Today I found out there is a local 3d printing studio in my town. I was wondering if anyone has looked into printing engine mounts or nose cones with these machines? Im sure I saw someone on here that printed a rocket. I just think it would be cool to have a 3d printed engine mount or a nose cone that had a dbl ram jet and through ducting holes going down the sides of it. Might break the bank and never fly but it would sure look boss! :)

Nose cones can be done on a 3D printer, so long as they fit within the print volume. For instance, if the studio has a print volume of 8" cubed on a side, then you'll not get a 12" tall nose in a single pass.

Also, the ridges are still visible, depending upon the layer thickness. A layer thickness of 0.4mm is quite noticeable, a layer of 0.2mm is not too bad, and a layer of 0.1mm can be sanded out pretty easily.

Other parts that are non-visible can more easily be prepared, like internal engine mounts.

Also, you'll probably want to wipe down the model (if done in ABS) with acetone. That melts the outer layer a little bit, putting a fine polish on it, and more readily melting the layers together. Then rinse with water to neutralize the acetone.

Thanks for the info. I contacted the guy who runs the place and am going to try and get in there next week and have a look around. Im not sure what type of machines hes using or the sizes. All i know is im going to make something. Even if its just a new button for my launch controller! :)

I've got a number of odd parts on ShapeWays - search 'thanatos' if you want a peek
