This gallery showcases the Estes - Bandit (K-48 or #1248) and those rockets derived from it. Particularly appropriate in this thread are the following:

as well as any upscales, downscales, clones, kitbashes or other derivative works. Even Goonies qualify!

This is my Bandit; the Semroc Retro-Repro kit. Just finished it up last weekend and ready for its maiden flight. The paint scheme differs slightly from the Semroc facecard in that the yellow fin relative to the black painted section of the BT is on the opposite side. This is one nice kit and an enjoyable build.

My Semroc Bandit on it's first (and very short) flight. I mod'ed the kit to take 24mm motors. It's first flight was on an Estes D12-5. Both ends of the motor blew out in pretty spectacular fashion, ejecting most of the burning propellant, but charring the lower body severely. I'll probably start over from scratch on a new one. A 2nd D12-5 from the same pack flew fine just before this in my Cherokee D.

Thanks to Ryan Leach for the outstanding photographs!

I built this rocket when I was 13 or 14 in the mid '70's . . . (exact date is written on its engine tube, as I did with all my rockets). Loved this one. My mother liked it because when I used a weaker engine it was visible to her throughout its flight. Here it is in a place of honor in my basement den/man cave/inner sanctum. Also in the picture is a another rocket I built in the 1970's with a plastic nose cone (USAF FC-80) but I forget its actual name. The other rocket shown I built in the early 80's out of bits and pieces I got at a garage sell. Not shown is the NASA space shuttle . . . my other favorite Estes rocket. None of them have been launched in perhaps 15 + years. Not since my sons grew up and discovered hanging around with girls and such was more fun then launching rockets and playing computer games with dad (go figure, lol).

The 'ol Bandit saw dozens of launches, and has been repainted twice and repaired three times . . . once after a particularly bad parachute failure required extensive fin work. I must say the nifty exhaust system that didn't require recovery wadding was great. Till it wasn't, anyway. Seems to have worn out or burned through after many launches. After the "Great Parachute Melt" in the summer of '78 I started using wadding.

Didn't realize how extensive the cobwebs are in the den till I took this shot. Guess I should knock them down . . . eventually ;)

Cool....

The rocket in the foreground is the Estes Interceptor.

The rocket hanging from the sealing looks like a larger Estes Scorpius to me.

Anyone know the measurements on the paint? I am building a original Estes Kit, but neither the Estes or Semroc instructions give measurements for the different colors to be laid out on the tube.

I'm also looking for a bit of guidance on the paint job. I'm wondering how much of the lower part of the body tube is black? Is it just the section between the yellow fin and the black fin to the right of it or does it go all the way around to the second black fin?

In my revised sim, the black painted section on the top of the main body tube is 4.5" long. The bottom has black paint on the last 5.5", but one section between one of the black fins and the yellow fin is left yellow.

In the instructions I used it didn't specify, so I had to use my Mk 1 eyeballs on the positioning for the paint, and I've since gathered more tools and resources.

You mean the 002060?

If it's that one and you're not going to use the decals, I'd be interested.

Would also love to get cloning info generally, such as 300 dpi or better scans of the fins, nose cone and overall length measurements, etc. I like the look of it, but prefer conventional construction.

Yes is the 2060. I could send the decals and the instructions to ya. Here is a scan of the fins I used for Open Rocket. I know the body tube is 11" and it uses the HBT-1090.
