+1 to all of this. The search function in this forum is much less useful than it could be.

As I was reading your comment and other similar comments I thought of one of my threads. It started out discussing a new rocket I built, it now has comments on Swahili and Klingon. Threads on here tend to wander quite a bit so the search function is kind of like Ray Charles playing darts.

If we used the 'Tags' as we created threads, things "could" be easier to search..

but, by the definition of "forum", this is a place to have conversations, not to gather, collect, and sort data.

If we could add some headers to the posts, like we have in the 3D printer & yard sale forums, that would also help with the search function, as well as help filter the specific forums. We could add to the MMX, LPR, MPR and HPR teh topic headers of "build thread", "Modified", "Scratch Built", "Kit review", "Performance question" . I'm sure a few more could be thought of, and used, but you get the idea..

With regards to newcomers asking the same old questions, that's a big part of a hobby forum.

That said, not everyone may want to answer these questions and that's fine.
Some folks are good at mentoring, it takes the heart of a teacher.

Whether one wants to answer questions or not, IMHO it's best to welcome new folks to the hobby :)

I agree that we always should try to answer sincerely given rookie questions, first and foremost because it's much more welcoming to our newcomers. Other details don't really matter, because if a newcomer gets a snarky "you should have searched first", I can pretty much guarantee you they won't return.

For a structured data reference it would be much better to have a wiki.

There is an existing thread titled beginners and educational programs. This is the site for new ones to get starter information from. Why not refer new ones to this existing thread? Perhaps members could add more and more information to this thread to help the newcomers. I for one always check this thread along with the others on a daily basis to see what I could learn and I've been into rockets on and off for 47 years. I find useful information every day on this forum and I love this place.

Hey the way I look at it we were all rookies at one time. When I joined this forum I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge and how willing everyone was able and willing to help it did make me feel welcomed and I was a part of something bigger. Like a large family of friends who enjoy the same thing.

I'll agree with Afterburners..

Has the forum changed. No. The people have. I feel there is more arrogance & self-righteous in recent years (and it seems to be increasing). Courtesy & respect seems to be eroding away, be it because of a younger generation, influenced by today’s political leanings, the weather, lack of a girlfriend, fear of coming out, whatever.. The few vociferous ones who want to ‘correct’ the general populace or push their personal beliefs are getting louder..

There were always one or two, but there seems to be more these days..

I see more swearing too..

Yea man. Totally agree. I for one am in a different place in life where I can see it more than before when I might have been a factor. The more I see it, the less I want to so I end up taking weeks at a time without stopping by.

Today or kids have dramatically changed I'd be out walking my dog a my neighborhood and I would just see people will not see them it's either trash that they leave behind from eating at a fast food place they simply eat their food and then throw the trash in the street in the gutter another thing that bothers me in my neighborhood it's when people set out televisions couches Furniture this junk and it sits there for two or three weeks in front of their house I don't know if they realize that they can call the city and they will come out and pick that up for them but instead they think that maybe one of their neighbors or somebody driving by might want to have their junk I really don't understand people today they have no respect for the community they live in it's becoming a toilet bowl and it's sad. This is all back the way people are thinking today everybody owes you something but it's mostly the way this generation is raised the way their parents raised them to be if you want to know about someone in a younger generation just look at their parents

I remember when forum members used punctuation.

See typical smart ass remarks. I was speaking into my phone hence it doesn't punctuate. Do you have any other remarks to make??

Your phone must be busted because it managed to add a period between sad and this and randomly capitalized furniture.

You should get that fixed because it makes it look like you're posting on meth.

Not sure if you are serious or not, but you can speak punctuation as well. For example, I spoke this entire thing into my phone. I can even add “quotes around a sentence“, by speaking it out as I go along. It may sound weird to someone standing next to me, but it sure looks a lot better on the forum.

Tony

ps (added via my keyboard) You literally say 'period', 'comma', 'quote', or even 'new line' to add a blank line.

I did not know that
