Hi All,
I downloaded a copy of Open Rocket, and I would like to know if you can do certain things with it:
1) I already did my online build of a 2X Estes Goblin. Is it possible to just copy what I already have and scale it down to original size or up a 4X scale? I already have built both of these and it would be nice to make modifications to the 4X scale then run sims off of that. Better yet, if I could just change the motor mount size and have the rocket shrink or grow with that, that would be great! Any chance of that happening?
2) I know with RockSim you can download rocket files online somewhere. Are there .ork files I can do this with Open Rocket?
3) for one rocket I built, it tells me there's a discontinuity in my design but it doesn't tell me where. Can I get it to tell me? and
4) where in Open rocket can I set my sim for dual deployment? the sim I'm running tells me my rocket is going way too fast at drogue deployment, but the motor's plugged, so what I think the program is telling is what speed my rocket is going when the MAIN deploys.
Thanks for your help.

1) Go to "Edit", and scroll down. From there you can scale a part or a entire rocket.
2) Yep. Not as common, but there are a few. Openrocket can open Rocksim files, so it's not a problem.
3) Blow the rocket up and scan it. It won't tell you where it is, but start at the last part you touched and work from there. You'll find it!
4) For dual deployment you can have a drogue 'chute and a Main. The drogue you can select it to open at Apogee, and the main you can tell it to open at a specific altitude. It's all there.
Now, when you do a simulation, before you plot the data, it will give you a basic overview on the flight sim, and it will tell you the speed at apogee, and if that's where the drogue opens up, there you go!

When you said "blow the rocket up" I thought you had something else in mind...

Check that your OD's match up between parts; that's where discontinuities occur. I don't know whether it notices discontinuities that are smaller than the smallest displayed decimal (which I remember reading that it does store, just not display), but you can retype the displayed number in if you want.

nose cone base diameter to body tube outside diameter can be an issue, in particuler if you take measurements from the actual nose cone...nose cones are usually not a perfect match.

Speaking of doing stuff in Open Rocket, does anybody know the specs to create a Launch Rail Button vs. a Lug?

I'm just looking to see if it's possible using the (Launch Lug) option. If not, should I just create something custom using the Fin option?

Open rocket doesn't support rail buttons. You could try to model it as a fin, but I suspect it won't make any difference to the stability or altitude.

Take a launch lug, and make it approximately the size and weight of a rail button.

GDJ,
Re #4, it may be 'all there' but where is it under in the program? Do the deployment options show up when you select the motor? I.e, what's the path to get to it after you've opened a file?
And re #2- how do I find and download a rocket file I want, say for example, a Nike Smoke?
Thanks,
Gordon

Click PARACHUTE, then select EDIT, then GENERAL > (right hand column)DEPLOYS at: (then select how you want the parachute to open and when/where.

You can choose what delay on the motor, but the motor doesn't have anything to do with the parachutes with dual deploy. Only with motor ejection charge deploy (ie single parachute).

As for the rocket file, you can google it, go to rocket reviews.com, cruise the forums here and do a search. I'm pretty sure somebody has a rocsim/Openrocket file on a Nike Smoke and posted it.

rocket reviews/search type in the name of the rocket you're looking for and usually you'll get a list of possible canadates, scroll down til you find 'rocsim library'. used one of those for a base when I did the ork file for the new estes nike smoke (scaled it and had to adjust a few things...:)).

Thanks. Once I realized where the files were, opening them in Open Rocket was a snap.
