Here are a few pictures I found. At first I thought they went with the Black Brant pictured earlier but it's a different building.

In the rear of this photo you can see a Black Brant VIII. The VC reminds me of the rocket depicted in the Peter Always drawing of the BBVIII. The booster has entirely different marking though.

Now that third picture is a real eye opener! I wish I had seen that one a few days ago. I am building the Rocketarium BBVa/b kit as a Vc. Thursday I added the upper band and I added a lower band. I wasn't too sure about the lower band but I knew there had to be something going on there not detailed in the kit. I could not see anything clearly in the pictures that I had so I figured there must be another band. This picture clearly shows no lower band--err...

So now I need to decide if I am going to try to remove the band or leave it. I have an idea...

Well I can clearly see a few things not quite right. The step down is not large enough at the motor joint. The detail is just skipped over as well. The other thing is that I need to make the flanges a little wider so there is room for some simulated bolts.

Hmmn… This is one of those times when I have to tell myself it's only sport scale. I am sure it will be recognizable when done.

John,

This is so weird. I was just thinking that I would like to do a BB VIII but that is I did I would do it using the same size tubes you used in yours. We both started with a 1/10h scale rocket and decided to step it up to appr. 1/8th scale to add more detail.

Thank you,
-Bob

Oops. I said I didn't have the combination of color and dimensions for any 4-finned BB VC, other than the one with the S-19 unit. But when I was filing the drawing of the "stubby" round in my binders, I discovered that I had data for the "Dynamo Mag" mission. I just checked the website I got the material from, but the URL is dead no, but at least I had the sense to download an image of a drawing with payload segment length and some color photos:

There's a video of the launch here:

I think I got the original link from that video a few years back, and managed to grab the images then.

Here is a jargon-filled abstract from a paper that came from this flight: https://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2011AGUFMSA13B1889B

Those are some great pictures and video to boot! That was awesome! I wonder what the second rocket in the video was. I couldn't quite make it out.

Thank you for posting them,

OK, I found a listing of Black Brant flights at Gunter's Space Page, and found this line about the "stubby" Black Brant with the 14 inch Orion-sized payload:

xxx xxx Black Brant-5C 12.10.1990 * And NASA 21.102IE (NEED II/Ferdinand 80)

"And" means it was launched at the Andoya, Norway, range. I sent a message to Andoya asking for a photo. No idea if they will respond.

From there, I was able to locate a little more info from the astronautix site:

1990 October 12 - . 20:28 GMT - . Launch Site: Andoya. LV Family: Black Brant. Launch Vehicle: Black Brant VC.
  • NEED II (F-80) Aurora mission - . Nation: USA. Agency: NASA. Apogee: 304 km (188 mi).

More information if it appears...
