I didn't space the stringers inside the Av Bay perfectly so I'm going to have to figure out how to space the 8 retaining bolts on each end so they don't hit one of the stringers. That will take some thinking lol.

Chuck,

Pics of the areas in question would be great, to help us to visualize the problem.

Thanks,

Dave F.

Dave I posted pics of the bolt and nut assembly, the coupler (AvBay) where they will be attached when the airframe slides on and the inside of the coupler where the nut assembly will be.

The next pics are how I want to attach the airframe to each end of the Avionics Bay. Decided to go with a bolt setup that allows you to epoxy the holding nut inside the Av Bay.

Chuck,

What are the End Plates of the Av Bay like ( materials, etc ) ?

What is the "force-bearing structure" of the Av Bay for handling Recovery stresses ? Are the End Plates "load-bearing" ?

I have a theoretical "vision" of All-Thread being used to retain the End Plates, but it is in the early, "nebulous" phase at the present.

Yes, it will add mass but, at this point, it is merely a concept.

At this point, is actual Bolt placement the issue or interference from the "flange" on each Bolt ?

Chuck,

It's been very quiet here . . . Are there any updates ?

It’s all good! Got the beginning of the Class 3 paperwork submitted.

I haven’t started yet on the final build of the rocket but keep thinking about what needs to be done. Once started it should take 1-2 weeks to complete.

Of course will need to test the ejection charge cannons so that will be cool.

Thanks for asking Dave!

Chuck,

My "pocket protector" and slide rule were "getting dusty" . . . LOL !

Well the politics of the Tripoli Rocketry Association got me lol. From what I understand John Demar unfortunately got into a position of influence a few months ago. I knew that would be the death knell for this project and yep... it is lol.

Here's the requirements for me to fly a rocket out in the middle of nowhere during an "Experimental" launch in the Black Rock Desert:

• Projects/motors personally flown in the last 24 months and the results
• Rocksim and RASAero simulations performed by you
• BurnSim file of the proposed motor
• Fin Flutter analysis
• Motor retention method
• Fin can retention method
• Static burn test of the proposed motor
• Recovery system details including deployment details and ground test results
• Avionics details
• Arming and disarming procedure
• Ground support equipment needed
• Checklists
• Any special requirements of the BALLS staff

The top line says it all. Even though I've built a rock-solid rocket and have a solid support team Tripoli it appears simply doesn't want me to fly this rocket. Again John Demar has his hands right in this. He wins lol!

I'll be selling the very nice launch trailer and all supplies. The rocket itself I'll keep. I'll also sell the motor casings that John Demar built along with the liners. This time I'll stay out of the hobby for good.

Hands are full with the gold-mining, flying airplanes during Corona and other hobbies.

Thanks again to all of you for the help and encouragement. I simply don't have the time to play politics and deal with weak egos.

Take care.

Chuck

Sorry to hear that! I was never going to be able to go West to see it launch, but politics is a poor reason to have to kill the project. :(

Don't know anything about it or how they operate or who can launch there, but would that RRS group let you launch at their site?

Before you get the wrong impression, nothing on this list is unusual or will prevent you from flying at BALLS. This is due diligence, not politics. Other folks with ambitious BALLS projects get the same questions.

From personal experience, I can attest that the BALLS crew is very supportive, even with projects that are out there. They will ask questions, they will come over to your camp and check out your rocket, but they will do so to ensure that you are reasonably well prepared.

Like I said it's the first line of the request that they are focusing on. And trust me it's political. Got it from the highest of sources and Demar is all over it.

I'm not upset and in fact am relieved. With gold looking to spike far higher and the Corona affecting this country for the foreseeable future I'm going to concentrate on our mining operations in Northern Nevada. We may very well see big rocket launches canceled due to the spread of the virus. Not sure what is media hype and what is real in regards to how bad things are going to get.

If any of you know someone that wants a very nice launch trailer I'll sell this one at a very good price. Like I said I'm done with the hobby as at these levels the politics gets extreme and I simply don't have the time or energy.

Thanks!

Chuck

Did the 6 fire extinguishers, in the background, come with the motor case. I would strap some aluminum fins directly to the case and do a sub-min diameter Q...sounds so appealing to me!

Do you have a thrust curve graphed for that motor?

You beat be to it....I was going to make a comment about the fire extinguishers.

For the fins I would look at a honey comb construction. I have never built anything this big but I have been involved in R&D testing of items going on passenger jets and I have always been impressed with how strong honeycomb construction is.

Sorry Chuck; John DeMar has nothing to do with this.

Chuck,
1. We started on those rules before you started this project.
2. John DeMar has nothing to do with those rules or with BALLS, although he has flown there before. He is on the Research Committee. They don’t approve flights for BALLS.
3. If you really want to fly your rocket, fill out the form and take whatever steps are needed to comply with the launch requirements; everyone else does. But don’t make up some phony excuse to blame someone who has nothing to do with this.

Sorry to hear about you not flying this Chuck. There are a lot of things to go through on the list, but they make sense, and as others have stated they are normal for that type of rocket. Logistics for getting a large rocket away get quite onerous, including the paperwork. If you work through the list and get things done you could quite likely fly the bird. Personally I wouldn't rush it, it is a hobby that we do for enjoyment after all.

As for the first line on the list, it can be argued that you might have had a slow year and not launched much. It could be argued that you have a fantastic support team and mentors who will be assisting with the relevant stages of the prep. There are lots of ways of making relevant statements to get you across the line.

I would really like to see you fly this after all the work you and the team has put into it.

FYI, I would recommend a book called "Crucial Conversations", by Switzler, Grenny, and McMillan. It is a good easy read.
