I am interested in building an upscale Estes ESAM-58 FG 8" 14-16 ft. Would also like to build it to take a Loki 152mm 57.5 inch case. The kit is something I would have Wild Man make for me.

This is a 8 fin configuration kit. What I would like input on is can this be built with the ability to fly in two different configurations? First configuration with the fins off set as shown in the photo, this being the original configuration. Second configuration with the fins aligned.

I came up with dual configuration idea when I was trying to figure out the best way to transport it when built. If the fins were aligned it would make it easier. What I am wondering is can I build the booster in two pieces. The aft portion assembled with the first set of fins and a coupler tube slotted and glued in to this aft section. This assembly would slide into the fwd booster section and be secured with screws. The aft section would need to have two sets of slots and pre drilled holes to be able to rotate to either the offset or aligned configuration.

Just started working on the RockSim file, FYI I am not highly skilled in RockSim but I am chipping away at it. Any guidance or input is greatly appreciated.

Here is the kit, some photos and my current RockSim file.

Please scan the fins and decals with a ruler for scale, along with the instructions. And I will see what I can do to help you scale it using OpenRocket.

The Sasha and ESAM are similar with some minor fin add-ons to the Sasha (little dowel things) and the Sasha is two stage so it can be done if you use the Sasha to help.

Attached is the Rocksim file I started. And the scans you asked for.

Thank you!

Thanks for the scans! I'm starting from scratch on the sim (prevents errors from scaling slipping in).

I have a few other questions... It looks like the instructions are missing a page, I didn't see anything on the motors you'd use for the kit. How long are the launch lugs? Their diameter? The shock cord, length/width? Thickness of the fins? Length of the motor tube?

Thanks again!
Jim

Another problem just cropped up... I followed the link to Hobby Lobby, and it lists the motors. I was expecting 24mm motors, but it's an 18mm powered kit. I don't have any info on the retainer. I'm going to need a measured drawing about the cap and the retainer to allow me to accurately sim that.

I have an idea, please PM me your mailing address :D

Hi Mustang67,

I've found a problem with the scans of the fins... The drawings give the fwd fins as 4.93"... The scan with the fin and the printable ruler give a number as 6.69". I'm more inclined to trust your numbers (4.93"), but I'm curious as to why there's a discrepancy.

All The Best!
Jim

Hi Jerry,

Thanks! So, did you really send one to China? or eRockets? Either way, I'm looking forward to getting it!

Thanks Again!

Pointy Side Up!
