I was fortunate enough to come into possesion of one of these (https://www.siriusrocketry.com/Deimos.htm) a few months ago through the generosity of the DARS crew and I have to say this is one outstanding kit. Every part is first rate and the balsa cones and paper nozzle assemblies give it quite the old school feel; in other words, perfection ! Jeff Taylor did the definitive build thread a few years back (https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?14227-Sirius-Rocektry-Deimos) so I'll just post a shot of the completed airframe and hope that my finishing skills come close to Jeff's on this one. You won't be disappointed if you add one of these to your build queue.

So one of my resolutions is to take/post more pictures and this is one of those efforts. The Deimos has flown twice since I started this thread.

First appearance on 11/17/2012 at the DARS club launch in Frisco TX. Estes E12 power. Pictures courtesy of Gary Briggs.

2nd time out on January 19th, same venue. Aerotech E18. Alot of chuffing and an incomplete ignition resulted in a lawn dart. I'm lucky that the ground was slightly damp. Only the top 4 inches of the airframe was damaged and the nose cone. I could probably salvage the cone but I'm going to go ahead and get a replacement along with the new tubing. She will fly again.

Oh, that's terrible - your model looked terrific. Hope the rebuild goes well.

...rocketry ain't for sissies.
That's funny!

Wow - awesome job on the Deimos, Sam! That is such a cool rocket, and Sirius did an incredible job with the kit (as always)! Bummer about the damage - hopefully you'll have it back in the air soon.

I try delivering that line with my best George C. Scott/General Patton impersonation. Can't quite pull that off but it gets a giggle. :)

The repair is proceeding well, but as sometimes happens, with starts and stops. It is a hobby after all. I have the forward airframe repaired and a new nose cone prepped and ready for prime/sand/prime/sand... I have another thread on the nose cone here: https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?49317-Balsa-nose-cone-treatment Just need a few mild days and that mythical "free time" I read about in fairy tales.

Sam, may you find that free time that I can only dream of! :)

The repair is looking good!

I remember reading a build article on this in an issue of Sport Rocketry, but not sure on the issue. I could probably look for it again, but the guy that built it did an exceptional job on it and that build article is what got me interested in this kit among other kits from Sirius Rocketry. I really like the kit and it looks well made with quality parts, which seems to be par for the course with Sirius. I think after I get some of my other projects done I'm going to buy one. The only thing I don't really like about the kit is the Mylar chute. I think for kit this size I would like the reassurance of a nylon chute. So I would probably just swap out the chute with one of my extra ones I have laying around.

You did a nice on your rocket kit and I'm sorry about the lawn dart, but your rebuild looks like it's coming along fine.

TRF's own FatBoy did the build article in Sport Rocketry, and a nice job he did too.

Although some of our kits do come with Mylar chutes, the Deimos is not one of them. The Deimos includes a thicker plastic chute.

It's an exceptional kit regardless of the chute. I like the detail of the kit and the decals. This is apparent on all your kits. They look like a lot of fun to build and offer a challenge.

I put the link to Jeff's 2010 build thread in the first post on this thread. It can also be found in the MASA club newsletter archive in that same timeframe. That certainly got me "psyched" for the project.

All you have to do to get psyched about building a Sirius kit is to build a Sirius kit. They speak for themselves!

No worries! And thanks!

I have always been a "detail kind of guy". That is often why it takes forever to get another Sirius Rocketry kit out to the public. I have about a half dozen in the works, and one ready to be released shortly...

From: https://www.siriusrocketry.com/news.htm "Manuals are done, kits are bagged, just working on all the final promotional and physical things..." :)

Well this one has been on the bench long enough. With the last of those superb Sirius waterslide decals in place, the Deimos is ready for a Saturday launch.

Now that is a "good as new" repair job. Nicely done.

Thank you Ron. Pretty straightforward but I did want as seamless a blend of the new airframe section as possible. I'm pretty happy with the results and looking forward to a less "interesting" return to flight.

I just read the term "core sample" this morning and laughed about the term, but looking at the January picture makes it not so funny! great job on the rebuild

I'm happy to provide a case study example of the concept. If you fly long enough, you too may experience that sinking feeling watching your rocket go way past apogee with no recovery system deployment. Lawn dart is another common description. :)

To date I don’t have any Sirius Rocketry kits; though there are a couple I’d really like to build and fly. Their most recent offering the “Eradicator” being the first.

Sadly, from a monetary perspective, I’m currently motoring-up* for the “Air Fest” and “High Frontiers” launches and gathering funds for my Cert 2 rocket build. Ka-Ching!!! So there isn’t a lot of extra change laying around for “Fun Rocket” purchases.

Dang shame about the lawn-dart. What exactly happened?

*”Motoring-up”; The purchasing of large amounts of mid and high-power motor reloads causing a hemorrhage of Master Card proportions.

Exactly ? Incomplete burn of the composite AP motor. Why ? Most likely a user error not getting the igniter positioned all the way to the end of the slot like you're supposed to with Aerotech motors. There were alot of large, charred pieces of propellent still in the case and the delay grain hadn't even burned all the way through. When you try to light a C slot motor in the middle bad things happen.

Very nice repair job......good as new :handshake:

That is a beautiful rocket ,as are all of Davids kits.

I`m embarassed to say I don`t have any in my fleet ,but that will change this comming Christmas !

Good luck on your next flight !!!

"When you stick your hand into the pile of goo that used to be your best rocket, you will know what to do." Repair it and you did! Nice job. Now it is time to get you ivory handled launch controller and have the blood and guts to push the button again.
