I have a friend across the country offering to give my a J motor, which normally would require hazmat shipping. Is is possible for "private" individuals to do hazmat shipping fees, or is that a "big business" only type thing?

If so, is there a recommend shipping company (Fedex, etc) you prefer?

I apologize if this is a newbie question, normally I just have bought from the OEM or field vendor.

Check with USPS for HazMat shipping requirements.
It's not as black'n'white as go/no-go, but rules apply to any shipment, regardless of the legal status of the shipper (individual, non-profit, smill/mid/large-bus, etc).

There are limits on individual grain sizes that would tip a shipment from benevolent into HazMat category. I don't remember what those are exactly.
But there are some H, I, and J motors that comply, and can be shipped without HazMat. And there are some F-motors that require HazMat shipping.

As usual, the devil is in the details.

All motors require hazardous materials paperwork, and regardless of who you are shipping with, you just be preapproved to ship. It’s possible for an individual to ship once via USPS within their limitations but it’s not an easy approval to get. Any J motor is over their limits anyway.
