    On the Edge.....A Material Question

OOOOOOOOOOO, Ken- great post!!!!!!!! Thank you. I've been looking EVERYWHERE for kevlar or nomex chute protectors. You know what I did recently? I called up a few companies that sell nomex in large quantities from the Internet. I asked for samples from each. I ended up with enough nomex chute...

    All going well!!!

Hahahaha- "Dangitt, I gotta re-sand this whole rocket before the guys on the forum figure out I sprayed the wrong paint on...these crackles just don't look right. Is it supposed to flake off??" HAHAHAHA. Just kidding, Paul. We're giving you a hard time.

C'mon buddy...we're waiting on those pics. 7 days is a lot of painting, even for Carl and myself... LOL.

    On the Edge.....A Material Question

The 1.9 oz ripstop feels "normal". Like what they have in fabric stores or what you have on, say, a windbreaker jacket. the 1.1 oz feels really light. It is commonly used for kite fabric in modern kites (I of the generation that had tissue paper kites with balsa frames and hand-made tails)...

    On the Edge.....A Material Question

QUICK DISCLAIMER: I don't want to insult the work of the various parachute companies. They certainly have their place and I own many of their chutes. I don't mean to trivialize their work. My version is simply a tried-and-true, quick method of making long-lasting, good-performing chutes for a...

    On the Edge.....A Material Question

I usually buy my ripstop at Joanne's fabric stores. They are all over the US and also have an online store. Shhhhhh...here's the secret: If you sign up on their mailing list (your wife will probably know this), they will send you a 50% off coupon almost every month! I use that and buy 2 yards at...

    On the Edge.....A Material Question

Jason: I'm glad that helps. It's the best decision you can make. And I'm sure you have figured out that by using pinking shears, you don't have to sew hems. The action of the serrated shears keeps the edge of the nylon from fraying. It's the secret that allows you to cut out an chute and use...

    On the Edge.....A Material Question

Paul: I agree with everything said so far. Just a quick word about parachutes- It's funny to me how little thought people put into 'chutes; especially when launching in the lower-motor-size range. You just figure, "go with the plastic chute Estes or Quest supplies with the kit, they know...

    Retro Rockets from the 50's

Dick, Your model came out FANTASTIC. Holey Moley! What a great result. You must be incredubly jazzed that it's dome and came out so perfect (and nervous that you have to fly it). Good work. I can't say enough. Can't wait to hear the flight report! Good luck!!!! Marc

    Rubbing Alcohol??????

However, adding a teeny bit of sugar to your pasta sauce will bring out the flavors. Marc

    Retro Rockets from the 50's

To piggyback on Ken's "eleventy coats of primer"... I would suggest you look into buying the silver metallic touch-up finishes sold at auto body supply stores (and on the Internet). You'll find they look much more realistic than the typical silver spray paints you find at home supply warehouses...

    Retro Rockets from the 50's

Wish I could help you there. Have you given it a swing test just to get a ballpark idea of its stability? I know Rocksim is not much help because of the fin configuration and all the custom parts... I think between your weight and a swing test, you'll get a as-good-as-you-can-get guesstimate.

    Retro Rockets from the 50's

Wow man, it looks GREAT!!! really it does. How did you end up doing the transition? PS- my opinion is to go ahead and paint the side pods. It'll be a huger pain to do it after they are installed. And fromt he looks of it, your model is really turning out beautiful. I wouldn't want to denegrate...

    G10 fin question

Thanks to all of you guys. I am off to sand G-10 fins. I'm working on a PML Bullpup and I'll post some pics when it's done. Thanks again. Marc

    G10 fin question

Please forgive my obvious ignorance here but: I have never built a PML kit before. My question is, on those G10 fiberglass fins, are you supposed to sand an airfoil shape into them like any normal wood fin or are you supposed to leave them "square". And if so, can I just use normal sanding...

    CYA and Balsa Fins

Just a quick comment on CYA filling on balsa fins: I recently did that on an estes Black Brant. I discovered that, on areas where I had sanded the primer almost all off, (like leading edges), the paint I used reacted with the CYA and started crackling. Though I must say, it did have a very...

    Retro Rockets from the 50's

Dick, I scrounged around to find the proof of what I believe to be the case; that the the pods are half-cones sitting flat on the skin of the wing. I took the liberty of putting up some photos from TV screenshots. Check 'em out: https://www.marccoreylee.wso.net/rockets/xl5.htm Marc
