Almost all of the rockets that fly on M motors at our launches use 1010.
Same here, rail button size is a function of weight ("hanging weight") not motor thrust, though I would be curious if anyone has done studies on what forces and pressures are exerted on rail buttons at the time of launch.

BTW ... don't go commando with shorts on the salt ... interesting "parts" sunburn for the unaware.

For those with sensitive eyes: an inexpensive pair of shade 5 safety glasses (with sideshields) makes spending a day on the salt much easier to endure. Shouldn't have any problem finding them at a welding shop.

Sensitive eyes or not, shades are a must on the salt. Your eyes will sunburn, just like if you go snow skiing. Website is in-progress which will have all these details/suggestions. Coming soon!!!!

The range is pretty well defined. We plan on a 16 pad model rocket area in the center, 50 feet out from the flight line. At the other extreme, also in the center but about 1600 feet from the flight line 2 heavy pads for up to O impulse non complex. We can go further out if someone brings something bigger than that. The recovery area on the Salt Flats is huge after all. Be sure to let us know as far in advance as you can. Then we plan on a left and right range for the rest. They will mirror each other. If I recall correctly (I’m too lazy to find the map), we will have 8 pads at 250 feet for up to J impulse complex, 4 pads at 350 feet for up to L non complex, 8 pads at 500 feet for up to M non complex, and 4 pads at 1000 feet for up to N non complex. That’s a total of 50 high power pads. A club member is designing a high power pad capable of holding either a 1010 rail or a 1515. The prototype looks great. I neglected to take pictures so that will have to wait. We plan to sell many of the new pads at the end of LDRS since we don’t have storage space for them. We’re rather envious of Kloudbusters shipping containers.

Curious ... for heavier projects L @ 350' and further out from there, will we be able to drive out to a closer in cell/secondary waiting area. Maybe have a one way flank "cone" road/path to the away cells and a designated one way return to flight line road/path?

Having been on the salt many times in the past it can be rather disorientating without landmarks. Some folks might wander too close to active cells or drive chase vehicles all over the place.

Good ideas. The 1000 ft and 1600 foot pads will have the Flight Safety Review at an away cell. You can drive to those. I expect that you can also drive to the 500 foot pads, but probably not the 350. We’ll talk about it. In any event, when you drive to a pad, you need to come in from the side and exit to the side. I expect all of the driving to be managed from the away cell Flight Safety Review.

We plan to put a paint line on the salt, at least on the flight line and up the sides. And there will be cones at the corners. If you recover something further out we will ask you to go to the sides before moving toward the flight line.

The crowd at the flight line is a pretty good landmark.

Thanks, Steve. We almost never see an M on anything but 1515. We’ll take that into account as we complete the range design.

Joe

Side note...I'm not the first to say it, but I'll say it here...

1010 guides/buttons work just fine in 1515 rails. So a 1515 rail at the far pads can accommodate both sizes, whereas 1010 rails would only accommodate 1010 buttons. Just noting that a 1515 rail tends to be less constraining than 1010 at the far pads. I too fly M's on 1010 buttons frequently...in either 1010 or 1515 rails:).

Never been to an LDRS, but just made reservations at the Wendover KOA about 12 miles away! Now for that motor buy...hmmm. Moving into a new house in Tucson in a month, so I need to get the Rocket Build Lab going quickly.

You will like the pool after a long hot day on the salt flats. Sparkies look great and sound even better echoing off the salt. Just sayin.

Where will the banquet/member's meeting be?

Best -- Terry
We have a large number of rooms reserved at special rates for LDRS 39 at the Wendover Nugget Hotel and Casino. You will need to call in to make your reservations:

1-800-848-7300
or
1-775-664-2221

You'll need to give the code URC-29 to get the group rates ($59 + taxes and $99 + taxes).

This is also where the banquet will be hosted. (Same hotel as LDRS 17)

Someone asked me today if research motors will be allowed. Yes. Yes they will be. The launch will be conducted under Tripoli research rules, so Tripoli members level 2 or 3 can launch research motors up to their level of certification. NAR members and Tripoli members can also launch commercial motors up to their level of certification. Adult members of Tripoli and NAR may also launch model rockets, and youth (under 18) may launch model rockets without being a member of either organization (but why not join Tripoli for $10?). Adults who are not members of Tripoli or NAR will not be allowed past the flight line.

As of today, hotels.com has 2 rooms left at the Motel 6 for $48/night. The bad news is that you have to prepay. The good news is that it's half of what all the other hotels are charging, and it is fully refundable. Have stayed there multiple times for previous Hellfires, and it is perfectly adequate.

Official Hotel is posted with details here:

Plenty of rooms left for now. This is also where the banquet will be held

I know - but I'm *ahem* frugal. The $200 I save over 4 nights will pay for a couple K reloads. When money is short, I'd rather spend it on motors. Gotta keep those priorities straight!

Side note: having a vehicle payment again has REALLY put a crimp in my rocket budget.

This is _not_ the official hotel. Just someplace cheap and adequate. And less than .5 miles down the road from the official hotel. Apologies if I caused anyone to think otherwise.

It's not looking good for getting anything above the regular Hellfire 25,000' waiver.
Also, we are probably going to get the waiver to run from 7am to 3pm instead of the more typical 9am to 5pm. The best weather for flying is earlier in the day and the heat gets bad in the afternoon.

But its a dry heat!

But its a dry heat!

There’s definitely something to say about that.

Shame the salt reflects so much light, though. I’ll definitely have welding glasses, and enough zinc oxide to pass for a snowman.

I guess I may as well get a top hat and corncob pipe to complete the look.
