So sorry to hear. Praying for her Family, Friends, and Fans.

Rest In Peace Jessi

Probably an unpopular opinion:

These kinds of deaths piss me off. I know she was doing something she loved, and she knew the dangers, but it still seems like such a useless risk to take. She was trying to break a land speed record... that she previously set. Gambled her life for little benefit that I can see, and lost.

True. There's something to be said for living your life the way you want, but that doesn't end up meaning much to those you leave behind.

I have always wanted to try skydiving, but now that I have kids, there's just no way. I know the odds are higher that I'll get hit by lightning than die in an accident, but I just won't take the risk. Gave up my motorcycle, too.

I enjoyed her appearances on Mythbusters when she filled in when Kari was pregnant. It took me a day to realize that's who she was as I didn't recognize her at first. I thought she did a better job to be honest. Kari always came across as a little light in the science department (being nice here and said science instead of what I really wanted to say).

I agree that this seems senseless to me, but we can't legislate all danger out of life. One person has been killed at a rocket launch and others trying to recover rockets; so do we make rocketry illegal just to keep people alive?

Nobody was talking about legislation, or making things illegal to do. Just pointing out that some risks aren't worth taking.

While she was attempting to break her own record for the fastest woman, the team was also making an attempt at the overall land speed record, which currently stands at around 770mph. JFK's Rice University speech comes to mind here "Why climb the highest mountain..."

Take the wings off an F104 and drive it at 480 mph, what could go wrong?

Why is there a separate record for women? I get it in sports like track and field. But for land speed, physiological differences between men and women should be mostly irrelevant. These cars that go after records like this are large team projects. I assume the women's record doesn't require an all female design/build team or anything, right?

Had nothing to do with that. Sounding like the braking system failed, may have used parachute(s) that failed for whatever reason. Car didn't slow down enough before getting to the end of the lakebed. Not the first time this has happened with land speed record-seeking cars.

1964 - Craig Breedlove's "Spirit of America" jet car, both chutes ripped off and the brakes could not slow it enough or also failed. Car ended up in a pond/lake.

I really dug her show Overhaulin and All Girls Garage was cool. Jessi was really good at articulating the skill and details of shop fabrication. I could watch her shows all day long.

R.I.P. Jessi.

Identity politics, just like everything else in today's society.

its nothing new. gar wood was breaking his own records water a hundred years ago.
don campbell in the 60s.

Always a bit amusing, but mostly sad and BS, when white guys belittle accomplishments made by women and minorities.

None of you detractors have the cojones or ability to do what she did.
What does race have to do with anything? That comment is the only racist thing in this thread.

It doesn't matter what race any of us are, when someone dies doing something I tend to wish they hadn't been doing it.

This particular activity seemed like a gamble I was surprised someone would take, but do I have to be willing to take the same risk in order to have an opinion on someone else doing it? No. That's stupid.

What is BS is your lame, cliched response that completely misses the point. Nobody belittled the accomplishment. A question was asked about the relevancy of gender to driving a car. You immediately throw out race and start labeling people. Classy.

Obviously, you don't know the first rule of oppression Olympics. To criticize, or even have an opinion of someone's group identity, you need to be one of the infinite intersectional class' above the group that you dare to criticize. Otherwise, you are a fill-in-the-blank aphobe.

Now self-flagellate and fall back into the group-think like a good citizen.

I was replying to Message #17 with AdAspera's quote and Buckeye's reply that pretty much belittled Jessi's "women's record". And yes I do see that kind of belittlement by white guys against achievements by women and minority role models, far too often.

And there's the second racist post in this thread. George, you're the only one that thinks race is a factor in this conversation. Why don't you drop it while you're behind?

Racing's important to men (and in this case Women) who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting. quote Michael Delaney unquote

I don't expect many of you to understand this statement. you cannot possibly understand unless you've done it. But that is why Jessi Combs did what she did.

R.I.P. Jessi, I understand

Well said . . .

The color of a person's skin, or whether they are male or female ( XY or XX DNA ), makes absolutely zero difference, either in recognizing their accomplishments or pointing out the lack, thereof.

However, everything beneath that skin or within that body, composed of either XY or XX DNA, speaks volumes about the "content of one's character" . . .

That is where praise or condemnation should reside because, after all, what you do, what you think, and what you believe, makes you what you are and Society WILL judge you on that, whether it "offends" you, or not !

Jessi Combs died, doing what she loved . . . She will be missed !

Video has been released of the crash. Not going to watch it.

I'm really pissed at her death. Not at her, just that it seems she died too soon.

But it seems like I get pissed off by a lot of stuff now days.
