President Trump formally announced the re-establishment of the U.S. Space Command on Thursday after a 17-year absence as his administration focuses on concerns about the vulnerability of U.S. satellites.

"Just as we have recognized land, air, sea and cyber as vital warfighting domains, we will now treat space an independent region overseen by a new unified geographic combatant command," Trump said during a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.

Where can we enlist!

Those fruit loops from Mayberry wouldn't know what to do. I'm betting the alien has more ammo than Barney.

All jokes aside, this makes sense. Each service branch has its own "space force". This move is not only a cost-saving but might be a touch of brilliance if set up correctly. The branches were initially opposed because they thought they would lose power over some of their own force. Instead, they are getting increased capability and collaboration.

"Old" US Space Command - 1985 - 2002 (they decided to disband it right after I retired... because I'd retired ;-)
"New" US Space Command - 2019 - ????

Even if they had kept the old letterhead they'd have needed to change it anyway thanks to the slightly new emblem.

New Space Command's Flag Sure Looks A Lot Like Old Space Command's Flag
Although the idea of an independent Space Force has made headlines for years now, Space Command isn't new. Even its flag hearkens back to the 1980s.

We need someone from Leave it to Beaver and Fonzie and Mork from Ork to really get it going.

Maybe Gillian is available.
"Oh! Gilligan screwed it up! He always screws it up! Why don't they just kill him? The professor worked on that coconut radio for three months. Now how the hell are they gonna' get off that island? And I'll tell ya - something's going on with that Skipper. You don't get that fat eating coconuts." - Red Foreman watching Gilligan's Island on That 70s Show

And they probably don’t keep their one bullet in their pocket.

All kidding aside, that has got to be one seriously cool job. Join the Army and go fight on the ground; join the Navy and go fight at sea; join the Air Force and go fight in the air; join the Space Command and go fight ... no one! Just enjoy orbiting the Earth on the government's dime!

The Space Command is not the same thing as the proposed Space Force or Space Corps. Space Command is a Defense Department command that is composed of forces from different existing US Armed Forces, such as the Air force, Navy etc. The proposed Space Force would be its own branch of the military. So you won't be able to enlist in Space Command. It's not Rico's Roughnecks.

Most likely the Space Command will focus on anti-satellite technology as well as anti-anti-satellite, anti-anti-anti-satellite, anti-anti-anti-anti-satellite, and so forth.

The Air Force Space Command has existed since 1982.

Air Force Space Command

Organization

Air Force Space Command is a major command of the United States Air Force, with its headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, and subordinate to U.S. Space Command. AFSPC supports U.S. military operations worldwide through the use of many different types of space operations, and is the primary space force for the U.S. Armed Forces.
