What is the issue with freakin toilet paper? Publix has been out for 8 days. What are people hoarding it?
This might be a great time for everyone to wise up and install a sprayer.
Having travelled all over the world, I can say this is another one of those things that the rest of the world does better.
I put them in all my toilets years ago.
TP.. bah!
Try it, you'll never go back.

Still in Spain, coming back Monday. I finally found one paragraph of useful information:
>>
Travelers returning from impacted countries after the new restrictions are implemented on Friday must arrive through 13 US airports set up for enhanced screening. Returning travelers will need to self-quarantine for 14 days.
<<
So it looks like my screening will happen in Seattle, and they're just going to tell me to go home and stay there for 2 weeks.
Feels kind of lame compared to all the hype.

It has its purpose. If people follow the instructions, they will protect others. If they do not, then their callousness and self-centeredness might kill others.

My wife insisted on getting a bidet in December. Super simple installation, runs only on the water pressure, so no wiring to worry about.

If only all the politics and posturing had been reduced to this, there wouldn't be such a panic. Not to mention.. everybody would be able to get their TP

Thursday early morning, I did a heavier version of my usual shopping, adding some additional staples and baking supplies, plus the ability to make a batch of spaghetti sauce (5 nights' meals) just in case. Nothing like a hoarder run. Friday early afternoon I went back for a few items I had forgotten plus snacks for the kids based on recent "school is elearning for a month" that happened the night before. The store was pretty much stripped clean of baking supplies, meats, breads, butter etc.. Fortunately I had gotten those the day before.

But, the factories are still producing, and the trucks are still delivering, so in a few more days the store will be back to regular stock. However, in about two weeks the trash toters will be overflowing with perishables that are spoiling.

one of my friends was selling really hard on the phone all day yesterday, as he said that the recent run on all of the food in the grocery stores caused him to be able to sell $4,000,000 of food in his warehouses in one single day, compared to last March, where it took him 30 days to sell 3.2 million

Many residents here are old enough to remember the dock strike of 1971 by the stevedores union. 90% of goods are shipped here so it in essence stopped resupply of essential goods. Stores ran bare of spam, rice, TP, etc.
My sense is that the current stockpiling nationwide is due to people planning to hunker down for however long it takes for the threat to pass. Could be months.

Perhaps my most important Coronavirus stock-up purchase: not TP, animal-grade antibiotics, or MREs.

I slipped yesterday while putting away dishes and broke a glass. It cut my hand. Fortunately not deep, no stiches needed, will be fine in a few days and gone in a week. But a regular bandaid wouldn't protect well and certainly would inhibit frequent handwashing efficiency.

At the store I want past the fracas in the meat department, past the empty TP aisle, and over to first aid. Bought a big box of 48 hour hold waterproof Band-Aids. I've washed my hands thoroughly 20 times since applying it yesterday afternoon and still holding well.IMG_20200314_123816.jpg

The politics are coming from both sides. I think it is important to understand that. We need to stop the blaming and get some compassion and empathy.

Agree. If there is blame it goes to Mother Nature for the virus and to natural human tendencies for what are seen in hindsight as overreactions or under reactions to an unexpected and rapidly changing situation.

EXACTLY! I don't get the run on veggies. Its really ridiculous. This is clearly a case of mass panic induced by the media. Freaking stupid.

Main stream media just reports what's happening. Then human nature takes over.
False rumor started yesterday that all shipping here would be shut down.
Went viral, runs on items began again at Costco and other stores.
Local paper reported the truth on front page headlines this morning.
Personally I'm grateful for the MSM for reporting the FACTS and squelching the RUMORS.

There’s no expiration date therefore it can’t go bad. I think it gives some a sense of security.
Not that it’s expected to happen but how you gonna flush the TP down the toilet when the water is shut off in the hi rise apartments some live in?
If you can anticipate the water being shut off, fill your bathtub all the way to the top
That is about 50gal. Use a gallon bucket and flush just by pouring the water directly into the bowl. It will flush like normal. Use less water as long as it flushes.

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

Really a shame that some or should I say lots of people are dumber than a brainless virus. What's going on with the stores is totally ridiculous. What does TP have to do with preventing Covid-19? I hope stores start limiting all things that are being hoarded so us persons that are not totally freaked out over this can get what we need. Just got to be smarter than the virus, follow the guidelines and we will survive!!

There’s freaking out, which isn’t helpful. And there’s taking prudent steps, which makes sense. I guess different people draw the line at different places.

I did stock up on certain things, including TP, because I think it makes sense to do so. Maybe some might think that’s a sign of panic, but here are my reasons. I don’t intend to go to the store for a couple of weeks to avoid contact with others. If I personally got sick, or my wife got sick, I’d self-quarantine for at least 2 weeks. And from watching the news, other countries have ordered certain regions to lock down, stores and restaurants are ordered shut, and you aren’t supposed to be on the streets — it makes sense to me that could happen here. For those reasons, I have several weeks of food, TP, and panic-soothing booze (which maybe I didn’t get enough of, and I’m kind of starting to panic over).

Does that make sense, or have I given in to media-induced mass hysteria?

Do you think the ordeal you’ve gone through has been due to politics and posturing? Or is it more due to bad communication?

My main gripe has been about bungled communications that cause confusion and uncertainty, which leads to panic and irrational behavior. We’ve been getting mixed messages from different sources. When that happens, it’s hard to know who to trust, what the truth is, and what you should be doing. We need consistent, accurate, and transparent info.

Went to the supermarket today to do my regular shopping. I expected a mob scene and rows of empty shelves. All appeared normal. Plenty of everything to go around, except toilet paper and hand sanitizer. One of the butchers did comment that the health department had instructed them to close up the full service meat counter and put all the meat in packages. Seafood counter was operating as usual, however (??).
Kind of a let-down. I was looking forward to a good old fashioned knife fight over a couple of cans of cream style corn.:D

Maybe a rung below the TP hoarders:

Makes perfect sense to me.
And yes, the supply chain will catch up and the shelves will be restocked, but what if you run out of something before then?
I prefer not to "rough it" if I can avoid it.

I basically received an isolation order from my doctor yesterday. Due to degraded lung capacity from a past PE blood clot and being on immunosuppressants for sarcoidosis, I am high risk. He said to stay home. No travel, no restaurants, no meetings/events more than 15 people. If I do need groceries or supplies I am supposed to go at night when the stores have few people. I asked about duration and didn't get a straight answer--I'm guessing weeks, but who knows, maybe months?

Hang in there buddy! Ask about home delivery of groceries, a lot of chain grocers have that.
Isolation duration I'm guessing would depend on how long the threat remains high in your particular area.

Yeah, I'm in Indiana. Talking to my brother in rural Virginia, seems even more strict there. But he lives in what is fundamentally a retirement area with decent weather year round.

At least I have a few rockets to build :D.
