    Air Starts rules/regulations?

Did some looking around but didn't really find anything comprehensive. What are the rules/regulations regarding air-starts? For instance: Permissible to fly a 3 stage utilizing J's with 2 air starts? Permissible to fly air-start in cluster formation? thanks Frank

Calculating approximate g-forces exerted on a surface.

Short story - I built a rocket, that carried a lander, that carried a rover. The lander was 5 lbs. It flew for about 3 seconds then CATO'd due to motor casing failure. My original calculations and notes are long lost. I'm putting together some facts about the project and needed a refresher RE...

Calculating approximate g-forces exerted on a surface.

Sooo - Rex what you're saying is I got to the correct answer ~ just took the 481 mile route as opposed to the 1 step route?

Calculating approximate g-forces exerted on a surface.

I'm trying to calculate the ** approximate ** g-forces exerted on a surface. I know there are variables that will sway these calculations that may not be represented here (effect of the weight of the surface, drag, etc.). Looking to get an approximation BUT willing to hear all arguments and...

LOC Ultimate Build - How a 3D Printer Will Make Your Life Better

3D ABS printed material does quite well in extreme heat. Most of the parts that survived my CATO were the 3D ABS printed pieces. Several were in DIRECT line of fire with the blowout gas plume and remained fairly intact. I was very surprised. The base of the lander cooked for several seconds in...

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

After a third attempt I was able to get flight data from one of the airframe Raven 3's and data from one of the lander Raven 3's. The lander and airframe triggers performed properly despite their obvious CATO inspired challenges. Lander flight data: When we recovered the airframe assembly...

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

I received got word back from Aerotech on the failure: "I have looked at the motor remains that (customer) sent in. It is my conclusion the motor failed at the seal disc liner interface due to either a cracked liner, damaged o-ring, seal disc backing out of its position. In the liner or a...

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

Finally got around to digging the motor casing out of the airframe - shipping to Aerotech. Here are some high resolution shots of the casing and forward:

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

Thanks all for the kind words - much appreciated! I concur with your advice. Thanks! Yes I had 2 Fruity Chutes in this configuration: Rd/White 8' for the Lander recovery, and a Yellow/Black 5' for the airframe recovery.

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

That is the igniter - it hung in there for a little. I used the supplied igniter, it went into the motor with no resistance whatsoever. Didn't use any tools to place igniter.

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

Thanks, yes a seal disk was used. It was an Aerotech J570W. The assembly was reviewed a few times by myself and again by a couple folks attending and running NARAM58. All appeared to be correct (no missing parts, extra seals, extra o-rings, etc.).

Lander/Rover project ends in catastrophic failure (AKA: Boom)

3 yrs in the making; destroyed in 5 seconds :( Always a chance this can happen - I happen to won the lottery this day. Made a 6.5 hour trek to NARAM58 this weekend to launch my lander/rover project... The solid rocket motor assembly (appears to have) failed 50 feet off the ground and the...
