There is a topic in Alternative History or time travel that claims there has been revisions in the current reality.

One of the examples is in the spelling of the Bernstein Bears series name. Some people remember the spelling one way, others another.

Some remember the painting of King Henry VIII holding a turkey leg, others not.

Some remember the arrival of the Titanic in NYC, others that it sank.

What is the name of this effect? There's a term for it. And is there a wikipedia entry for it?

I think what you're talking about is coined The Mandela Effect. It looks like the real effect is actually: Confusion, i.e. humans have an imperfect memory.

Or it could be true, hundreds of people undergo a momentous dimension shift into our world where McDonalds is spelled "McDonalds" and not "MacDonalds."

There are great documented examples of this. One involved a live TV show in the 1960s that invited a different guest each week. Right before air time for one particular episode, the invited guest died of a heart attach in the studio. It did not happen on the air. When it was show time, the host spoke live on camera telling people what happened, and that they would air a rerun instead.

Decades later, there are people who will tell you they saw the show and were watching when the guy had his heart attack and died onscreen.

There is also a rumor that Jimi Hendrix was a guest on a variety show, and when the host asked him what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist, he said, "Go ask Phil Keaggy." But this never happened, even though there are people who will tell you they saw it, and will name the program and the host.

There are some people that will swear there was a thread on these forums where I was actually voted the #1 rocket builder, others claim to never have seen it. I think it just has to do with the end of the large wormhole that orbits between the Moon and the Earth that sometimes gets too close.

The man from Taured is an interesting case, if the stories are true

Wait, by the rules of the Mandela Effect, there is no such thing as a documented example. All references available in the real world are contrary to the so-called vivid memories that these people have.

It is logical to conclude the believers in this would put forward their prime occurances in giving instances of this. Scroll through a list, and you'll see that the vast majority are different spellings of easily confused words; and iconic, often repeated, often parodied pop-culture stuff. Come on people, there is no alternate universe where Field of Dreams says "if you build it, they will come." It's a popular misquote, always has been. It is has been adapted and parodied to death, and most repetitions of it use "they." We've almost reached this point with Sarah Palin. I'm sure I could find people that would swear up and down that she said she could see Russia from her house, and they heard her say it.

A lot of these people are 100% sure that Darth Vader says, "Luke, I am your father." Just because they misremember a very common misquote, does not mean they have slipped into our dimension from another one where Vader actually said, "Luke, I am your father."

Never underestimate the need to one-up or embellish. People hear the Hendrix/Keagy story repeated often enough, it MUST be true, so wouldn't it be cool if I tell people I actually heard it, or give a plausible (unrecorded of course) show or interview where it came from. BTW, Keagy is a phenomenal player. It's not too difficult to imagine through the years, somebody mentioned that if Hendrix heard this, he would have to admit Keagy is the greatest and not him. The legend grew from there.

Watch the TV series "Brain Games" and you will see why an eye witness, which is the most trusted way to get a conviction in court, is also the least reliable. Our brains, thus our memories, are very selective and maleable.

My wife accuses me of creating alternate history, usually slanted in my favor, most every day. She's probably right.

I assume you mean the Berenstain Bears: https://www.berenstainbears.com

No, the adherants to this belief "vividly remember," that it was spelled Berenstein. They ignore the fact this is an peculiar spelling/sound combination that is EASY and probably common, to misread, especially when one knows the auditory word and thinks the spelling will be a certain way. Nope, they conclude there must be alternate dimensions or multiple universes. They must be remembering one of them where it is spelled Berenstien. I do notice it usually involves simple, easy to confuse spellings. No one claims they remember the same series being called the "Smith Bears." Hmmmmmmm

For those newbies who don't know why Fred posted that, it falls into this category. "Cato" was originally just an abbreviation of "catastrophe," like "combo" for "combination." Somewhere along the way, it got retconned into CATO, or "catastrophe at take-off."

At least that's the way you remember it. ;)

Your cato origin file link has.... cato'ed.
.
Yes, i don't use Earthlink anymore and have not bothered to upload a copy onto a website where it can be easily linked-to.

Man, that was a funny scene! Should have gone a step farther and called it "Mick Donald's." :D

I remember it being Bernstein Bears and I remember the band "Men with Hats" who wrote Safety Dance, however if you search it now it's "Men Without Hats" because I slipped dimensions about 6 months back. More proof that reality is permeable :p

I distinctly remember my dad building a room addition onto my childhood house. But my mom tells me they built it before I was born. Probably I have it confused with them building the garage addition.

I remember a hotel on the edge of the Salton Sea called "The Great Salton Sea". It was, as of last memory, about half a mile from the actual water due to evaporation

Was that Yesterday movie any good? I saw a lot of ads for it and thought it seemed like a goofy idea for a movie. Then again, I watched "The Lobster" with Colin Farrell and Rachel Wiesz thinking it might be good.

Oops, double post. Forum response time for me is terrible at the moment. I can type faster than it can display. And since I am a hunter and pecker that is painfully slow.

I thought the movie was ok. It’s had a good concept. The reveals were neat. It just seemed like something was missing for me and I don’t know what. Although perhaps that was part of the concept.
