My collection took a turn a few years ago …
(That mini is a 2-stage, I have a standard Mini Max that got overlooked, and a 4” Mega DRM stashed away unbuilt. I really ought to build my standard DRM kit.)
The recovery gear is down between motor tube and body tube, it never feels the direct effect of the blast. I’ve done this on another squat rocket, which had “typical“ full base on shoulder. Just leaves some soot on the nose cone base.
I have not flown it yet, but decided to do a bulkhead disc on bottom of the nose cone, attached with JB Weld. I extended the motor tube to within ~1/16” of the disc, to allow recovery gear to be packed easily, and with no wadding.
I use the 18/20 RMS in my Mars Lander. The C5-3 might be OK, but it was not out when I built it. I have heard the C6-3 in a Mars Lander is not wise. The ML screams on a D13 reload. I won’t use 18mm Q-Jets, I have had too many failures.
Well said. I bought the ReallyKooStuff Soviet N-1 3D printed model because it was a well executed model of a beautiful design, not because I am inspired by Communist nations or programs.
I finished assembly on my Estes Scorpius. (Oh wait, forgot launch lugs!)
Now comes the long wait for nice weather, so I can shoot some paint. If we get a day that is sunny and no wind, I’ll do the dash outside and back in, to do a quick primer coat.
The only one I care about is the MAV. I adding some detail to mine, and painted it. I might buy another to get spare legs (those pads on landing gear are fragile). The nose cone is worthy of a scratch-build “something”.
I decided to open up an old kit a few days ago and start building it — the Estes Scorpius. I am doing this build a little out of order. Tonight I am sealing the fins before gluing them to the tubes. This isn’t usually recommended in kit instructions, but these fins are close to each other, and...
Cool approach to using kit’s components and be able to fly on bigger motors. I might do the same on my DBRM. I bought Stickershock for it, so I hate to add in more expenses for upgraded fins and CRs.
I have used basswood ”spokes” on cardstock centering rings on standard Estes kits (no...
A couple years ago Hobby Lobby was clearancing Booster-55s for 99 cents. They put two on the shelf at a time. I would buy both. on my next visit, two more. This went on until I had a dozen, and wised up to their little game! 😀
I have built 3-4 so far. Fun little builds. Here are a couple:
I bought a ticket to see it. :)
If you come to Denver, it is part of the current Apollo Exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. It is a beautiful model. The only clue to it being a flying model are the motor tubes at the aft end, rather than engine bells.
The Apollo Exhibit is...
I finished the 8 built-up (cardstock and basa ribs) fins on my Semroc 1:70 Saturn 1B build. This task is sort of like hitting your thumb with hammer … it feels so good when you quit. :)
And then I applied the 5 wraps! Instructions called for using white glue. Sounded too messy, so I used...
