I know it is bad luck to rename ships, but anyone else rename a rocket?

My club asks for a name on the flight card for launches. Lack of a name usually results in harassment by the LCO. Not being very creative I've let my girls have the honor of naming - with somewhat regrettable results.

Wondering if I am tempting fate by renaming...especially as I go for Level 2.

Def make this a tradition!! They'll get better - maybe keep em interested?

I did not like Estes' "Dark Silver", so I renamed mine to "Dark Matter" - it compliments the "Dark Energy" better.

Luck? I don't need luck :p

You have piqued my curiosity and I'm curious exactly what names your girls came up with? I'd like to know what girls could come up with that would be worse than teenage boys or adult males could come up with and could so offend your lco? I would be glad to have my kids be so interested in my rockets that they wanted to name them. I would probably take any name they would come up with as long as it was printable.

I will rename mine if I do a theme or some such. But can only think of one instance where I did rename one: my Cowabunga is named Wastelander. It is still going strong, it did hang on a power line overnight once but has fared much better than my other ones.

Name em what you want whenever you want

However if you name it something inappropriate and I’m the LCO, I will rename it for you :)

I have gotten to the point where I rarely keep the kit name.

Here are a few of mine and the original kit:

Spot- Baby Bertha
Sheesh Kabob - Scratch
Square Kabob - Scratch
Swoosh Kabob - Scratch
Tequila Mockingbird - Centuri?
The Bluebird of Happiness - Newway
The Indifferent Whatever - Estes Sprint
The Lupin Express - Scratch
The Mega Dwarf - Scratch
The Parawad Pal - Scratch
The Polar Viper - K&S Arctic Wolf
The Square Banana - Newway
Ye Olde Amish - Modified Big Bertha

Coming soon:
The Spanish Inquisition
The Entropy Collector
Is a Bear Catholic?
Ahhh! My spleen!
Baba Ghanoush
Donkey Hotey

I have a rocket that was built from parts from crashed rockets that I called Gary Gnu. After I crashed it*, I rebuilt it a named it Steve Austin.

*When you change the source of your shear pins, I recommend redoing your ground testing.

They didn't come up with anything offensive - nor would I allow it. It was a silly catch phrase from some teenage Disney show. The phrase is 'Bam What!!' They thought it was funny to hear the LCO say it.

More than anything I was curious if renaming was a thing. I think Huxter has the right idea. If naming the rocket keeps my girls interested, I will let them do it. I had redone a crappy paint job on the rocket and considered giving it a new name but I will still with their choice.

On flight cards it is common to see the manufacturer name followed by the name the flyer gave it.
Example I like, LOC Mother Lode, The Three Furys

I've decided to rename all of my rockets "I Can't Quite Make Out What It Says Here"

I've always wanted to name one Half Fast, and see what the LCO does with that.... :) Phil L.

If I recall correctly, in an interview a while back, John Boren said that coming up with a name was the hardest part of designing rockets. Now you're talking about coming up with more than one name for each rocket... :)

I have a friend who names their V-2 something different for every flight. I think the one that got the most reaction from the crowd was "To Winston From Werner"

For me, the name is almost always the design inspiration, so it doesn't make sense to change names.

I can't believe I forgot this one. Needs paint, but here is "The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch". Not really a rename as it is an original. A friend 3D printed me the nose cone and I built a rocket around it. I made the fins look like crusader shields and they will be white with red crosses like many crusaders had on their shields.

I can hear the (confusing) countdown now:

"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy sky"

I have enough trouble coming up with names for my scratch builds, let alone renaming something that already has a perfectly good handle.

That said, some just rename themselves. Way back I had an Estes k11 WAC Corporal that got to be called "Timex" because it just seemed like it would never die. (For those of you who were born too late, Timex made watches and their sales slogan was "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking")

This one got a new name because of the paint job...

...which was stolen from this:

A short, fat rocket with a paint scheme taken from a short, fat German race car could only be called...
"DAS FLIEGENSCHWEIN"!!
