Well, it's time for the annual " bring the Aunt's car back to [snowy] Quebec"

The wife & I do this just about every year. We don't mind the drive, and look at it as 'a vacation in motion'. I/we plan to cruise thru the Smokey mountains this time, and do the "West Bluegrass Trail; rte 42"

Sarasota to Columbia to Asheville to Kingsport to Hagerstown to.. home. (that part should take us thru most of the Appelatians / Smokey mountains.. parrallelling the 81)

Any reccomedations? food? scenery? road side attractions? Stores? Malls? BBQ diners?! Blackened Catfish!! Distillery?!! :O
Anything to avoid? Towns? hotels? Construction?

It'll be a sunday to tuesday drive up..

I did that a few years back, too slow of a drive if you in no hurry. A lot of attractions are closed right now so it might be difficult to mention places to go. I'll get back to you. If you passing through Schenectady, NY and you like air and space museum's.

The Biltmore in Asheville, NC is awesome. Also, if you ever are driving between NC and SC on I-95, stopping at South of the Border is a must!

OMG!!!!! You must be kidding. South of the Border? LAWD! That is sooooo over rated. Chimney Rock & Lake Lure are realy nice areas to visit in NC. There's a ton of shops there with items that can only be bought there made by the locals. Blue Ridge Pky will have some occasional look out points worthy of your camera. Most NC mountain towns have a personality of their own. Blowing Rock & Boone are good areas of interest.

I'm not sure about Dollywood's timing but it's my understanding they had a fire there and some things got fried. Not sure if that was rebuilt or not.

Plus Dollywood is a bit west of his his intended route...One place to avoid(and I do if possible) is going in/thru or around Atlanta<shudder>..I-285 is like one messed up racetrack! It is one place where road engineers go to see how NOT to build new highways!A LOT of the interchanges on it are just plain WONKY...

I'm not going to say it's a "must" to do, but you have to do it at least ONCE to say you did. I didn't seem to see the hoopla of all the signs on the road telling you to go there. They could have filmed Napolean Dynamite 2 there, this is what "Pedro did after high school." :)

I think they are off your route but the Jack Daniels disterly is a neat free tour. No samples because it is a dry county. Further north in PA is the train stuff in Strausburg PA. Very neat even if you only like trains a little it is worth it. They run a steam train on the half hour to hour, and the PARR museume is fantastic. My dad says the aircraft museume in kalamazoo MI is very neat if you go further west. Maybe you can check these out on future trips. The nook isn't the besr to have google maps up and ref as iI type.

wait..... you were in my neighborhood and i wasnt aware ?
did you go to Wings Over Miami museum ? the Nike Missile base tour ?

Savannah. And if you have the time, take Rt 17 as far north as possible stopping at any and every barbeque stand you see.

We did the JD tour a few years ago. that was a hoot! and yes, stillhave my 'tour guide certificate" and the collector's bottle of JD.. and teh sticker that proves I bought it at the white rabbit.

this time around, we're a little pressed for time, so it's a slight detour thru te smokey mnts.

thanks all so far!
