How many rockets do I need?

my wife is actually amazing regarding my many hobbies. she actually just bought me a darkstar mini for my birthday. She asks the question with a smile, it's my job to come up with a clever answer to keep her smiling :)

Well, your wife has a PAYING JOB related to rocketry... So that may help... :p
The answer depends on what she tends to collect.

For example, "One fewer than you have pairs of shoes, dear."

-Kevin (who, fortunately, never gets asked that question)

There's an upper limit?

Wow...

Lol, yeah. Unlike yours, my wife does not fly rockets - she just humors me (mostly). I've been informed rockets are unacceptably taking over one of the downstairs rooms in our house, particularly the large ones, and need to be relocated to the dungeon.

But, um, need ? (maniacal laughter ensues)

This is the correct answer.
Fortunately, my wife has her own rockets, and her build pile is bigger than mine is. I have a slight edge on the shoes though.....
That's some kind of strange reverse universe right there!

I am lucky, my wife would never ask that. She would only ask where we are going to put them all with the understanding that means we need a bigger house.

My wife has "secret powers" (and guns) requiring me to call on special forces...

Yeah, Sharon makes the money and I spend it. My rocketry allowance is my social security check. Hers, wait a minute, she doesn't have one. Maybe that's why her build pile is bigger than mine.... Well, maybe not bigger, mine has a 13 ft. DS Ultimate that she bought for me last year at Airfest. Hers has a Gizmo XL DD that's bigger than she is. She also needs to build her 5" Jart, another Squat and a Lil' Rascal. We will be building the carbon fiber Mongoose 75 together, I couldn't afford it on my own.
Oh, the trials and tribulations of being a sex slave, maybe I will go shopping tomorrow....

Please take this post in the humorous manner it was intended. Remember, this is the internet....

The wise ass answer is as many as I can get.

The reality is none. I define need as what is required to keep my family safe and sound. Anything beyond that is a want, which is obviously different.

The reality is that I like rockets, and I want more than I have. I would like a full collection of AT, CTI, and one of the snap ring motor manufacturers so I can fly whatever I want/can afford. I would like one of the upcoming Missileworks RRC3 based telematics units, throw in a nice Feathetweight Raven, a Telemetrum, and a Marsa. I would like a massive quantity of parts so I can build the many designs I have

My wife is asking...

The answer is simple really. -Togetherness. :)

Your wife needs to become more involved with your hobby.

The first time we visited Wildman's trailer, my wife came out with a Wildchild. Tim was having a sale, and she can't pass up a good sale.

Since that time, she has purchased a Jart, a Mini Eagle Claw, and a Mini Competitor. (all on sale of course).

There is absolutely no reason why the number of rockets needs to be a concern.

You do bring your wife/family to every launch... no?

Mark, of course, has posted the pragmatic and correct answer. But it's not the emotional one. :)

Kevin, I tend not to be overly swayed by emotion. That sort of thing can lead to poor decisions.

Case in point is the so called go fever, or the "just launch it" mentality. I bit on that a couple times early on in my high power experience. Cost me a couple of rockets too- that will not ever happen again due to go fever.

Kevin, if I had your money I would have a ludicrous arsenal of rockets :). How much did the super family trip cost again?

According to Rocket Reviews I have 452, but I think about 400 of those are decorating the trees around B6-4 Field.

My wife didn't like it at first, but she's become much more accepting of it over the years. A big breakthrough came when we went to NARAM together -- it finally convinced her that I wasn't crazy, and that lots of apparently sane people were involved in this hobby. She still has zero interest in it but she recognizes that it makes me happy, and that seems to be the most important thing about it for her. She did have some specific issues with it early on, which I have to admit were valid. She was worried that it would be a repeat of my previous involvement in bicycle road racing and would be a seemingly endless drain on our budget. Rocketry's comparatively low cost and better management of the expenses on my part this time around helped to ease her mind after awhile. Things also got a lot better after I set up a workshop in a back room and stopped doing all of my building on the dining room table.

I hear ya! I'm not afraid to pull something off the pad. It's cheaper that way, and less likely that someone gets hurt!

You'd be surprised on the first, and the second? Didn't cost me much at all....

Kevin, just messing with you as I am sure you know.

For most people, it's N+1... For me, it's more like N+18

No sooner than I get one, another idea strikes me, and I have to pursue that angle. I just hope the world doesn't run out of Balsa or Birch Aircraft Ply before I get done.

My wife said to me the other day that our dining room looks like an Indiana Jones style spike pit...

But she enjoys it too.

Sounds like the other question I get asked - "how many books do you need?" I just respond with a smile.
