Can I get a few bullet points on how to (software) select engines and choose ignition/staging to get a proper 2-stage sim out of a rocket? I have done this ad nauseum, and seem only to get either both engines to fire at the same time, or the sustainer to do nothing at all. I am doing something very wrong.

The file I am working with is this one. It is a rocksim file, but it is what I am working with.

After you add the two motors to your sim, select the sustainer motor and hit the 'select ignition' button. Use that to specify the ignition time of the sustainer. You can then sim, then plot the flight to make sure everything looks okay. The only other change I made to your file was to set both parachutes to deploy at apogee.

Thanks, it worked after I changed the sustainer to body tube like in your pic.

How did you do this?

Sim looks pretty much like I had figured (hoped).

Thanks again.

Double-click on Parachute in the Rocket Design tab and set it in the 'Deploys at' section on the config screen.

3" to 2.2" is a pretty good size for a two stage. Plenty of room for electronics and conduit in the sustainer. I had a 2.6" sustainer on my first two stage. Cardboard means it's light enough that you can fly on smaller motors and keep the altitude reasonable.
