Well today was supposed to be a great day. I had time where I was suppossed to be able to work on rocketry related items. My day didnt really work out that way. After getting called into work and dealing with the situation at hand I was walking back to my truck when i slipped on some fresh ice and the next thing i know my IPAd hits the ground. I pick it up and the glass is cracked.:jaw:

I call into the Apple store and they tell me i can bring it in but i need to set up an appointment. They give me an appointment for 5:40 this evening. I get there a bit early thinking that I may get in earlier. That didnt work out. When i finally get in they tell me that they dont replace the cracked glass, they replace the unit and charge me $249.00. Needless to say i wasnt expecting that.

Have any of you awesome TRF people had a situation where you had a cracked glass on an IPAd? I see other places will fix them but I am a bit leary sending my IPAd to someone without a good reference. FYI- it is an IPad 2 with 64 gig of memory and has cellular abilities.

Thanks to anyone who has advice.

I have an Ipod touch with cracked glass, it functions fine. Can't help you with the pad.

There are so many cracks I get little glass slivers when I slide the unlock bar or push the button on the bottom to wake up the IPAD. Laura said its payback for giving you crap yesterday.

Depending on the model, it is sometimes better to replace.

Damn, I sure wouldn't touch it then! I hope it wasn't my fault.

I can not say in your area. Look for people that do this. I did that to my iPhone 4 and had it replaced by a guy that charged me $79. Sure it was expensive, but not as expensive as a new one.

I don't know if they do that for the iPad, but look/search around. I see places in Southern CA that replace the glass/digitizer, if that is all that is broken (IOW the LCD is okay), for $129.

Indeed if you are willing to try, there are glass/digitizer replacements on eBay. I can not say how hard or easy to install, but if you can not use it now, what do you have to lose?

Unfortuntely, totally my fault for slipping and dropping it. Seeing as I use it for work all the time, maybe they might help with it, but more than likely i will see this first.:flyingpig:

I hope this doesn't keep you and Jeremy from coming to Bong Next Saturday.

A layer of packing tape on the screen -might- increase the life of the display, but will definitely help with preventing glass splinters. It really depends on how 'broken' it is though.

Whn you do get it fixed (or replaced) do yourself a huge favor and visit Zagg.com and get a set of Zagg invisibleSHIELD protectors for your iPad. We've both got them on our iPads and cell phones. They've been lifesavers, especially for my iPad. Original 1st generation and the screen is as good as the day it was made. My wife bought it from someone who'd had it for two months 4 years ago and ever since we got it there's been a set of Zagg invisibleSHIELD protectors on it. They are worth every penny of their cost.

Do they have anti-fingerprint coatings on the top like the original screens do?

While the $249 price tag is painful, you have to remember it likely also includes a new battery, as that's a full refurb unit.

You can find lots of places that do it. Reading the reviews, it can be a bit hit and miss, even with the same company.

The upside with going the route you did is that you walked out the door with a known good unit, which Apple is likely giving you a short warranty on. The downside is it wasn't cheap. Compared to the $800 price tag of an upgrade, though....

Find someone in your area to do it and who has done more than a few. I good friend of mine replaces iphone and ipad screens and he mentioned that there is a learning curve. That is to say; you have to figure out where the tape wires are so as not to cut them when removing the screen. The screens are glued down. This is not a "do-it-yourself" job.

My daughter broke her iPhone screens. E(vil)bay has them fairly cheap, so I bought the LCD and the touch screen for her. She had her brother install them, back in business for about $50. I just looked for iPad screens, and as someone else noted, it would be about $100 for both the LCD and the touch digitizer, with tools.

I agree. I purchased and installed one on my iPhone 5. They are indeed worth every penny.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I am weighing out options as I have really become accustomed to having the I-Pad at my side for work and recreation. I have calls into some local areas shops that say thet repair them. As mentioned by others, i will proceed with caution as if someone ruins it then i am really out of luck. Potentially the refurb from Apple may be the best way to go.

The Apple Store geniuses do have some flexibility for how much they can charge you. It depends on who you get so, don't be afraid to ask for a discount. Unlike an independent repair shop a refurb unit may have a warranty.

Also, your work might help with the expense because there may be some negligence on their part for ice in the parking lot.

I would recommend if the iPad is critical to your work and/or your skills are not sufficient to do it yourself to take it to the Apple store. You are getting a known quantity with a purchase from them verses a 3rd party.

I would also recommend the ZAGG shields...we have them on all our mobile devices and they are amazing. One of my boys took a ball point pen to one of our Touchpads and did several firm scratches with it, leaving some nice ink and grooves. I took a scrubby sponge and scrubbed off the pen marks, leaving a dull area on the film. 2 days later, that dull area had smoothed out, and now you can't tell where he marked on it at all.

Also, there are a billion cases for iPads...we use this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0084D6B3K/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Silicone sleeve inside a clamshell plastic case. Padded corners, includes screen protector as part of the case (yes, the iPad works with 2 screen protectors). Silicone covers for all the ports or switches. Pretty much unless you drop the thing screen first onto a metal spike or try to stand on it, it'll protect the iPad from accidents.

Depending what itouch you have you can either:

Take it to a repair shop- we have one near us called ipod body shop.- have them replace the battery also if more than 2.5 yrs old
or
look for a replacement on craigs list ipod 2 r going for $50 and ipod 3 r going for $75 -125.

Don't try replacing yourself
and do get an Otterbox case - absolutely the best case !!

goodluck
