This lost of the sense of smell and taste was discussed at some length on yesterday's BBC News Hour (which runs at 2 PM on Seattle's main NPR station). It sounded like there is something to it as an indicator.

Chuck and others on the front line, you are in our prayers.

Our younger son's girlfriend is a nurse in Pasadena, California and our son told us last night that she is under the most stress she's ever had in her life and that there are active cases in the hospital where she is working.

As of last night night Washington state is under an "at least two weeks" just stay home order.

And I have just deleted a couple of goofing off posts. Do we realize that we are one of the few places we can ask an actual doctor treating this to get some real, not second hand, news of what is good to do to stay safe and not panicking.
If you get the idea we are protecting this thread from going way off, you are right, we are.

Since the other coronavirus thread is no longer allowing new posts I am doing it here. This is a very good article on COVID-19 and Food Safety. Lots of good information that I haven't seen before.

Since the other thread is closed for this type of post, why would you put it here? This is a thread for asking questions about the virus that our doctor friend can hopefully answer.

This is an off topic post that doesn't belong here. If you want to risk opening a new thread to post "news" about the virus that's where it should go.

Anyone have questions or ones front he past I have no answered? Respond to this post.

Chuck, here is one from the other day don't think you answered. Was posted in TRA thhread for some reason.
Question: Is anemia, specifically low WBC an increase risk of severity if contracted due to reduced ability of the cells to combat illness? How about low RBC and other factors of anemia? Thanks in advance cwbullet and others who may have relevant and useful information.

Oh gads, I hadn't even noticed that one get locked.

Mods, thank you for putting up with this mess

Then you have my prayers. One thing I haven't heard much is a national call to prayer, either I missed it or...? Where are our church leaders?

Yes, there is. Our church (United Methodist) has a call to prayer and it coincides with a similar one by the Pope for the Catholic Church as well as others (I think).

UMC Council of Bishops Call to Prayer

I am still at work. I will research the request when I get home. Rough day today. I have worked 14 days straight now.

Can you get a bit of downtime? So you don't run down and be more susceptible to the virus?

Sorry that I missed your question.
  1. RBC and anemia: It depends on the reason. Anemia is not a risk, but the cause might be. A low RBC and anemia due to cancer is likely a risk to catch COVID and have a worse effects. I have seen a couple with cirrhosis and anemia and they are definitely at risk. If you are low in RBCs and Iron due to heavy menstrual cycles, you might not be at a higher risk.
  2. WBCs: A low WBC might and probably would be but it depends on the type of WBC they down. Not all WBCs are the same. For example, HIV has a low white count and is definitely at a higher risk for all infections.

Yo Chuck. So, the Center for Allergies, and Infectious Diseases. How (or why) are these two related. I have allergies. Am I in a high risk group for Covid-19?

Great question. Allergies without asthma or bronchitis is probably not a risk. If you require oral steroids, you are probably a higher risk. I suspect that you are not “high risk”.

Ive only ever heard Voluntold since the recipient usually only finds out after the fact

Voluntold is a terrible experience. I have been voluntold bunch in my life.

Our positive rate for testing is less than 1%. Our death rate is currently 0%. 56% of our population is high risk. I suspect 0% will not last long.

Thank you for everything you are doing and best wishes for your community.

Question: are half-mask respirators useful in any medical contexts? They wouldn’t protect other people from the wearer but they do have N95 particulate filters that would protect the wearer. I bought a couple when we were planning to clean out a relative’s basement and I didn’t want to get anything from the mouse droppings. If they might be helpful to a hospital I could donate the sealed one.

Can you send me a photo of one?

Most of you may know that I am taking a class to help with disaster prep. My expertise is family medicine but I have extensive experience with making plans to isolate pandemics to reduce infections. I am preparing a plan for work based on what I have learned.

I am offering to provide no nonsense answers to any questions you might have. You question will help me answer questions at work so thank you. What questions do you have?

Chuck, Have you seen this?

Example is the 3M 7501

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company...Small-10-EA-Case/?N=5002385+3294780214&rt=rud

They have interchangeable filters including N95, P100 (I have these) and others.

Thanks - see below.

This should provide some protection. I could not find the micron size filtered. I will tell you that some protection is better than none. If ti filters 0.3 microns, it will filter out the virus.
