I was sad to see the Super Big Bertha has balsa fins

LOL, if I have to replace fins, not much need for a kit
I can 3d print the nose and cnc mill the fins fo scratch built
I stocked up on SAMMYD's blue tube in all sizes and the winter builds will be various sizes of berthas
I already have a 4" on 38mm and 8" on 75mm

Well, you do get the cool decals with the kit . . .

I have a silhouette vinyl cutter and it's easy to make one color decals, harder to make multi color.

There are definitely a lot of Californians who would love to split off and form another country, but then the rest of the country would probably go bankrupt or fragment even further into rich and poor states. You wouldn’t want to end up in one of the landlocked states with no seaports, no tax base, and no diversified economy. And you would have to come to us for your edible plywood supplies. We’d definitely have you over a barrel there, and you’d have to pay a pretty penny or end up having to eat the poisonous plywood.

It might be good to remember that back in the 1860s a couple of hundred thousand Americans died establishing that that states can not leave the Union (cf Gettysburg Address). The last time some states attempted to secede, it did not end well for them.

Plus, if California secedes and forms another country, it's "bye-bye" to ALL Federal Aid . . . Let them try "paying their own way", for a change !

Also, the states around them could erect toll booths and charge them for coming and going, in and out of California . . . Non-residents of California are exempt from the tolls !

Require Passports to enter the USA, from California . . . Nice, since they require verification of US citizenship !

You might want to check facts on that. California sends about $13.7 billion more in taxes to the federal government than it receives back in federal spending in CA. Other states that send more to DC than they receive back are (in order by per capita tax-spending) NJ, MA, CT, NY, IL, MN, NH, [CA], WY, NE, and UT. The states with the highest dependence on the federal purse by the same measure are NM, WV, MS, VA, and AL.

Well, since they send out more than they take in, California shouldn't miss zero Federal assistance, at all. Plus, they wouldn't be paying taxes to the government. However, as an independent nation, their people would no longer be entitled to Federal assistance, either ( Welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, etc. ) . . . Frankly, I hope that California secedes.

Now, back to rocketry !

Guys, we probably ought to get back to the topic at hand. Sorry I rose to the bait, but it gets tiring listening to other forum members bag on my awesome state all the time, and having a fellow member suggest the country would be better off without my state kind of pissed me off, especially considering all California has contributed to our great nation and continues to contribute today. Obviously, the US is not going to balkanize and splinter into a bunch of different smaller countries, and to do so would be a major mistake for all involved, so it’s pointless to discuss. Let’s all just pause for a second and consider everything that each of us contributes to the Union and move on. Kumbaya. Hakuna matata. Eep opp ork ah-ah.

So... how’s about dem PSII kits?

Thanks. I would recommend that we focus on Estes and Rockets (The topic of this thread) and avoid vilifying California.

Hope they bring back more of them - by the way, I live in Southern California, and other than restrictive rules for model rockets, I love living here!

You are in Orange County? I was just there a week ago. My nephew and his wife just bought a really nice house in Garden Grove, so we stopped by to see it. Beautiful! He took us out to the Katella Deli. Delicious! We were on a road trip from our home in the Bay Area to visit my parents in San Diego, so we visited some friends in Palos Verdes Estates the first night and had dinner on the bluffs overlooking the ocean. Gorgeous! Then down to San Diego for a week of going to the beach, enjoying the weather, and eating our way through town. Lots of Mexican food an an epic Uber-driven pub crawl with my brother and sister. Fantastic! It’s amazing how many breweries have opened there. Literally dozens. On the drive back home, we spent the night in Paso Robles and went to our favorite winery for a tasting then out to dinner a really unique place. Wonderful! On the last day, we cut over to the coast at Cambria and drove up Hwy 1 to Monterey past all the glorious vistas over the Pacific and then cut inland to home. Not bad for a week of travel on about 80 bucks worth of gas. This state has so much to offer!

While I was in San Diego, my dad gave me an old built NCR Big Brute rocket that he had been given by a friend. Nice rocket, similar in size to a PSII MDRM, but lighter. I’m going to have to build an adapter for the odd-size NCR motor mount. In addition to PSII, the NCR kits would be great for Estes to bring back, but I won’t hold my breath!

The North Coast Rocketry By Estes (NCRBE) was a good product line with an excellent F62 motor.

The NCRBE line came about due to a licensing agreement between Estes and NCR. The agreement stated when royalties would be paid to NCR.

The product sold pretty well. As sales were about to reach the threshold when royalties would have to be paid, 'Darth Tunick' cancelled the product line.

It would be unlikely for the NCRBE product line to return but anything is possible.

Folks around here sure have a short memory.

When the original PSII kits were first released, the posts here on TRF were full of negative comments:

"Too expensive! I can get a better rocket form another company."

"No decals?!"

"Weird sized body tubes and parts."

"What a wimpy shock cord attachment method."

The original PSII models only became popular after they didn't sell very well and were put on closeout by many vendors.

"We" are in part responsible for the demise of the original PSII product line.

Folks can learn the errors of their ways... Though the cost issue all depends on the budget of the customer. I couldn't afford them when I first jumped back into the hobby (Hell, I really couldn't afford to buy a Mosquito, only luck (and a decent take making balloon animals) would allow me to grow my fleet back then).

I wasn't doing rockets when the PSII line came out, but now I’m sorry I missed the early ones.

How long have they been making the composite motors? Seems like they didn’t miss the heavier PSII line by much. I’m wondering if they planned to come out at the same time with them but they got held up.

Estes has never made composite motors afaik, all their composites were re-branded Aerotech, even the North Coast Rocketry's motors were re-branded AT motors sold by Estes.

Well, how long have they been selling Composite motors with their name on them? Looks like they were around at the same time as the earlier PSII line.

Yes, that's what I remember too, they released their PSII line when they released "their" composite Single Use motors. it was then discovered that they are private labeled AT motors. And some, apparently, the label had to be peeled off to get the motor to fit into the MMT.

Also, some hobby shops didn't want to carry this new motor line. And, many were balking at the price for these new motors, being the cost of 2 or 3 BP motors.. And then the need for a new launch controller (and new battery).. And the need for a larger launch area... It just seemed like an awful added expense to get the next level of Estes kits for the newbie / back yard flyer..

The 'North Coast Rocketry By Estes' (NCRBE) F62 Dark Star motors were made by Vulcan Systems, Inc.

You may be confusing this with the release of the North Coast Rocketry By Estes (NCRBE) product line.

Estes intentionally used a smaller inside diameter motor mount tube (28.5mm vs. 29mm) so that single-use AeroTech motors would not fit in the NCRBE kits.
