Crazy Idea? Using Upper Chute Apogee Deployment to Shake Loose Fin Section & Attached Lower Chute

"Not a Rocket Scientist" had a successful maiden launch a few weeks ago. But the apogee ejection charge for the fin section, which contained a deployment bag for the 8 foot chute, severely charred the bag and even created a small rip in the bag (chute was not damaged). Since the fin section...

Creating a Nosecone for an 8" Dia. Big Bertha?

Any thoughts a to creating a nosecone for an upscale Big Bertha? If I do this build, I plan to use 8" dia concrete form tubes as I used for "Not a Rocket Scientist". Upscaling the rocket to an 8" diameter would make the rocket 10 feet tall. I'd want to weight the nosecone so that I have no...

Repairing a Cracked 1/4" Plywood Fin?

Cracked a fin upon landing this 45 pound rocket- it still feels quite sturdy, but flexes a bit compared to its neighbors. What are best practices to repair a crack like this? Thanks!

Alternatives to Elmer's Glue All Max for Grain Bonding?

Wondering if this product is still made, or what is out there on Amazon is old stuff. Any proven alternatives? Should I just buy Elmer's from an Amazon seller & not worry about it? Thanks!

Drag Separation- Your Best Guess (or Calculation)

My version of the Gary Larsen cartoon, "Not a Rocket Scientist". At apogee (about 1,200 feet) this 45 pound rocket will separate into three parts under individual parachutes: nosecone, the long & crooked middle part, and the fin/motor section. the fin/motor section is 36" long and weighs 18...

Brain Freeze on Sampling Port Sizing

Here's what I want to do- four (4) sampling port holes for an 8" dia electronics bay which is 13.5" long. I tried to use the calculator referred to below, but it isn't making any sense to me: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threads/vent-hole-size-calculator-spreadsheet.42898/ Also tried using...

Suggestions- Don't Want to Break Mercury Escape Tower

6" dia. Mercury capsule from Boyce Aerospace. SLOWLY building the dual deploy rocket. Should I at all be worried about the escape tower being broken during the chute deployment events? Would you suggest bringing the capsule down on its own main chute, possibly configured so that it lands at a...

Amateur Rocketry Powerpoint Presentation Suitable fo High School?

I've been asked to give a presentation to a high school class in the fall. Besides showing a few of my Youtube POV rocket launch videos, I'd also like to present an overview of amateur rocketry & the basic physics involved. Has anyone already created something like this? If you're willing to...

Removing West Systems 206 Hardener from Carpeting?

Kicked the pump can over & didn't notice it. About a 6" circle of sticky hardener on the basement indoor/outdoor carpet. Thankfully, I didn't kick over the resin as well! Wiped it up as best I could. What do you recommend to clean up the remaining hardener from the carpet? Thanks!!!!

BILUSOCN Electric Matches: Can They Be Pyrogen-Dipped?

Just curious- I have used them with 100% success for ejection charges. Wondering if they could be dipped in pyrogen to make for an airstart igniter for 29mm AT reload. Has anyone tried this?

Any Reason a Minitimer3 Should Work But Minitimer 4 Won't?

Might just be coincidence, but I now have had two flights with different rockets & different Minitimer 4's where the staging or airstart didn't fire. I had used a Minitimer3 for several staging flights with the one rocket- upgraded to Minitimer4 and staging didn't work. Two weeks ago, tried a...

So- Why Did My Fake Engine Bell Rip Off?

When I was a high school student, I wrote research papers on "The Krushnik Effect" and "Determining the Efficiency of Ducted Systems in Model Rocketry". I don't think that either of these phenomena had anything to do with my plastic flower pot-turned fake engine bell being ripped from Marvin...

Tangible Benefits from Glassing Phenolic Tubes?

The other option I'm looking at for my two 6" dia. Mercury Redstone & Honest John projects, for which I already have the custom nosecones & the fins, is to fiberglass phenolic tubing, as opposed to waiting for Blue Tube to restock. From using phenolic about ten years ago, I know it can be...
