Someone (maybe Fliskits) did a rocket with "ears" for fins? But I could totally see foot-shaped fins and a cool decal making a great rocket. Short and fat would be a thing of beauty.

Package that with a new version of the Estes Bigfoot Launch Pad and you've have something that would sell to both BARs and kids.

Estes--Take our Money!

I can't look at the Bigfoot pad anymore without thinking about how "relatively easy" it would be to convert into a Quadcopter. Add motors and props on top of the feet, electronics inside the battery compartment. But I probably won't get around to doing that.

1) Bring back the classics with some sort of twist - upscale, different decals, larger motor mount, etc. I love the Cherokee E with the different color decals, E motor mount and longer body tube.

The recently released Multi-Roc is cool but I would be running out to get one right away if they upscaled it to a BT55 body tube size. It would be so much cooler in a slightly larger size. Same with the Citation Patriot, if they did it in a BT80 size, more people would be excited. These kits are still cool but how about getting a little crazy and brings us something that gets us all excited.
Lots of people are saying upscale, upscale, upscale. I say bigger isn't always better. Bring-backs are, in general, just fine in their original sizes, with laser cut fins of course.

The entire Atlas, Delta, and Titan fleets with all booster configurations available, and made in BT60 to BT80 tubes. Just imagine...a Delta IV Heavy about 4 1/2 feet tall or an Atlas V 551 with all its external boosters loaded with 18mm motors and a core 29mm. I will sell my organs for a fleet like that. :D
Even better, IMO, would be to have this whole line in the same scale, not all with the same tube size.

Unless Estes can greatly improve their current starters/ignitors...
Clusters or no clusters they need to improve their starters/igniters. I've seen lots of Estes igniters smoke out, but never a Q2G2. It's not rock... Well, OK, it is rocket science, but it's not brain surgery.
One take away from the forum at NARAM is that whatever it is you’d like to see from Estes the suggestions are more likely to be considered if you post on either Estes official FB page or the Estes fan FB page.
OK, then, one thing they should do is use the real web! A FB page is not a substitute for a web page. They show the catalog and take orders on the real web; they should operate a forum and suggestion box there; screw FB. (Quite a number of businesses make this mistake and, perhaps you can tell, it's a pet peeve.)

I'd love to see reissues of the great Centuri kits. They own the rights, so why not bring them back? Twister, Groove Tube, Fireflash, etc...etc...
There are so many great Estes and Centuri designs from 60s/70s/80s!
In the '70s I thought that Century had lots more really cool kits than Estes. The Centuri catalog was a thrill, and the Estes catalog was meh. I've recently looked at scanned catalogs on the web, and I wasn't wrong; the Centuri designers had it all over Estes. So, do lots of Centuri bring-backs. I want a Flutter-by.

Also, bring back the Bigfoot Launch system.
Bring back and improve the Centuri Power Pad launch system. Improve it with a relay (or JFET circuit) at the pad, which makes it a bunch better for clusters. I know those batteries are hard to find these days (Duracell and Ray-O-Vac, at least, do still make them) so Estes could put them in the catalog for users' convenience.

EDIT: And another thing: more engine choices in 18 and 24 mm. I'm sure there are reasons that B motors and 18 mm C motors only come in B6 and C6, but work them out. Bring back the B14. Use the same idea (a partial depth core hole) to make a high thrust A, maybe A10ish* and a 24 mm higher thrust C, somewhere in the neighborhood of a C16**.

And put in a wider variety of parts. (Yes, another thing from the '70s Centuri catalogs.) We can get that from places like BMS and eRockets, but if Estes wants my money they should do it too. When you want to kitbash the fins from this and the nose cone from that, why not just order the fins from this and the nose cone from that?

Yes, I know, there's a 13 mm A10, but it's really not. According to Thrust Curve, the average thrust is only 2.5 N. I'm talking about full 2.5 Ns and average thrust that really is somewhere around 10 N.

EDIT AGAIN: Thinking more on it, C20 and A9 are better WAGs.

Way back when I was in 7th grade I was into building models, mostly race cars and hot rods. My grades in english were not doing so hot so to entice me to get better grades my parents bought the "Der Big Red Max Deluxe Model Rocketry Outfit". This was the package that had the biggest Red Max of all at over two feet tall and included the Big Foot Launch pad. Dad said that if I got my english grade up at least 1 grade level I could have it. They put it up on top of a shelf where I could see it, and if I asked they would pull it down and let me look at the packaging.

I brought my grade from a D to a B+ in around four months. Built the rocket and then many many more. I would buy this kit again just to put it on a shelf and remember what my parents did to encourage me.

The most recent kits that are Goonie-like would be the Jetliner and the Curvilinear - neither of which were “whimsical” like the original Goonies. This is a tough one to justify since the whole Goonie thing has sort of a groovy 70s vibe so not sure what Estes could sell that would hit the nostalgia button and appeal to younger buyers. Intriguing idea though.

When I got my lathe, I got tasked by a SEVRAite to "make me something" out of a chunk of wood he'd had laying around, so I made him an "Honest Goon" nosecone

The bigfoot was good, but the battery contacts would fil after a while (not spring steel). That could be fixed, but why? The new controller with 6 C cells or a LiPo together with the large upgraded lifetime launchpad are perfect as is. Just buy new steel rods at Lowes or Home Depot for the larger rods.

I can't find the new pad on the website, but it is in the catalog and people have seen it in the real world....

Tim,

That's an amazing story. Clearly, you had some great parenting. I'd love to see the "long" version of the Red Max come back along with that Bigfoot Launch Pad.

The Centuri PowerPad was a great design. I've often wanted to create a modern version using a weighted metal base in the same shape as a 6 Volt lantern battery, but incorporating a relay and a 12 volt lithium battery instead. That would make for an easily transportable LPR launcher, with enough juice for clusters and more reliable ignition.

And I agree that way too many companies rely on Facebook as their sole means of interacting with their customers. Web based forums are a great way to do it directly on your site--and monitoring 3rd party forums like TRF are a less biased way of seeing how people really feel about your products and services.

All rocketry firms should closely monitor forums like TRF to glean these insights. Estes would see a lot of love for their brand, and get some great ideas on which products might be worth developing or bringing back.

Just as an aside, I've run across a bunch of restaurants that post their menus and other information only on Facebook. I don't go there. Not out of spite, but because I can't see their information and and I can see someone else's. Companies that do that are shooting themselves in the feet.

I'd sure like to see a re-release of
1) The K21 Gemini Titan (even a (gasp!) plastic capsule would be ok!) BT70 2-engine cluster
2) If you're going to re-release some Centuri items, the Aero-Dart (Enerjet issue) would be one I'd sure-as-heck-by get...
3) and a big second on the B14 and C5 core/semi-core burners

Sell / ship outside the US. There is no reason why Canada needs to be excluded despite a higher shipping cost. (Or has it something to do with using a dedicated warehouse / shipper like UPS?!!)

Yes, motors are an exception, but how many people buy / mail-order Estes motors from Estes?! (At least I'm assuming no one really does..)

Technology.

Develop a better and smaller altimeter. I’ve never seen anyone recommend theirs.

Smaller Chute release? Lease or buy the patent or whatever necessary from jolly logic.

Camera designed for rockets. Even smaller and lighter than the 808 keychain cameras. Maybe one with a live feed back to the phone.

Maybe even an altimeter app. Mark the launchpad, mark your location and track the rocket with your phone. It could do some trigonometry to calculate the altitude.

More affordable gps or recovery system.

Would also love to see more PSII kits and a more affordable rail to launch from. Even the 1/4” rod feels flimsy with these bigger rockets. I’d love to try to launch from a rail.

You missed one . . .

Let's just ask the question, "Is the world ready for Estes Astron Dual Deployment" rockets ?

Would really like to this. Seems like could easily be fit into the space of a BT50 nose cone, maybe even a long this BT20. Putting it into nose cone would help rocket stability, the lens on the camera is small, so could still be rear facing.

Definitely a camera system! Like an Astrocam for the modern age with the classic styling, but all the fancy features like live link to phone/pc, slow-mo capture for the moment of lift-off, and maybe even multiple angles like one lens looks down and another looks out horizontally.

I'd LOVE to see Estes pay homage to one of their classics... The Cineroc/OMEGA... I know that Estes isn't going to produce a digital camera rocket again for a long time. But what I'd love to see is a blow molded nosecone with the classic shape in black high impact polystyrene plastic, and an injection molded shroud (for the mirror) along with an appropriate first surface mirror, the decal, and the classic yellow electrical tape.

My dream has the blow molded nosecone with small engraved marks that would allow for proper placement of the shroud (as a guide the drilling for the camera body's holes). These holes could be filled easily by an appropriate putty if someone opts not to do the shroud. The nosecone would be cut into three parts, the forward nosecone (with a shoulder to fit inside...), the camera body, and the aft transition (again with a shoulder to fit inside the camera body). The shroud would then be glued to the camera body after the holes are drilled. It would also have a pair of keyed bulkhead plates, one that would be glued in, filled and sanded flush with the aft transition (for a modern (slick) design), and another (classic reproduction) that would fit a switch that matches the original's On/Off switch (perhaps a place for someone to install a modified Dollar Store Personal Alarm for recovery assistance). Seeing how the 808 camera is dominating the hobby scene, it would also have a molded sled for mounting the 808's guts inside, along with the instructions needed for the 808's mods. (along with a couple of disclaimers... 1) not included, 2) not liable for messed up cameras). They could use my CinerocDV idea for the decals, or not.

The Omega would be built using updated methods (slotted tubes, laser cut balsa, etc), and for larger motors, but externally would be identical (save for the engine hooks), and include the frequently shown, but never included, cineroc/OMEGA body tube decal.

I know that Randy Boadway (Semroc) has the rights to the Omega, and the Cineroc, but I think he's a reasonable guy, and would allow it.

Cool Story!

With the modern DRM, you could clone it using an 18" body tube. You *MIGHT* not have the white "MIT GRABBEN/NICHT STOMPEN" decals though. Also, you might have to pay attention to the kitting date of the DRM, as some of them have apparently been missing the white nosecone decal. More on that here: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threa...ants-x882-decal-question.151815/#post-1908645

One thing that I haven't been able to establish yet (or at least to my sleep deprived brain's memory retention) is if the DBRM ever had the blow molded nosecone, or was shipped with the injection molded nosecone only. Your image (from the 1978 catalog) seems to show a white injection molded nosecone. Though the 1979 catalog seems to show a blow molded nosecone... I have yet to see instructions for one showing the blow molded nosecone. Anyone? Anyone?

Upscales are good. And everybody loved PSII at the clearance prices.

But downscales are awesome, too. I’ve shrunk both the QCC and Cosmic Explorers down to 13mm motors. I love those little guys - on my stash of Centuri 13mm B4s.

I use thrust rings on all sizes. I follow Wildman’s Second Law (No Engine Blocks!). I’d love to see 13mm B-C motors the length of 18mm motors.

Gonna pop in here just to echo the point about Facebook. I think businesses that focus their customer interactions on FB are making a huge mistake. I also think they should have more of an “official” presence both here and on YORF.

Hmm, should have said rail with a launch pad. I'll have to look around and see if I can find a way to make one with those rails. I can barely put the rockets together and those come with all the pieces and instructions!

Edit: Found a cheap and easy way to set one up. That can be one of my many projects this winter.

Also, bring back the Bigfoot Launch system. Maybe in a starter set with a "Bigfoot" rocket to match? Can't copyright a fictional creature, so no licensing fees. Lots of opportunities for an artist to go crazy with the decal. Maybe get Matt Moneymaker to do a "celebrity" endorsement.

Honestly, they're doing great things at Estes! Keep it up guys. I've bought more Estes rockets in the past year than in the last five.

Well, at least the Twister is out there. I recently picked one up from the LHS and maidened it yesterday. I replaced the 'chute with a streamer, but otherwise built it stock. Even has a balsa nose cone. Nice model, flies fantastic on A8-3 - didn't try anything larger since it flew so well on that and I have a pretty good stockpile of this motor.

The cool thing about this rocket is that the spin builds up slowly. You can see it leave the rod with no rotation and see the RPMs build up as it shoots into the sky.

I for one would love to see something more than fire and forget e2x rockets in the pro series lineup. I understand that they need a return on investment with the kicker being motor sales (ie the f15, e16 bp motors). The mdrm, scion, nike smoke are amongst my faves - shame they are OOP. They jeed to re-release them or launch something similar in their lineup.

I am going to need a bigger garage for one thing, but whatever they are doing seems to be working. Not like I needed to add to the pile, but just picked up a MULTI-ROC at HL. Just because. So, thanks for that bring back, Estes!

PS - Should look nice on the shelf next to my gyROC (another Estes bring back from SEMROC/eRockets...)

Exactly how much of Estes market are we? If we all stopped buying kits and motors, would they even notice? We all can have requests and desires but I'm not sure how much actual influence we wield.
