The hazard with this is seepage, since the mold line is an irregular surface. Before you shoot the contrasting color, apply another coat of the base color and that should control the seepage. Some people will say to use clear, but the clear doesn't fill the gaps that allow seepage nearly as well.

G.D.

Sweet trick! Mold line or no I've had trouble with seepage now and then (like everybody? I'm new so maybe I just suck. :eyeroll:) Sealing the tape line with a spry of the base color is ingenious.

It apears that when I received my second BD kit as a gift and thought "I could adapt this one for a 29mm motor mount" I must have been about hte millionth person to think that. I got the parts from BMS in the mail last week along with the parts for my Terrier-Orion two stage adaptation. I'll post progress and pics when I start building.

Its getting there...nose cone to paint, some touch up to do and the long wait before decals and clear coat.

Modified Peenemünde paint scheme. :D How do you tape the nose cone to get the half black/white on the long axis. I tried to several times yesterday and it was always crooked or wavy.

Oh, and paint is most definitely The Devil (to steal the phrase :D ). This rocket has a twenty foot paint job.

That looks really cool!

What is it about the Big Daddy that makes everyone flying one so crazy? Highly modified with a big VMAX/WARP 9/Some quick burn stuff I stole from the ABM program back in '69 type motors. No more 3-2-1 Launch, just say "Now you see it," press the button,"Now you don't!"

I even caught the fever after crashing my Der Grosser Vatti to a six inch hole. Cut off the fin can, slapped it beneath my overflown and once crashed original Big Daddy to make a quick and dirty home made 2 stager, simply because I had seen a scratch built one on the forum and thought it was cool. The D12-0 was a bit weak making for a less than vertical staging and a wild sustainer flight. After 2 flights it put the "Scare" in me so it became a Shelf Queen, but every so often I get asked to bring back that 2 stage Big Daddy because everyone loved it so. Yes, everyone eventually goes Big Daddy crazy.

Thanks guys!

The easiest way I've found to do it is to be a bit lazy in sanding & filling the NC mold lines. Follow the mold line with fairly thin (1/2" or so) masking tape, then layer wider pieces behind the thin stuff. The hazard with this is seepage, since the mold line is an irregular surface. Before you shoot the contrasting color, apply another coat of the base color and that should control the seepage. Some people will say to use clear, but the clear doesn't fill the gaps that allow seepage nearly as well.

Neat trick. I may try it with the nose cone.

I've had really good luck with control of seepage since I started using plain old Scotch brand adhesive tape. Not a single seep on this project. Its tenacious and also forms more readily to sharp bends and ridges as it is way more flexible than masking tape. The masking lines are also a lot less noticable because the scotch tape is a lot thinner than the blue "painters tape" and there is less chance of creating a ridge of paint against the mask line. Just make sure your base coat is good and cured so it doesn't come off with the tape.

Ha! :D

My son's BD augered in at the last launch so we just cut three inches off the BT and added some nose weight. Can't wait to fly it again. It should move on an F32. :D

I didn't think I would like stubby rockets, but this one is just some much dang fun it may turn me into a convert. This rocket is tough, easy to assemble, can be built like a tank or modified and it doesn't take itself very seriously. Also I think its a great kit cuz' its cheap! :D

A two stager...hmmm...I like it!!!

That looks really cool!

My son was looking at it yesterday and asked me what a 20' paint job was. I explained and he said, "Dad, I'm only about six feet away and it looks awesome".

:D

Started the decals tonight. But I'm too tired and don't want to screw them up. Maybe finish them tomorrow.

A preview...

+1 on using Scotch Tape to make seepage free lines. Chris Michielssen (hcmbanjo) taught me that from his blog. Just try and leave yourself a 'pull tab' someplace.

Sealing the tape with a base coat is also a good idea. But go LIGHT or you'll create a ridge.

Super looking project.

Got the decals on. This was my first attempt at creating my own.

I'm undecided on painting the nose cone 1/2 black and 1/2 white for right now. I'll let the decals set up for a week and then clear coat.

And some "nose art"...yeah, yeah, its on the tail. :D

Oh, yeah I forgot...If paint is the Devil, decals are his Bastard child.

Haha, I know exactly what your saying.

Nice work BTW.

Thanks guys! This site is great for learning new skills and I used a lot of them for this project. Once Der Max Daddy is clear coated I'll post some Glamour Shots in the BD gallery.

I probably have more time into the decals than any other portion of this project. The learning curve was steep, but I'm printing some decals for my camo Red Max tonight with no problems.

Where did you get the decals?
If you don't mind my asking.

My own designs (using Red Max as a base) and others off The Internets that were modified. Printed at home on an ink jet printer.
