Sorry about the thievery on your doorstep. I live in Chicago where such things are a daily occurrence. Personally, I've even had USPS state they have delivered a package without ever coming near my residence. It has gotten so bad that I no longer have items shipped to my house. Now I either have packages delivered to my GF place, her building have doormen to check in packages or I request "Hold for pickup" from the merchant. Note that with FedEx, you can use their website to have a package redirected to one of their local customer service centers.

I know it's a PITA, but I strongly suggest you too begin requesting "hold for pickup" service. In the long run it's a lot less stressful.

A lot of the companies I've worked for allow personal deliveries such as this..

As long as you don't abuse it, a personal or work oriented package is jsut that, a package with your name on it, and either delivered to your desk, or a "I have a package for you" e-mail..

(I remember one place I worked at in the 90's, the mail contained about 20 Victoria Secrets catalogs each month..)

@watheyak Really sorry to hear of your loss.

Just as a general point - I've never heard the phrase 'porch pirate' before. Are deliveries generally just left on the doorstep/porch in the US..? Here (UK) if you're not home companies tend to either drop a card and leave the item with a neighbour or leave a a card with contact for a reschedule. IMHO it seems to me the delivery company was being unduly negligent by simply leaving the item where they did.

Unless it’s something that must be signed for at delivery the delivery companies leave it at your front door (or wherever you stipulated if you have one of their apps).
Last week, UPS left a 50” Sharp TV at my front door. Because I have their app I knew it was on the way. I received a notification when it was delivered (before the guy drove away) and went out and brought it in. I also use their app to have some packages delivered to the nearby UPS Store while we’re out of town. That costs little or nothing. I also have the USPS and FedEx apps. They have made it very easy to keep my packages safe.

sure but that is really, really, really common here. unless you live somewhere super nice and have a doorman, or somewhere super crummy where the delivery drivers trust no one without ID and no location. most of us are "in-between" the extremes

Scott,
I'm so sorry this happened..
I really feel for you man..
These motors are expensive enough without having to buy 2 of them..
I totally agree with Mike Pit,
Get someone to take that vid and get some stills off of it to blow up..
A giant pic of the guys face, the truck, and the trucks plate posted all over the neighborhood will do an enormous amount..
If that doesn't get him caught it will most certainly deter him from doing this again..

Man,
I'm really sorry Scott..

I ordered a Loki 54/2800 motor case from Ted at OneBadHawk. Unfortunately it was my first instance of having a package stolen off my doorstep. All caught on my Ring doorbell...

It was posted in the Ring Neighborhood group. Other neighbors have seen the truck, it's pretty distinctive.

I wanted to lose that case in the middle of the desert, not off my porch!

There wasn't any insurance on the package and I didn't expect there to be. Any advice on what I can do at this at this point would be appreciated. I've already reached out to Ted to order another.
Prick probably didn't even know what he stole. Guys like that need to have their birthdays taken away.

He is probably think how to turn it into a bong.

On another note, this has to be one of the weirdest threads in a long time.

Thanks Teddy.

The good news is another case is on the way. I bit the bullet and ordered another one last night.

Because Teddy is awesome, I woke up to an email this morning saying that he'd given me a huge discount on the second case.

This time I'll be home. And Teddy made sure I had to sign for it, lol.

Thanks!

It's a newer term, coined as more and more shopping moves online, leading to more and more home deliveries. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/11/stealing-amazon-packages-age-nextdoor/598156/

I have never had an issue but am considering the ring camera and disguising a trail camera at the mail box on the street. I think you would definitely get the plate number that way.

That's awesome Teddy gave you a discount and you have a replacement on the way.

At least it was only a motor case. You probably have more expensive (and pawnable) items delivered.

Years ago I picked out an engagement ring for my girlfriend. The shop was out of state. They fit it with the somewhat rare vintage rock I had picked out, and FedEx'd it to me with insurance and "Signature Required." Needless to say, I tracked the thing every 30 minutes after the shop called me to notify me that the ring was sent. I made plans to take a few hours off the next day to pick up the ring when I received notification that my package was at the FedEx office after an unsuccessful delivery (I wasn't home).

Imagine my shock and frustration when, after working late (to take time off the next day), I see a FedEx box sitting beside my front door - in plain view of the road. I was a good thing for me and the FedEx delivery man that he was not around when I got home.

Just wanted to say I sympathize with your situation having been there myself. My solution was to accept "sign for" only deliveries.
My neighborhood has seen the theft of porch deliveries skyrocket in the last year. I live in a downtown city scenario.
I lost a 1000.00 laptop. the idiots for FedX just threw it on my porch, big box clearly labeled DELL. Just asking for someone to take it...lol and they did. I even put a "please knock" sign on my door, I was home and they did not. Just tossed it on stoop.

Hope you have a happy resolution.

Scott,,
I sure am happy there's a great resolution to this..
Let me know when you have the case safe and sound..
It shouldn't be more the 2 days or so..

Ring doorbells have their own issues, but more importantly, they can't prevent theft, and in the vast majority of cases, they don't help to catch the perp. Even if the UPS driver tries to hide the package, thieves now follow the trucks about a block behind, and literally watch them drop off the packages. Security cameras like Ring are great if you are home and want to see who's at your door, but that's about it. This very thread proves they don't stop theft, they just allow you to relive the insult over and over.

I'm not saying they aren't useful, but they clearly don't stop the bad guys.

This exact thing has become painfully evident. About the only thing it did was tell me it got stolen, right when it happened. I really didn't need the gory details.

It has been useful, but I've come to realize the theft prevention aspect is mainly marketing hype.

Had a pistol get mailed to me after some repair work via usps once. Mailman didn’t want to go up to the door at all so kept saying I wasn’t home for delivery. I watched him drive away day two and called the postal center. They made him stop his route and drive it back to me. Guy was floored saying he’s never been pulled off route before. Asked what was in the package that was so important. I’ve never been a fan of delivery personnel as most I encounter are incredibly lazy to the point of lying to get out of having to walk 50 feet.

That's the coolest vid ever..
Without a doubt this guy should try manufacturing those packages to se;;..
Though I'm sure they'd be quite expensive..

Last week my wife and I arrived home at midnight to find that our mailman had placed two packages on the front step AND moved our garbage and recycle bins so they would block visibility of the boxes. He takes good care of us.

Unless it was a 'curio or relic' handgun, it is against USPS regulations to mail a handgun (unless you meet a listed exemption, like being a member of the armed forces). If he asked and you told him it was a handgun, you got lucky he didn't turn you or the shipper in.

One nice thing is, if they're stupid enough to steal from you again when they DO get caught you can nail them to a wall with separate counts.

I was a dealer getting my gun mailed back directly from original manufacturer. I fell under multiple exemptions at the same time. Most of my adult jobs have centered around firearms. First rule is never talk about something you did firearm related you aren’t 100% certain was, and is easy to prove, done legally.
