What do you do (or did) for a living?

I worked for NASA as a co-op from FTU/UCF in 1974/75. Then after graduation and a year as a civilian for the navy on jet engines in Jacksonville I got my dream job back at KSC with NASA starting i July 1979. I started in orbiter PVD, Purge, Vent, and Drain, engineering which was responsible...

    TV Show Theme Songs

I know the lyrics still from my youth to it. A season or two in they added the professor and Mary Ann. I know some others as well such as The Addams Family and spotty memories of a couple more. As for music I really enjoyed The Wild, Wild West intro and The Munsters was good. MTM and All in...

Guess for new rockets in the Estes 2024 Catalog

Or had to cut your finger apart from a part because the CA glued it to your finger.

    1:100 scale Mercury Redstone

I was there when they did it but cannot recall much other than remembering how cool it looked.

The car from your past you miss the most?

Since I started driving in 1968 I have obviously gone through many cars. I have had three that I liked the best. The first was a 1973 V6 Mercury Capri that was made in Germany. I got it in late summer 1974 and a month later driving to work at my NASA coop job at KSC from Orlando had it almost...

Saturn V that's uses multiple engines

Back in the mid to late '70s I took a Centuri Saturn V, 1/100th scale, and modified it for 5 first stage engines. The kit had vacuformed nozzles of thin plastic so I cut them up to fit around the engine tubes and they looked fairly good. I flew it 3 or 4 times and it flew great on 5 C engines...

    sanding sealers.. all the same?

In the old days when I started flying rockets I used Pactra balsa filler coat followed by two or three Pactra sanding sealer coats. Of course they quit making it long ago, I think, so when I started doing some building about 10 years back I found the Deluxe Materials Sand 'n Seal. I've used it...

    Rebel Moon

I watched it tonight and enjoyed it but it is almost totally derivative. Take a load of Star Wars and throw in some Star Trek and Battlestar and it is pretty much that. They even had a light saber and the recuperation tank with a scene similar to the Darth Vader burning scene and the Luke in...

Black Brant XII Build Thread (Tips Appreciated!)

I plan on picking one of these up when they are out at hobby suppliers which they aren't as of 12/13. I bought a flat plane sanding device off Amazon from Du-Bro in the medium size. I bought it specifically for when I build this but it will be good on any larger sanding project. I know...

Estes bringing back the Orbital Transport

I finished up my Super Orbital Transport this past week and finished my Super Mars Snooper back in May. Neither has flown yet but here they are. Nice to build kits I built when I was just starting in rocketry in the late '60s and in "SUPER" form too. I need to get the originals again just for...

    List your fleet of rockets

I have been building model rockets since about 1967 off and on. I did almost straight through starting in 1967 into the '80s when I took a hiatus when moving to Vandenberg with NASA but started heavily again after returning to FL two years later. But sadly congenital neuropathy in my...

Sold Estes 1/100 Apollo 11 Saturn 5 Kit New

I have recently taken stock of what models and rockets I have in my rather large stash and realized I can never build them all. Therefor I have been selling many to reduce the quantity and have this special edition of the last release of the Estes Apollo 11 Saturn 5 for sale. I am going to...

    Painting

I use Rustoleum gray primer and spray the tube. Then the old elbow grease and sand off most of leaving just the spiral filling. Sadly it typically takes two to three coats to fill it in. I've tried the Elmers method and also spackling once and it was difficult for me to get it reasonably...

    Loki Research Motors/Cases

Well about 20 years ago when I was preparing to get my Level 2 I was using a Loki J528. I had it in my recently completed Public Missiles Black Brand X. At ignition the engine blew up breaking the casing around the rear C-ring groove and blowing the nozzle and propellant onto the street. We...

    Thermodynamics!

You can use geothermal if the source is very hot for large scale power generation. The primary difficulties are getting to it and extracting it. It also tends to be very corrosive so you'd either have to filter it or design the system to be able to operate under those conditions.

Is AC Supply legit? I've never heard of them but they have what I want.

I don't order frequently but have 3 times over the past couple of years and they were great. Quick fulfillment and all the orders were over $100 so free shipping. About the best prices available as well.

Do model rockets create fire? If so, should one refrain from launching one in a low grass field?

Recently I have been buying nomex blankets precut in specific sizes from eRockets to use to protect the chute. They work fine but I am only flying LP these days so they usually aren't too big. I attach them to the shock cord or somewhere else with a nomex line. He makes them in a number of...

Do model rockets create fire? If so, should one refrain from launching one in a low grass field?

It was simply the ignition but everyone was watching the flight and so that is a bit of an assumption. There was no DT on it and it might have been an RC glider, I don't recall. By the time anyone looked back at the pad it had gotten rather large and although we tried to put it out it was...

Do model rockets create fire? If so, should one refrain from launching one in a low grass field?

It was caused by the engine exhaust exiting onto the dry brush. We were on the edge of the field in a mowed down section of short grass but it was a bit windy and the conditions were amenable to easily starting a fire. I remember one other down in Palm Bay about 20 years ago or so flying off...

Do model rockets create fire? If so, should one refrain from launching one in a low grass field?

They most definitely can start a fire at launch and I was personally responsible for one around February 1981 in Orlando unfortunately. We held a contest and I was flying a glider I believe. The large field had tall grass/weeds and they were very dry because it was winter with no rain in a...
