Thank goodness. I just checked their site and I can survive another day. Not that their sale isn't good...but I can resist today at least. :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that Estes is again having a Sale on Rockets. Check back each day during the Month of February to see what's new on sale.

John Boren

So in December you experimented with shipping big boxes full of bunches of rockets. This month you're experimenting with shipping many small boxes daily with only one rocket each? Is this a stress test for your shipping system? :)

Probably more of a stress test for John.

I appreciate these great sale prices on kits but once you factor in the high shipping cost, is it still a good deal? I think the December sale was so popular because of the free shipping in addition to the sale prices.

No :D, for the many educators each year that I get in the store asking for 10+ of a simple kit for a class, then when I ask them when they need it by, they say "tomorrow".

I played around with the shopping cart and it looks like you can get free shipping if you order at least $90. I bought three Monarchs during the last sale so I will wait and see what the rest of the week brings.

Yes, I have worked it out to be $85 for free shipping. Let's hope there are enough choices one day or another to get there.

To buy one or two kits, probably not. But I ran through a sample order of three Monarchs yesterday and my out-the-door cost would have been about $22. That's not a great price, but not bad either.

It DOES look like they got rid of the "Bonus Points" though :(

I noticed that too, I looked everywhere on their site but couldn't find anything. It sucks too, I had some points to use :(

On another note, I am betting that the "December Sale" rockets are the ones featured this month. They must have a huge cache of these still?

Yes I emailed them , maybe I will get a response. Had like 500-600 points this sucks

Today's rocket of the day is Photon Probe for a little over $4.
The truth is, I'd probably buy every one of these rockets at the discount if they were offered all at the same time - or at least in large numbers. With only one available at a time (along with some launch sets), there is no way to justify the expensive shipping for the purchase. Spread out over many rockets, or free shipping when I spend $85, sure definitely worth it. But not like this. Too bad really.

I wonder how retailers and LHS feel about Estes' deep discounts on certain models and the advertisement of such. Especially in light of the MAP pricing model that was discussed in a different thread. It makes no difference to me as a consumer, but this can't sit very well with especially small hobby retailers.

Maybe they buy them and put them on their shelves at retail.

Too bad we couldn't get the logistics together to execute a "group buy". Payments and redistribution could be a nightmare though.

It's also interesting that the model of the day's price seems to go up during its 24 hour period...

The Super Neon would have been a nice score (lots of payload/booster sections), but the shipping... Oy Vey

So, I broke down, and did buy a handful of today's kit, the Phoenix Bird. It is priced at $5-something each, and is a 24" BT-55 based rocket with balsa through the wall 2 piece fins, a balsa connector, payload bay, balsa nosecone, and 18" chute. The Phoenix Bird traces its heritage back to Centuri (as a #13), and the Challenger II - Maniac - Eliminator line. This modern version, however, is scaled down slightly from BT56 to BT55. Still, it should be a good kit, and one I can hand over to my sons anew to build on Saturday mornings a few times over the next several years.

I did get to use my member "points" left over from the holiday sale, so recouped about $4 there.
I did have to pay some $10 postage, so that my 5 kits came out to more like $7 each (or $6 with my points).
Over at AC Supply at 45% off and as part of a free postage order, they would be $13 or so each - and I've had one in my "cart" there for a while now.
So maybe not a bad deal.

I picked up 2 $20 helis and 2 sets of replacement blades. Should be fun when I get the new cat.
