When ever I buy a new kit. I'm always looking for ways to turn it into somthing else. Or make it better. When Carl did his post on the cluster bomb. I had a Idea. And this is what I came up with. A Cluster two stage. On estes motors. The booster is the cluster bomb. Turned around backwards. And the reducer is used to fit a bt-55 tube. I had to cut it to length. From top to shoulder is 1.5" and the center ring is made from basswood. I wanted to try and make it as lite and as strong as I could with out adding alot of weight to it. The tube inside of the reducer is a 29mm tube from PML. The coupler on the second stage is a spent 29mm single use case. Cut to the length I needed. With a 29mm tube inside of the bt-55. The the motor tube used for the substainer is a Loc. 24mm tube. That fits the spent case. The booster has two wraps of 3/4oz. fiber glass and the fins are made from Bass. With 3oz, glass over them. Then I used the estes motor hooks to retain the motors. It will fly on 3 D-12's two of them will be pluged. And the other will have a 3second delay for deployment. I will use a perfect flite timer to light up the second stage. I will install this in a pml. 54mm coupler. This fits the estes tube. I dident have any Loc 54mm couplers to see if they fit better then the pml. The timer is a brake wire. I will have two little post coming out the side of the tube, And when the rocket leaves the pad. It will brack the wire and start the timer. This will be set for two second. At this time it will light the second stage, So far the weight of the rocket is7.1oz. But I still have the chutes and shock cords to install.From the rocksims program. If I can keep the weight at 11.5oz. With out the motors. It will go 3200' on these motors. Not bad for estes motors.
