Post a pic that makes you LOL

Looks like Alaska residents also got a great view of the eclipse.

How many people have built a space shot rocket?

A failed recovery and a crater is unfortunate for everyone, but it happens and it itself will not get you uninvited back to FAR. Otherwise FAR would be empty on weekends.

The Avionics Bay Thread...Post your Photos!

This was pretty cool. The UCLA rocket team made a custom CO2 bay to eject their 6” nose cone. Used four CO2 cartridges that were 100% redundant.

Need help measuring ignitor current draw

I did this a few years ago in a very crude way to compare some ematches. I used a set of analog amp meters (0-1000ma and 0-2a and 0-5a) and an iPhone recording slo mo at 240fps. It was not very scientific, but it was enough to convince me that the "good brand" of eMatches all consistently fire...

    Not Another Metric Thread

This was priceless. One of the funniest SNL skits in a long time. “We fought for our rights to have these measures”

How many people have built a space shot rocket?

@VernK , Kip updated flight #3 altitude from Saturday to the 233,313’ on Twitter today. Still an amazing flight.

How many people have built a space shot rocket?

If you want to talk “Virgin Galactic Space” or the USAF 50mi definition, instead of the Karman line, then Kip has clearly done a solo “Space shot rocket”. His two stage rocket is pretty straight forward (6” to 3”) as is his propellant. It is his exceptional engineering and attention to detail...

Project Sasquatch (24" diameter Madcow Squat)

Bryce, this is an awesome beast. I remember the day you flew your L3 out at ROC and nearly landed right back on the pad. That is still legendary in our house. Congratulations on a successful flight and the tall mug of beer prize at the end. Your builds always inspire us to go bigger or be more...

We did this before, Xyla's at it again

I think she is doing great. Her target demographic is not the over 50 out-of-touch aging rocketeer white men (myself included), so if she missed the mark with you it's because she IS trying to change that image of model rocketry and inspire a new generation that is turned off and shut out by all...

We did this before, Xyla's at it again

Haters gonna hate. Are we going to do this FAR discussion every time Xyla launches something? FAR is not a TRA prefect or a NAR section club. FAR is an experimental research facility governed by licensed California Pyrotechnic and BATF operators. It is an offshoot of Reaction Research Society...

    Government mandates, forcing and coercion.

Yeah, change sucks. I'm going to keep riding my horse and carriage on LA freeways until ya'll stop honking and screaming at me about "cars only". Also, we should bring back the LA smog from the 1980's when I could save money on cigarettes by just going for walk. Going a whole year without a smog...

3 Two Stage Questions: Shear pins, Flyaway rail guide, and Sustainer igniter installation

Oh, so close! I’ve been to the “eMatch fired but didn’t ignite the sustainer pellet party.” Now I always use two igniters (in parallel) in the top of the sustainer.

3 Two Stage Questions: Shear pins, Flyaway rail guide, and Sustainer igniter installation

Yeah, seems obvious to me. In this case the university team was using a commercial flight computer (I don’t recall which one), but confessed they only had a few lockouts selected (altitude and angle?). When the sustainer nose ripped off it damaged the sustainer forward closure, so when the...

3 Two Stage Questions: Shear pins, Flyaway rail guide, and Sustainer igniter installation

Jason, make sure you have a MINIMUM velocity lock-out set in the staging logic, in addition to the booster burn-out detect, tilt angle lockout, and minimum altitude. We had a team out at FAR last weekend with a two-stage vehicle ready to go to 180K feet and a few seconds after launch they lost...

    Hello from Chennai, India

Welcome! You have a front row seat to SDSC/SHAR to watch India make history. Are there any launch clubs in Chennai yet?

    Rocket motor help.

Ok. Let's keep playing... Instead of a giant rocket to lift 3 trillion tons of iron from earth, you could just push Mercury into the sun. It looks like Mercury has about 2.54 x 10^20 tons of iron. A much smaller rocket could be used to give Mercury a shove.

    Rocket motor help.

Alexa? You need to start talking to smarter AI bots. Looks like the rocket would need to weigh 27,180,000,000,000,000,000 kg assuming we can make some motors with uber-ISP. Also, after you get done building the rocket you might want to check on this...

The Avionics Bay Thread...Post your Photos!

Stripping and crimping a lot of ferrules and then getting that AvBay to fit will work up an appetite. I suppose you could also use the Swedish Fish as a type of pincushion, as long as you lick them clean before putting them in your terminal blocks. They are each the perfect dimension to hold...
