    Level 1 Build: The Zephyr!

I saw this one pop up on the Apogee site and I was hoping someone would build it. I'll be anxious to hear how it flies for you. I'm sure as a few more of these get into the wild and the open rocket files start floating about someone will simulate it with trimmed fins to eliminate the cut out and...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Dr Wogz, thanks for the suggestions. I did eliminate the upper quick clip and attached the chute lines directly to the swivel. I also like the idea of keeping the nomex down low. I still hope to do this with a JLCR so keeping the nomex out of the way after apogee but before the chute releases...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

I packed the chute and wrapped it in the nomex and it's a pretty loose fit. Loose enough that it slides all the way down to the top of the motor mount. I'm sure there will not be a problem getting the nose cone off, blowing lightly through the motor mount and it pops right off, but I'm worried...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

I'd still like to pick up a Jolly Logic Chute release and try to get it incorporated into the recovery system for a poor man's dual deploy. I'm assuming it'll be connected to the quick link too. I'll try to get a bit of sanding done this week and start on priming and paint. Has anyone had any...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

I also started looking at the recovery components. Keeping with the theme of things I have the garage or basement I salvaged some kevlar shock cord from the Arreaux, and found a couple of swivels and a quick link. The first kevlar cord is mounted to the motor mount and I attached a swivel to...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Ok, got to work on this a while. I think the Gflex epoxy may not have been the best choice for external fillets, they are taking days to dry and seem like they will be a bit soft to sand cleanly. We'll see, might be time to get out the high build primer. I was able to salvage an Aeropac retainer...

    Unique Parachutes

Newbie question here, besides being really cool, what's the functional difference between the different types of chutes? Does the giant hole in the middle encourage it come come down straighter?

By the way Nytrunner, your's looks awesome. Nice work.

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

My wife says it needs to look like Evel Kneviel's Snake River Rocket, but I'm not convinced I can swing that. Got to find a source for metallic gold starts. Ha.

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Ok, did a bit more on the Leviathan last night. I think now it was a mistake to build the fin assembly and open up the tube slots all the way to the bottom. I couldn't get the body tube back it's correct shape. I don't think it's a deal breaker, it'll just require a bit more epoxy in the tail...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

I do like the idea of a case and reloadables, but I think I'l like to build a 38mm or 54mm rocket to fly at the Tripoli Launch at Hartsel CO this summer so I may try to get a case system in a larger size. I'm the Scoutmaster of my son's troop and after doing a few low power launches with the...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Thanks for all the input. A follow up question on conformal vs buttons. I was leaning conformal becasue I like that they are surface mount and the fairly large gluing surface seems like it would spread the load out a bit. The cardboard body tube on the Leviathan seems fairly flimsy and the...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

I'll have to ask about the H115DM motor. I think I was looking at a similar chart of the Apogee website and came to the same conclusion regarding the Single Use H motors. Figured I'd try to avoid the HazMat shipping as well as support a local guy and make the drive down to Apogee in Colorado...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Thanks for the link to the .ork file, I'll use that one to figure the CP. I'm starting to look for a single use 29 mm H motor that I can use at our site. I'm thinking an Aerotech H125. Thoughts? I'm also comtemplating a Jolly Logic Chute Release to try to increase the chances of recovery...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Finally up to the questions and thanks in advance if you've stuck with it this long. Probably some fairly standard pics for this forum. Ha. I downloaded Open Rocket and found a nice looking Leviathan on Rocket Reviews. I should have no problem staying under the 52 oz limit but I'm a little...

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

The kit came with a motor block, but I did leave it out. Thanks for the heads up. Ok, next step was to try my hand at some epoxy. Mostly this was just to see what it was like to work with it since it seems most folks agree it's probably not nessesary on a paper and wood model. Here is started...

Next step was to start attaching the fins.

Howdy, Leviathan Build, and some questions

Happy New Year everyone. This is my first post to the forum. So first, introductions. I live in the Denver area and I've been out to the C.R.A.S.H launch at Bear Creek with my son's scout troop a few times over the years and in the process I've built quite a few small rockets and one true Mid...

    Arreaux with Aero Pack

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond. As for overkill, yeah the Aero Pack is probably excessive, but I saw one at the local launch and decided it's pretty cool, so I ordered one. I also ordered several ft of kevlar cord and I was planning on using that. It looks like filling the...

    Arreaux with Aero Pack

Howdy, I'm building my first mid-powered rocket and I decided to build an Arreaux. I have the kit, a 29L Aero Pack retainer, and a RMS 29/40-120 motor housing. I've been reading through the instructions and the forum before I get started and I have what I think is a fairly simple question, but I...
