I lost a rocket in a corn field but luckily found it a month later. The problem is I can't get the phenolic liner out of the motor now (Aerotech K550). I've tried heating it in a oven to about 170 degrees but it still wont budge. Any ideas?

Had the same problem. What worked for me was heating the inside of the liner with a blow torch. Slid right out. Use heavy gloves, because the casing will get hot!

Not hot enough, I assume, to remove the temper? (That would be somewhere above 350F)
No. I just put the flame in the hole, but do not allow it to touch anything. I just heated it until the casing felt a little warm through my leather glove, then poked the liner right out with a piece of PVC pipe.

I had a liner stuck in an AMW 76mm case for about 2 years. Eventually I drove it out with a 5 pound hammer and an oak dowel. Sharpened the dowel so that it could almost slip between the liner and case and then smacked it with the hammer. It chipped the liner out slowly but it all eventually came out. Lesson learned was either use no grease between liner and case or use a lot more. I used just enough to act like a glue.

This is what I do. I've talked with several folks who do say that grease will act more like glue if it gets hot enough and will be hard to remove from the case. So they don't use grease. But I was also taught by my motor mentor to use lots of grease to help fill any air void between the liner and case. So I've always used liberal amounts of brake lining grease. Usually liners slide out easily but every once in a while I have to get the dowel out. I do make a sharp edge so it grabs the liner. Once under the liner a rubber mallet will drive it down the length of the motor case, splitting the liner open as it goes. Occasionally the dowel will break at the end and I'll need to resharpen it. I then use Ballistol to clean the cases and it works pretty well.

Be careful of any method that may scratch the inside of your case. Add me to the group that uses lots of grease. Liners always slide right out when they're warm. Don't let them get cold if you can help it.

I agree, dump the contents ASAP, do the final cleaning later if you are rushing.

What harm does scratching the inside do?
Probably nothing, but if it's deep enough, you create a void between the liner and the metal that could overheat and bulge the case. Someone will be along momentarily to tell you I don't know what I'm talking about. And that may be true!

had a few.....some of those others work on regular stuck...but pia stuck needs the heat

Well I did the gentle tapping with a perfect size wood dowel. Now its stuck and I appear to have bent the threads on the other end of the casing. Guess I wasn't so gentle, LOL. Anyone have an extra 54/1706 case they don't want?

Wildly late addition to the thread but I came across it today while looking to solve this same problem and wanted to add some clarity I found missing.

Used the oven set to 250 and then grabbed a dowel to push it out. I didn’t have a dowel the exact size of the casing so I used a smaller one and slid it along one side to catch the lip of the liner.

For some reason I always just assumed everyone had the correct size dowel but I’m guessing many don’t and similarly use what’s on hand.
