Hi Folks,
I'm trying to plan a 54mm minimum diameter altitude/speed rocket for after my hopefully successful L2 flight this spring....I'm looking at building the GLR Mariah 54 (or possibly the Mariah 38)...
I've gotten .ork files for each model, and is it possible that the 38mm version of the Mariah will have a higher predicted altitude with the largest CTI motor that will fit in it than the Mariah 54 with the largest CTI motor that will fit?
I sim both models, and the 38mm version will theoretically reach double the altitude than the 54mm version... Am I missing something?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

For best possible answers, I highly recommend that you post the .ork file(s) of the rocket so we can check it out. One thing I can think of is... What kind of burn times does each motor have? That said... I'm not an expert on motors (nor do I pretend to be).

Thanks for the suggestion!
They are Rocksim files...
For the 38mm on a CTI J530-IM-12, OR sims 13,979 ft. at 1865mph...
For the 54mm on a CTI L935-IM-0, OR sims 5,955 ft. at 1898mph...
Am I missing something on these rocksim files?
Is there a way to save/convert these rocksim files to ork. files?
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Your parachute is set to deploy at ejection. For L935-IM-0, that is immediately at burnout.

Set parachute to deploy at apogee and apogee goes to almost 25K feet (in OR at least).

Thank you for figuring it out for me, I knew I must have been missing something.... Makes sense, the Mariah 54 would be my first electronic dual deployment rocket....

Thanks again for helping me!

To answer your other question... OpenRocket can open RockSim files (.rkt), but RockSim can't open OR files (.ork). After opening .rkt files in OR you can choose Save As, then select OpenRocket Design under the Type of file dropdown menu.

The graphics in .rkt files can't be used by OR. So, if you spent time creating graphics for it, you'll need to redo them for .ork files.

Thanks for this information as well....When I go to Save As, then a box pops up, and my computer won't let me select .ork files as a choice, it defaults back to .rkt....
How do I reconfigure this?
I'm working on a Mac system...

Thanks for any help!

Hmm, interesting. If no one else does it first, I'll try this tonight on my Mac at home.

Thanks, that would be great. If someone could just take the 2 .rkt files that I posted and convert them to .ork files and post them back for me that would be great.
But I really need to know how to convert them on my own computer.

Thanks again!

Well, I forgot to look at this last night (will try again tonight or this weekend); in the meantime here are the two ORK files.

Thanks for posting these!

I'll be interested to see how you can explain to me how to convert these files on a Mac....

Thanks again!

Hello Franz, is the Mariah 38 or 54 still available? I thought that GLR stopped making them some time ago.

Well, that sucks....
I stupidly assumed that on the webpage, they had the 38 and 54mm versions available with upgrades to add to cart...
Just tried to add to cart, and only the motor retainers are available....
Why would an online supplier still have the product up and listed but not available?

Ok, plan B for a minimal diameter high altitude model, (that's available for purchase in spring of 2020) similar to the Mariah 38 and 54 would be_____________________?

Thanks for the heads up!

Two reasons:
1) for historical reference (useful)
2) because website updates are not a high priority (annoying).

Often, the only indication that a rocket is discontinued is that it is listed as "out of stock". And yeah that sucks because you can't tell if it's out of stock temporarily or permanently.

Just the way it is in the land of very small vendors with only a handful of employees.

I know, I really liked the look of the Mariah rockets and wanted one last year. Maybe they'll do another limited run, but when I asked, they had no immediate plans for more Mariah rockets in the near future.

As far as I know, if you just navigate from their front page, it isn't possible to get to the Mariah listing. The Mariah page is still there, but the only way to get there is via a search engine.

I'd highly recommend Mach 1 rocketry, especially if you are looking for quality fiberglass. I ended up buying the Alien Interceptor 38mm MD.

I get the historical reference thing, but yeah, it sucks...
This same sort of thing happens in RC Helicopters, a great model comes out, it gets hyped, then it (and the repair parts) disappear and it becomes obsolete in a short time....
Oh well, either I find a similar type actually available model kit, or maybe I scratch build one, although that breadbox AV bay looks tricky to copy....

Thanks again!

Cool, maybe I'll bump into you at Radrocks sometime.

Cool! I did my Level 1 cert there last Fall, and I was there last month to take my Level 2 written exam....
Aced it, 100% correct....If they had a waiver for over 5,000 ft., I would fly my L2 cert there!

Nice to meet you, my name is Franz Reck....

When you open the file in OR and do File -> Save As..., you should get this dialog:
upload_2020-2-8_20-19-12.png
Clicking on the File Format selector should give you the option of ORK or RKT file format. Select ORK, save, and you're good to go. Let me know if this works for you.

This has never worked for me (OpenRocket on Mac) so long as the file ends in .rkt. But if I rename the file to .ork first (even though it's still a RockSim file, OR will still open it), and then save it with the file format set to .ork, that has always worked for me.

Though I think the original question may have simply been how to open .ork files on a Mac, and the answer is to just use OpenRocket for the Mac, no conversion necessary. :)

EDIT: Nevermind, looked a bit higher up in the thread. So I'll just stick with my first statement.

I bet that this will work, I’ll try it when I get back....
I’m traveling to Wallops Island VA to hopefully see Antares launch tomorrow!

Thanks!
