Short answer... yes, people are buying it up like crazy. I decided I wanted to watch a train wreck this morning to I went to my local Sam's Club 5 minutes before it opened (simply for the entertainment value, I bought nothing). There were at least 500 people lined up outside. The checkout lines also spanned the depth of the store and then some. Sheep are fun to watch.

We went to our local Target on Friday night and the checker there said they are not expecting another TP shipment until mid April.

The irony is that people that are afraid of running out of TP while possibly being quarantined for being exposed to the virus are increasing their risk of being exposed to the virus by waiting in crowds to get TP

It was said elsewhere. Individuals are pretty smart but groups of individuals . . . not so much.

I wonder if a certain Doomsday Prepper episode was re-run. Dude turned a former telephone company relay station into his doomsday hideaway. A very large supply of TP on hand was noted. Why? "It's the one thing that everyone needs." Now I've heard of using currency for TP but...

There’s freaking out, which isn’t helpful. And there’s taking prudent steps, which makes sense. I guess different people draw the line at different places.

I did stock up on certain things, including TP, because I think it makes sense to do so. Maybe some might think that’s a sign of panic, but here are my reasons. I don’t intend to go to the store for a couple of weeks to avoid contact with others. If I personally got sick, or my wife got sick, I’d self-quarantine for at least 2 weeks. And from watching the news, other countries have ordered certain regions to lock down, stores and restaurants are ordered shut, and you aren’t supposed to be on the streets — it makes sense to me that could happen here. For those reasons, I have several weeks of food, TP, and panic-soothing booze (which maybe I didn’t get enough of, and I’m kind of starting to panic over).
Does that make sense, or have I given in to media-induced mass hysteria

It makes sense, certainly not dumb, but with a bit of hysteria and also a bit selfish. One of my sons went shopping yesterday had no problems with getting what he wanted except for TP. He is 43 has 4 children, why should he have to go looking all over or have to go back to the store again to get TP? I'm 65 and if I go shopping and get everything I want except for TP, why should I have to go back to the store again just for TP? This article sums it up pretty good: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/03...ilet-paper-so-why-are-people-trying-hoard-it/

I posted this yesterday because my son went shopping and could not get any TP. Why people need even a 2 month supply of TP much less a 6 month supply is beyond me. Unless you are planning on staying home that long without trips to get groceries leave some TP for the rest of us. There is no shortage other than from the people that feel that huge amounts of TP will keep them secure/safe.

We went to Kroger's and Walmart yesterday and both were out of toilet paper and potatoes. Lots of fruit and veggies (other than potatoes) still available!

This happens everytime there is a "'crisis", whether it be massive snowstorm (the sheeple hoard bread, milk, toilet paper), or the latest illness going around, and the sheeple stampede.

I figure if things get bad, then you are more likely to die from running out of food, drinking bad water, or your starving neighbor kills you for your supplies, than to suffer all that much from a itch butt because you ran out of TP. ;)

One wonders how many people are buying it just to resell it. This country has so many inspiring "entrepreneurs," doesn't it?

Yep and Ebay and Amazon have been shutting down the price gougers, not sure what Ebay and Amazons criteria are for that though.

I'd guess it's whatever offends their feels, since there is no objective criteria.

I always found it amazing that this book is over 100 pages long... I guess if you don’t like the book it can serve another purpose. But unfortunately I got the copy I read from the library.

This is a real world example of the classic “Prisoner’s Dilemma”.

“I’m not gonna rat my homey out but what if he rat’s me out?”

Vs

“I don’t need to hoard TP but what if everyone else buys it all?”

Yup, it's real.

I work for a national retail chain which has a section of cleaning supplies in each store.
Normally these items sell in low volume but are high profit.

The last two weeks have been crazy.
First the hand sanitizer sold out.
Then the various disinfectant 'wipes'.
Toilet paper gone.
Paper towels.
Kleenex.
Today the last of our bottled water.

Good news is we sold out of stuff I had been trying to get rid of for years and people were so desperate they'd buy anything.
My shelves are bare.
Hopefully, more stock will arrive Monday.

I was surprised also that TP was the item that sold out first. When Mt. St. Helens blew in 1980, the news was reporting here in Spokane that milk and beer were the first things to go . Reminds me of the great TP shortage caused by a statement Johnny Carson made during his monologue years ago that caused a run on TP. He had to apologize a few days later about not getting the story correct.

This is actually starting to make me nervous, once people realize recovery wadding can be used as TP, the rocket community may have a shortage issue too.
I use dog barf (for rockets, not TP) so I have TONS of Estes wadding from bulk packs. We should be good for a few weeks.
