Also, if you go out take some TP with you as people are stealing the rolls from the public toilets.

Yup, it's happening.

At the previous store where I worked 'customers' are stealing the toilet paper out of the restrooms.

At my current store we would leave out an extra roll or two in case the dispensers ran out before we could refill it.
Not anymore.
I told the staff to only load the dispensers and not leave any extra toilet paper rolls out.
Also, I had the presence of mind to order an additional case of toilet paper for the store bathrooms before all this 'panic' set in.

As far as TP supplies for general sale at my store...
We received TWO nine-roll packages of the stuff on our last warehouse delivery.
It didn't even last five minutes.

While we are currently dealing with the (real or imaginary) toilet paper shortage, all this hoarding could have a detrimental effect on our hobby in the future.
I am talking about:

"The great Estes Recovery Wadding shortage of 2021!"

When I toured the Estes plant during NARAM-60 the tour group saw many of the pieces of equipment Estes uses to make products.
One was the recovery wadding machine.
Stacked around it were cases of Scott bathroom tissue.

If there ever is a toilet paper apocalypse, I will be making a 'raid' in Penrose, Colorado. :D

It is not surprising. I did nto understand it at first. I do now. When I deployed to Iraq, every soldier carried a tampon in their medical bag to plug a wound. Although there was less panic and this is much more rash, it is similar. Toilet paper is so short my apartment complex has put out a warning not to flush baby wipes because of the shift to baby wipes.

I was reading an article about HEB (large texas grocery chain) and their emergency preparedness plan. They started drawing up emergency logistics plans back with H5N1, and were prepared to apply them with swine flu and H1N1, as well as leveraging plans to relieve the gulf coast when hurricanes would hit.

In January they started talking with chinese stores and suppliers to get an idea of what impacts the US could face, as well as lessons learned too late for Chinese stores. They implemented rationing and measures to ensure availability earlier than their competitors too.

The one thing they couldn't account for in their plan was the mass-heard buy up of toilet paper for no discernable reason

Edit: found the article again

What was the hobby lobby debacle?

Aw cmon! Red potatoes are good!

Hobby Lobby discounted and discontinued most of the large motors. Now they only sell smaller motors at a discount, but not the old 40-perrcent off coupon deal.

I'm not much of a cook even a savvy eater, but I think regular or Russet potatoes are better for baking, while red potatoes are better for potato salad.

I just watched a documentary on ZZ Top, then went to Wikipedia to read up on Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Turns out Billy Gibbons had a company called "BFG Brand Sauces" selling hot sauce. Can't find any online. Gonna have to dig hard to find some!
Where did you see this documentary? Been a ZZ Top fan for almost 50 years.

Lived in Texas in the late 60’s and early 70’s. An ancestor died defending the Alamo and is listed on the memorial...even though he was born in New York City(!).

Listened to a lot of country and blues music and Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet and others) who later moved to San Francisco about the time I did, too.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan remarked recently that the doomsday movies all got it wrong. Not one predicted that folks would be fighting over TP.

Bought and stashed a large amount of crepe paper to use as wadding and recovery streamers over the years, but it could have other uses.

Here's a current update on what people are buying way more of than last year. https://www.npr.org/2020/03/27/822650816/guess-whats-flying-off-shelves-now-hair-dye

Amusingly, now chicken and frozen foods isles were completely empty yesterday in Costco and two other grocery store I visited.
Fish, beef, and other meats were plentiful.
Eggs had doubled in price.
I'm suspecting farm-to-store supply chain disruptions more than demand spikes.

Not one predicted that folks would be fighting over TP.

I blame these guys:

My wife is a little obsessed with stock pilling toilet paper. We will eventually use it.
I however, am waiting until I start my model railroad layout to stock pile TP.
It's used in a variety of ways for scenic in layouts. Water features and cover over window screen for land formations for a couple.
But until then, I keep laughing at the video I seen of a guy going through the drive up at McD's and pays with 1 square of TP.
The lady looks at him like that isn't going to do it, and he tears off 1 more square and hands it to her and throws the roll in the back of his car/truck.
Obsession...You either have it, or you don't. There is no middle ground.

I should have mentioned that I'm too poor to ever build even a small oval model railroad layout.
Just another dream I have...will never happen.
I did have one though in my early teens, but never finished it. Cars, women and booze started taking over my interest.
So I'll be never stock piling TP.

Here's a current update on what people are buying way more of than last year.

Yeast is not really a surprise, as it is not only used for baking but, also, for alcohol fermentation / distillation.

The real increase to watch, not included in that link, is the sale of guns and ammo.
These people have not suddenly taken up target-shooting or become avid hunters. They are preparing for "conflict".

1st Panic - Toilet Paper
2nd Panic - Food
3rd Panic - Gasoline
4th Panic - Lock & Load

I would be interested to see stats if they are available, but I would guess that most of the gun purchases are not first time gun owners. I would guess that it’s people who already had one or more adding to their collection.

Then there are those who have been buying a box of ammo a week for years now.

Bought against the day when it becomes illegal to do so.

People adding to their collection...

Would not stand in the lines...

That I witnessed...

I'm not a first time gun purchaser by any stretch of the imagination. I had planned on buying a new Kimber 1911 and when I went into my normal gunstore, it was packed with people and hardly anything was available. After my 2 hour wait, they called my number and I asked about the Kimber...which they didn't have but had 3 just a week earlier. I asked about all the people and nearly all of them were first timers. The store was also limiting ammo purchases to those buying a gun and only up to 250 rounds in the same caliber as the gun. That was 2 weeks ago before any local stay at home orders

Cali and LA have reopened the gun stores after being threatened with legal action.

Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti threw Sheriff Villanueva under the bus (“It wasn’t me! I don’t know what the Sheriff was thinking.”)

Wonder what the long term effects of so many previously ambivalent or anti gun folks trying to arm up will be politically. They’ve discovered the government really WILL try to limit arms purchases and that the process of buying firearms is not nearly as painless or easily accomplished as they have been told. Many stories of people trying to buy firearms by mail have been making the rounds.

There were several stories about this...

First-timers who thought it was time...

Kinda comical if you ask me...

Those are fresh .308 from our press in my avatar...

Well, they were fresh when the picture was taken...

Thanks for the report on the ground. This is what I get for ASSuming. :)

At Bass Pro Shops by me, people have been buying ammo by the case ( most are using CASH, no "paper trail" ) . . . Needless to say, the store is out of stock very rapidly.
