pointed down, filled the small space bet the av bay and the top of the motor. Head end deploy with a drogueless descent then chute released by cable cutters. Battery was actually epoxied to the mount for extra security. Video report from the project is coming soon

The Avionics Bay Thread...Post your Photos!

This is probably my favorite one I've made. Took a lot of careful designing to make sure everything fit. It's flown it twice in a minimum diameter 54 to over 20k.

smallest gps that can run off of a small watch battery?? any exist??

It doesn't run off a watch battery, but I just saw Wildman is releasing a new gps system for rockets- the Fluctus. It's smaller and more affordable than most of the other systems out there. Looks really cool. Not released yet but available for pre-order...

    L3 Project (video report)

Rocketry has been a huge passion of mine since I was a little kid. It sparked a love for science and set me on a path toward Stanford. In spring of 2023, I worked on my L3 project, a culmination of everything I'd learned over the years. Thanks to everyone who helped along the way! Super grateful...

Showoff Your Other (Non-Rocket) Hobbies! *Eye Candy Please!*

Most of what I love doing involves fighting gravity in one way or another. I love rock climbing: I'm also a pole vaulter: Lately I've been really into creating both digital and physical mountain art/models from LIDAR data:

G motors for staging? Can't find any

I recently bought and am building a "Two the Limit" rocket kit from US rockets. It's basically a large version of one of the staged Estes, using the ejection to light the sustainer. Problem is, I can find any G motors that work for that. The intrructions recommend a G30-0, but I can't find it...

    AT I-211w question!

So I was assembling an AT I211w and I noticed that 3 of the grains were the normal grey color, but one was a lighter shade of grey and had white specks mixed in with It. Did AT make a mistake and put a different propellant grain by accident, or is this fine. It also has a code on it- o627c. Here...

    Materials question

Here is a video of last years project. It is essentially the same design of the sustainer for this project https://youtu.be/7-Zeh6YXjJ0

What is the record on snow?

    Rocket Powered Sled

Yes, I'm planning sled 2.0 with a longer burn and more power.

    Rocket Powered Sled

This was an epic project I worked on over winter break. I attached a H123w motor to the back of a snow boat sled and road it down an icy road. Don't worry, we took many many safety precautions and we're sure to to much testing before. I was protected by 3 layers of thick coats, ear protection...

    Materials question

Thank you for the advice. We will definitely get better materials. We will make the fins from the plywood you were saying and find a new lace to cut them. As for tube, I'm thinking blue tube. I figured the tubes we had were too weak. We do have some experience, I'm junior level 1 and have done...
