Going to give CWF another try

CA is cyanoacrylate -- Super Glue, although a very thin version used for these sealing the paper edges. I've thought about the glue method you describes, but I am very good at making a complete mess with glue. :)

Going to give CWF another try

I'm using the typical Bob Smith Industries Super Thin CA. Now with that said, I didn't use a tiny applicator tip, and I did squeeze it on a bit heavily as I forgot this stuff "paints itself". Also, this bottle is perhaps 18 months old now. (Stored at room temperature.) I wonder if it has...

Going to give CWF another try

I did some priming yesterday. (And realized I am really out-of-practice with many things in model rocketry. I didn't have much experience to begin with -- just six rockets so far -- but I have forgotten so much over the last nine months!) While I did just a light coat of Duplicolor FP101...

    That's an excellent idea!

Going to give CWF another try

And here's my first try with papering the fins on both sides. It went well. I'm a little out-of-practice with thin CA, apparently, as I put on a bit much. I forgot this stuff paints itself; no need to squeeze the bottle. I did not realize how easily CA sands down with 800 grit. It's nearly...

Going to give CWF another try

Neil, have you ever had any issues with the label paper peeling up, perhaps in the center where it isn't sealed by CA and causing a bubble in the paint?

Going to give CWF another try

Thanks Neil and Chris for your suggestions and help. I also want to give papering fins another try, as well. :) This stuff is difficult to photograph, but here is a before photo of my test balsa triangle: I sanded with 220, then finished up with just a few swirls of 400. Here's what I...

Going to give CWF another try

My technique so far involves papering the leading edge; that is, always wrapping the Avery label around that edge, which makes trimming complex areas difficult. For some reason I've always thought papering the leading edge was important. I've never tried doing the two sides individually. Do...

Going to give CWF another try

Wild, when I was writing that I didn't even think that I hadn't expanded it at least once. I apologize..... Carpenter's Wood Filler. I specifically am using this one:

Going to give CWF another try

When I last was working on a rocket (late February, it's been an unusual last few months, obviously), I swore I would never touch CWF again. I've always just had such problems with it. I abandoned it and switched to papering fins using Avery labels, which worked well, until I realized that...

    Zephyr build by newbie BAR

So awesome....when I get more experience, the Zephyr is probably going to be my first large rocket due to Tim's videos.....I wouldn't be in this hobby without his videos.

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

I picked up some BIN as well. I am playing with some scrap pieces of balsa. It does dry really fast -- just a bit longer than CWF -- but still really fast. It also sands really, really fine, far finer than CWF. I didn't get any of my usual gouges on my balsa that I tend to get with CWF...

What did you do rocket wise today?

Messed around with BNSW's use of construction adhesive for fin fillets. Very promising! Also tried his suggestion of BIN primer for balsa sealing. (See this thread for details, starting at post #30: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threads/estes-conquest-build-and-musings.151560/)

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

OMG. I picked up a caulk tube of the Loctite PowerGrab Express Heavy Duty adhesive this afternoon and just finished doing some fillets on a small rocket. Wow! I can already tell these will most likely be the best fillets I have ever done. This stuff is so easy to work with! My sister is a...

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Thank you so much for sharing this fillet technique. I've very much been in an improve-my-fillets mode. I was thinking of going down the epoxy route, reluctantly, as I am trying to minimize my use of that stuff. Now if I can only remember where I put my caulk gun... :)

Epoxy over wood glue for a fillet?

Oh as far are why for a LPR? Practice mainly and just to see how to compares to wood glue and Fix-It epoxy.

Epoxy over wood glue for a fillet?

Thanks all....it does indeed look like Quick and Thick is a separate product from Molding & Trim/No Run No Drip glue. But as you pointed out, I can get Quick and Thick from Lowes for $4! :)

Epoxy over wood glue for a fillet?

I know many people have had great results with this, but I tried it once and my results were poor. However, several things may have gone wrong. I had to order a bottle off of Amazon, and while the code on the bottle did not indicate it was old, that stuff was REALLY thick, almost like really...
