Recently, I have printed and made some parts for free. A lot fo folks ask to pay me and I usually just tell them to pay it forward. For many, you are paying me with experience so I get better with my tools.

Is it rare across the hobby? It is common in my club.

Don't think it's rare at all.

I routinely give away rocket kits I know I'll never get around to building for various reasons (loss of interest in the project, etc.)

When recipients ask how they can repay, I tell them building the rocket and letting me see it fly is all I want out of the deal.

Have seen many rockets fly over the past couple of years.

I think it is common practice across clubs or like-minded people. I see this with the pyro clubs, the RC Aircraft club, and the group I mountain bike with. People are more than willing to share parts, tools, and knowledge with the only expectation that you do the same to someone else, especially when it comes to embracing a newcomer.

Isn't that why we get into clubs in the first place? Otherwise, just go fly by yourself.

I don't mind flying by myself. The other side of sharing and giving comes from my visiting Starbucks. More unconventional, yet you get more people outside the hobby.

I spend a ton of time designing and testing things, then I open source. So much money goes into just testing a system to see how reliable it is. Guess the best I can do right now as a student, because all the money I earn ends up going into these open source projects

I think the concept of pay it forward resonates with those that are business savvy (one might even say street smart). :)
