New Motors Certified, April 2024 (Aerotech)

I would be more than willing to share the processed test stand data with you. There must first be some discussion of what data goes into constructing a "typical" thrust curve and precisely how that curve is constructed. For G and smaller motors there are a minimum of 10 tests, which, at 1000...

New Motors Certified, April 2024 (Aerotech)

My second message describes the Aerotech new motors certified on March 30 and April 14, 2024. The Aerotech M2700W-PS is the first reload kit designed for the new 75/10240 hardware, which is more than 48.5” long with the forward and aft closures. The total impulse is 10,322 N.s with an average...

New Motors Certified, April 2024 (Loki Research)

The Tripoli Motor Testing committee met on March 30, 2024 and certified 6 new motors. We will break up the notifications by manufacturers, and start with Loki Research. The first certification is the Loki N-5500LW, a 4” reload kit made specifically for the CTI Pro-98 6g XL hardware. The total...

    Rocket exhaust dynamics question

My guess would involve the temperature of the exhaust gas, which, in some cases, is so hot directly out of the nozzle that none of the atoms in the exhaust flow has cooled enough to have its electrons drop down one or more orbital levels and release that energy as light. I've always used that...

Can a space ship with a solar sail tack "upwind"?

Last April I was visiting a Special Projects lab at the NASA facility in Huntsville, where research was being done on a solar sail, which would use the "photon wind" from the sun to power a spacecraft. I asked whether such a craft was limited to moving away from the sun, or whether it might...

    Removeable fins on BIG rockets

I came up with a removable-fin design that I have used in several rockets since 2018. The fins are built from the 1/4" honeycomb foam with carbon fiber on the sides. The fins are attached to wooden stringers that support the centering rings, and the body tube is not attached (permanently) to...

    AeroTech Open Thread

I think I might know what might be going on. I can access ncrockets.org from both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, but both pages come up with the warning "not secure". I don't know what danger(s) it might entail to log onto such a site, but perhaps your web browser has settings that reject...

    AeroTech Open Thread

Tripoli East NC is an organization at which both NAR and TRA members are welcome at all times. All of our launches permit EX motors. I don't know why you are getting errors at ncrockets.org, but I do recall that the hosting organization for the website and users group is locked in mortal...

    What are you listening to?

I was lucky enough to see Pat Metheney live in Memorial Hall on the UNC-CH campus in mid-winter 1971. I don't know whether Lyle M was in the band at that time or not. The cool thing about Mem Hall is that it has the best acoustics of any venue in the Southeastern USA. Pat was able to lower...

The Tripoli Motor Testing Committee met on September 20, 2023 and certified the completely redesigned Q-jet by Aerotech F41W. In order to address reliability issues, they have replaced the clay nozzle with a phenolic nozzle, substituted regular White Lightning propellant for the Fast White...

EVENT Freedom Launch 2023: September 2-4

I tried to sign up for LCO from 11 am to 1 pm on Monday, but I goofed somehow and ended up as RSO for 11-12. Doesn't matter, I'll be up front in the "seat of power" from 11 to 1, and I'll inspect rockets and push buttons as needed. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you! Alan

    Aerotech 2050X

If you find that Gorilla Glue "foams too much" then you are using too much of it. Spread your glue layer thin. I've been using Gorilla Glue for all my bonding because I can't find GA Max anywhere around here. GG works just fine.
