Last week, some friends were delivering a couch (really good friends!). I had to shovel a path through my garage. Not wide enough, had to quickly move some more boxes.

And there, buried for 3 plus years, I found one of my missing boxes of rockets! Plus 7 CTI 29mm reloads and four complete casings, but that wasn't necessarily as thrilling.

Anywho, it was so cool to find these! I had been wondering where they had gotten to. (Aside: bought house, moved in, started unpacking, discovered mold and termite damage in basement, put everything back into garage and have been remediating ever since.)

I thought I would share some of these with the rocketry world, just because I can.;)

More to follow! I do wish I'd taken some "before" pictures...
 
Here's the bottom layer. This was completely full when I discovered it. There were a bunch of rockets that I moved into the Take-It/Fly-It box. Stuff that I didn't think I'd fly again. That way someone else will get a chance to fly them.

Old friend #1: My L1 Cert rocket. It's an upscaled Fliskits Corona. 1.9" Aerotech tubing, with a 4" coupler for the ringtail, 29mm MMT.

Flew fine on an F27-4. First HPR attempt was a CATO (DMS). So I rebuilt it. Second HPR attempt it did that "long tall rockets with small fins do weird things with their CG/CP" thing, and I went from hoping to pass to praying that no one would get injured. (In hindsight, that flight should not have gotten me my L1.)

Well, it's mostly rebuilt again (third time). I even had a can of roughly the same color paint! Just waiting on an order for the remaining bulkhead, and it's ready to fly! The first picture was what was salvageable after the 2nd mishap. In the 2nd picture it's had a new section of tubing spliced in, and is next to the carbon-fiber coated version that I started a couple years ago. (The carbon fiber version is going to get a 38 mm MMT, 5.38" coupler for the ring-tail, and may just see a Loki 38 mm K. Eventually.)

Also, after playing around with Open Rocket, I added 4 oz of ballast to the nose, held in place with foam. That should take care of that dip in the CG/CP ratio at the start of the flight.

This was going to updated as I progressed. Yeah, didn't happen that way. Here is the Upscale Corona, ready to fly again! OK, still need to load wadding and chute, but the rest of it is good to go!IMG_0113.JPG

The Baby Orion has been discontinued by Semroc. Right about the time I was ready to finish this little guy, Randy Boadway put the stickers on clearance. How serendipitous is that?

That rocket should have its first test flight this weekend. It's been simmering in the background for a while. If the flights go well, and I can make a few additional modifications, I'm planning to submit to Apogee's rocket of the month contest, so I'd prefer not to release too many details on the forum until they've rejected the plans.;)

Looks like a winner to me. Only problem could be licensing fees. Saw Mr. Stine from Estes talking on a video about how they are in negotiation to produce models of some commercial space rockets, but the licensing fees can be too high. Apogee might have the same problem if they want to publish a design using a commercial product. But good luck!

Yeah. Not sure what the licensing issues would be on a sport scale version. The licensing would effect naming and branding, I suspect. I copied the Blue Origin logo for my own personal use. Thinking about licensing issues, I have an alternate set of decals for the Recent Swale, by Azure Inception...

I heard those have a tendency to hang in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.
 
Update on the old friends. I took some of them to this weekend's launch. Overall I was 5.5 for 8.

Arapahoe E (E15-7), SGM (E9-6), and Ion Collector 3D (D12-5) had great flights. So did recently rediscovered and completed Art Applewhite 24mm Helix on a D12-0, and my new Semroc Jupiter B on a B6-0.

The first flight of the Upscale Corona on a F27-4R was good on the up part, right until it acted like a F27-0. The chute deployed, minor damage to the rocket, overall a success (This was the half). 2nd flight was on a G74-6W. Again, the up part went well, indicating that I have probably solved the stability issue. Unfortunately, the "ejecting the parachute" part did not go so well. It separated, but didn't deploy the chute. Came in with a sort of tumbling motion that ended in a loud THUNK. Will need to trim 2" from the body, and replace the part of the BT that attaches to the nose cone. Sigh. (Re)build number 4 this winter. Good thing I'm not stubborn about this sort of thing.;)

The final flight was my cloned Estes Ram Jet. First flight, had separation but chute didn't deploy, I never saw it come down. I got a general direction from other attendees, but I decided I was just going to write off the $4.00 in parts, if any had survived.

But hey, I got 8 launches in on a single day! Overall I'll call that a win!


The sport scale New Glenn was attempted two weekends ago. I knew it was binding on the rod, but didn't think that much about it. Motor lit, it hung up on the rod, and popped the launch pad a couple inches in the air before tipping over sideways. Still a work in progress.

Bill any record of the lot code on your F27-0R? I just had this happen this morning on one date coded 090319.
