I have a Boxer and I love her. She is such a good dog and listens very well. I take her everywhere. I would say get a Boxer but they do get big so make sure you want a big dog.

I'll put in another suggestion for a black lab. Mine died recently (stayed with my dad after I got married, not fair to keep a big dog in ana apartment). They're great dogs, nice to kids, full of energy, love the water, and would happily go on rocket launches with me.

Yellow labs are fine as well. Then there are chocolate labs. They are pretty, friendly and dumb as a pile of rocks. Since it's a fairly desirable color for Labradors, bloodlines are really inbred.

Oh, did I mention black labs make great watchdogs? They'll let you know when the mailman or UPS guy is bringing you the rocket you ordered!

Sheesh, all this talk about dogs, and I own two cats!?!

I believe you are from the South Shore. Here is a link from a breeder we have purchased a Pomeranian from. He is based in St-Isidore not far from you and specializes in small breeds (so you don't have to walk your dog at -20C!). He has Schnauzers, Shetland Sheepdogs, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers and Miniature Poodles.

Hope you find what you are looking for,

Regards

Bulldogs! my wife and I are on our 4th & 5th. They are expensive, short lived, have medical issues, and not very smart. But they are great! Great personalities, very lovable/loving, very silly dogs.

Every time one passes, we look at other dogs but always come back to bulldogs.

I'll go pat mine now.

Mark

It's Dobermans for me

Lucee a Black and Tan , about 65 LB. and loves to drag rockets back by the chutes( kinda hard on the fins )

Izzee a Fawn Dobie( very rare ) at 11 months old and 100LB's , is full of ****(yellow stuff) and vinager and just may DIE if he chew on the leather chairs again.

Hell, even my cat thinks she a Dobie

Don't get me wrong - God bless all of you and your dogs.

But, although you are frustrated with the dogs that "chew on the leather chars", I read that as if that behavior from a dog is relatively normal and/or expected.

I'll *never* own a pet that destroys my home or its contents.

I say adopt a former racing greyhound.

They're bigger, but really don't need much space. Basically a 75 pound (our current one) couch potato -- males generally in the 65-85 lb range and females smaller, but they're bigger than their weight because they have almost no fat. Will love you to death, as they really don't get much personal attention (love) at the track. Not hyper, usually great around kids, almost never bark, need a walk or two a day but not a ton of exercise since they're really sprint dogs. Getting along with cats depends on the individual dog and their chase drive, but both of ours have gotten along fine with our cats. Definitely NOT a watchdog ... "Come on in and take the silver and china as long as you pet me"

Must have on a leash or fenced area ... no homing instinct to speak of and you never know when they'll take off after some animal or other (and you won't catch them).

Greyhounds don't need much space when inside but they need a LOT of room to get out & run! (Even if they once raced, they still like to get out & exercise...)

And no, you won't catch them...probably not even in your car! :p It is amazing just how fast greyhounds can run.

They are *extremely* mild mannered and well behaved. I don't think I've ever heard one bark...

Hey Wogz,

the best dog will adopt you. When I was first married, I adapted a four legged four year old, a Beagle. She was our daughter and was a great retirever of lost airplanes and rockets. Right before we lost her to cancer, Barney (see my RCU avitor) shows up at the front door. He is a 2 year old Labrador who is slightly on the crazy side. He loves everybody, especially the mailman who spoils him rotten. And kids? At any given time, I have half the neighborhood in my yard playing with Barney.

However, he loves to run and loves water, so we have a big yard and a swimming pool, just for Barney, and well, the kids too.

Being young, he requires a lot of training which goes to the wayside when a squirrel or rabit shows up. I have enrolled him in many retriever training coarses not because I'm a bird hunter, but an RC plane / Rocket enthusiast that has considered using his God given abilities to aid in my search endeavors.

My wife and I still do not have children of our own, but now have three strays who share our our house. A 9 yr old Shitztu (kinda of a moody dog with enough health problems to keep my vet finacially secure, and 1 yr old Brandon Setter / Chow mix that has become a very beautiful dog. She, Bailey, is a better pointer and retriever than Barney and minds very well.

These strays were house broken, and seemed to be very negleget by their previous owner and are very, very faithful to my wife and I. I wouldn't give them up for the world.

Raising dogs is just like raising kids. We also are foster parents and also raise our nephew. So we are "experienced" in child rearing. Since we deal with a lot of childern who have special needs, the dogs are great with helping the children adjust to our home.

No matter what type of dog you get, like kids, they will develope their personalities around their environments. I would try for a small dog since you are city dwellers, but even they require a lot of walks and attention. And as far as destroying the house, well that is part of "parenting". Our kids do just as much damage if not more in the way of borken doors, furniture, and my dogs have never clogged the toilet so bad that it required removal of the entire sewer pipe and a new toilet.

One thing that I sugest, keep the dog on a strict diet. NO PEOPLE FOOD and use premium dog food. This keeps them healthy, moods in check, the feces are easy to pick up, and they do not develop that dog smell.

Okay. I am going to leave my two cents, being the animal lover that I am.

First of all, DO NOT buy your pet from a pet store. They are closely related to puppy mills (where most of their "stock" comes from). Do, however, get a dog from an animal shelter. Take a look at several dogs. Ask to take them out of the cage. You could even look at adopting, possibly fostering, a dog from a rescue organization (some breeds have their own organization. For instance, there's an organization just for Golden Retrievers and another for greyhounds).

Once you find the "right" dog, you'll know it. I know it sounds corny, but it's true.

Secondly, I love mutts. But, that's another story.

Good luck on the search for your new best friend!

I agree adopting a dog is the best way to go. I like golden retrievers and chows. We have a golden retriever/spaniel mix and he's the best dog in the world. :D

I have a fear of dogs, so anything that can get above my waist is a no-no. That said, I'd like a toy fox terrier (friend has one, i like it) or a cairn.

So, my wife & I are talking & watching TV last night...

She leans over and says i should ask my 'Rocket guys' what dog we/she should get..

So, what dog should we get?! (Breed / type / style / etc..)

We have an Australian Shepherd. Aussies are incredibly smart dogs, but also very high energy. We thought we knew what that meant, until we got Emma.

If you get a purebred of any sort, research the breed thoroughly, as they all have their quirks. Herd dogs (Aussies, Border Collies, etc) can be nippers, and some aren't good around kids -- you may not have kids, but your friends, relatives and neighbors might. Plan accordingly.

Also, if you go with a purebred, buy from a reputable breeder. When we settled on an Aussie, we found nobody locally had a good reputation, so we got our dog from Colorado. We drove out, spent a few days with some friends, then came home with a puppy.

Don't discount rescue and shelter dogs -- my brother and his wife have had three dogs, all from the local shelter, and all are very good pets.
