    Windmill of Desssssstiny!

Go ahead and post it to the Estes group. I am on Facebook, but I'm not in that group. No worries about crediting me beyond maybe a link to this build thread. I don't mind keeping a little mystery about my identity.

    The 2024 Newton-Second Tally Thread

Another day out at 60 Acres, but I only got one launch in. On the other hand, it was a 3-motor cluster, so it punched above its weight. ...... R-Motor ............................ 163840.0 Ns ...... Q-Motor ............................. 81920.0 Ns ...... P-Motor ...

    Fafnir, a 3" Dragon-Themed Rocket

A quick discussion of the name. Around the time I was building the original, my son was deeply into dragons, so that's why I built a dragon-themed rocket. He did the illustration on the original. I didn't want to do something obvious (Smaug!), so I went to a slightly deeper cut. Fafnir is a...

    Fafnir, a 3" Dragon-Themed Rocket

Fafnir was one of my more beloved rockets. It was a 3"/38mm beastie made from a mailing tube, with plywood bat wings. It was a workhorse of my fleet since I could fly it on either a medium to full G on a Class 1 field or up to low I's on a high power field (more thrust isn't great--the body tube...

    Windmill of Desssssstiny!

Gosh, has it been nearly a year already? This project sat for a while, and I finally got it back out on the field for a mostly successful second flight. Major changes since last time are: The booms are retained to the core with light line tied to the post The sails are retained on the boom with...

Thoughts on the middle east conflicts.

This was discussed pretty thoroughly after the message you quoted. These are two of the responses (that don't involve politics) on the general outlines of the response were given. Making it clear to the Iranians that we not only know where you were but also where you went afterwards will likely...

When is the Starship orbital launch?

I know this isn’t an answer, but probably the same energy source as powered the hydraulics. An added bonus if a massive boost in efficiency. Hydraulics are great stuff, but hydraulic power units are something like 50% efficient, as opposed to 90%+ for electrics.

Post a pic that makes you LOL

The real issue is that nobody can really explain what woke is, just that they don’t like it.

Thoughts on the middle east conflicts.

I expect that whatever happens, it won’t be a surprise to either side. I would expect that Israel has already shared the plan. On second thought, Schumer’s speech may have been intended to communicate displeasure with the plan. I think your theory is more likely though.

Thoughts on the middle east conflicts.

It will be interesting to see if Israel does attempt to take Rafah and if they do, what our response is. Netanyahu had gotten away with tweaking US presidents for a long time.

When is the Starship orbital launch?

    I stand corrected.

    Come on, Boeing.

For the record, the current explanation being floated is that a flight attendant bumped the seat controls, which pushed the pilot into the flight controls, which caused the dramatic movements. I agree that this explanation doesn’t pass the smell test. Like why would the seat controls move the...

    Come on, Boeing.

I'm with @Azamiryou on this one. Reaching for the seat adjustment switches and hitting the wrong button that you can't see shouldn't cause dramatic flight events that land people in the hospital. It's a somewhat different story if there was some kind of electrical fault in the seat adjustment...

When is the Starship orbital launch?

I was pretty sure that regardless of who did the certification, the primary events on an L3 cert flight all had to work properly (ie planned chute deployments happen, no main at apogee, etc.). The hard part would likely be the PDR, CDR, and FRR meetings.

Thanks to both of you. It’s not a big rush, but I would like it to fly the Windmill of Destiny. 60 Acres might be too crowded for that rocket until after the TARC deadline though.

60 Acres Park, Redmond, WA (Seattle area)

I have a need for one D12-0 motor, but all I have in stock are D12-3’s. If anyone who will be at 60 Acres wants to trade a motor, let me know. If not, I can add it to my next motor order. Also, if anyone needs a long pole to save a rocket from the rocket-eating trees, I’ll have my 20’ pole...

What did you do rocket wise today?

This is just my loopholery tendencies rising up, but technically speaking the courier's slogan doesn't say what they do with the package when it's urgent. Maybe the unspoken complete sentence is "When it's urgent, we sit on our duffs." Or perhaps "We'll only move it when it's urgent. Until then...

Yep, Newport is usually just down the field from us. We used to launch from the middle of the west side. A river landing recovered a mile or two downstream encouraged the team to the east side of the field.

What I did today -instead- of Rocketry.

Cured or uncured? Uncured can't be good for you. Cured is more or less inert, at least if you measured carefully and mixed well.

When is the Starship orbital launch?

Handling the difference in thermal expansion between base metal and tile is also a hassle. Not insurmountable, but hard when you start having delta T's in the range of 3000C (from ~-270C in space to +2500C during reentry).
