    2nd AV bay contest

I've mostly given up on wood for AV bays, i'm making mine out of plastic and fibreglass these days :) I can mill, print or laser them myself so I wont be posting as someone could probably use your service more than I!

    AV Bay Contest

Finally got around to posting mine up, i've been meaning to for a month or so. http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?51137-Mad-Cow-Tomach-Build&p=712131#post712131 It's been tested! I also hung 90kg off it, I was worried the plastic between the rods and the eye bolt...

    Mad Cow Tomach Build

I also redid the AV bay for this a month ago, but didnt get around to posting it. This one is a single piece 3d printed AV Bay (includes bottom cap.) It carries a Telemetrum 1.2 and an AIM USB 2.0, with a microswitch for disabling the AIM. There are two separate batteries, a 2S...

Progress! Seeing as the launch is this weekend, I thought it would be a great idea to test fit everything together and get the ejection tests out of the way. I had some issues, I was using a 1/4" quicklink on the AV Bay to the drogue, but there was just no way to get the shock cord, ejection...

    40W CO2 laser engraver & cutter - US source - $529 shipped

I found this interesting: "Kevlar can be laser engraved and laser cut. However, Kevlar does give off extremely hazardous fumes (cyanide gas) when it is vapourised" So if you use a laser on kevlar, please use a carbon filter on/in your extractor.

Check your sent messages folder, it could be that you have a bunch of sent messages sitting there wasting space.

Not to be too spammy, but I came across this today: http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-a-laser-cutter-fume-extractor/?ALLSTEPS Should be no volatiles and particulates in the air if you build one of those, other than the CO2/CO thing... should be safe to even vent that indoors. Its not cheap...

CNC Lasers and CNC mills/routers are not mutually exclusive in my mind. I'm looking at getting a 150W 600x900mm bed to complement my 1200x550x150mm cut area cnc router and 3d printer. Each can do things the other only dreams of. My biggest issue right now is the wharf will charge me over a grand...

Tubing questions for a new guy

Yes, BT will go supersonic - its very thick walled! Treat bluetube like cardboard tubes as far as finishing goes. Fill the spirals, or not, then prime and paint :)

Tubing questions for a new guy

Bluetube is really easy to work with, just dont let it sit on an angle in hot or humid conditions or you end up with a bit of a banana. Store it flat or perfectly upright. This is from experience :(

How long will motors be good for?

If they've been kept dry and sealed, sure, if they are not too crusty just sand the surfaces.

3D Print: The Magician & The Magician's Assistant

All up about $2. The power required to print it and the other parts was $2-3 - thankfully the carbon tax has been repealed and we've gone from 28c/kWh to 25c/kWh. The body tubes came out of an estes inventor pack I bought 3 of for half price years ago which i'm only just starting to make any use...

3D Print: The Magician & The Magician's Assistant

I've been wanting to do a 2 stage black powder rocket for awhile now, both minimum diameter and with the coupler/transition, nosecone and fins all 3d printed from ABS treated with acetone vapour to make it smooth and glossy. Seeing as the rocket sims to a little over 1000m (3000ft) I figured it...

Fiberglass Centering Rings - how do you get them on perpendicular?

I draw a circle around the tube it's going on where the base of it will be, then make a 1-2mm thick block of masking tape - the CR sits on the masking tape ridge and the glue cant escape whilst doing that. It's always worked for me. The best way is to just make your CR friction fit it and line...

If you're in a residential setting and venting out a window, please do tell your neighbors you're about to do some laser cutting and there will be lots of smoke coming our your window. I was amazed at the sheer volume of smoke generated by cutting the plywood I did. If you just set fire to to...

If you need a spent forward closure I can wash one up (so it doesnt set off any alarms) and mail it to you if nobody in Canada has one. I have a few lying around. I've taken to keeping spent CTI parts for this reason! The 6GXL would be really awesome, I got mine before the extended body was an...

I am looking forward to this one too, It's going to be interesting to see how much that skewed fin affects the launch. At some point before the launch I want to strip thepaint off the fin can and finish filling the weave of the cloth in properly, we'll see how time goes though.

CNC router/mill can do airfoils, laser cant. Lasers can do wonderfully small kerf, CNC cant (well it can but you have to go stupidly slow) Do not underestimate the volume of smoke. Laser cutting a 4'x3' sheet of 3mm plywood (lots of parts) with a very strong extractor on it we still managed...

Oh god, this is so wrong its not funny. Firstly, polycarbonate shouldnt be cut because it strong absorbs infrared radiation?? thats the entire point It gets hot, it turns to liquid or gas and gets blown out the bottom by the air jet... this doesnt happen if it cant absorb any of the energy...
