Scott,
Assuming you belong to both, once you certify L1, L2, or L3 in either organization you can send a copy of the signed certification form to the other organization’s HQ and you will receive the same certification level. You don’t have to fly two different certification flights. You should still fly as many flights as you can, but this way you don’t have to worry about failing the second flight.

I do belong to both but certifying for both gives me more excuses to fly with different groups, even if I fail one or two.

Well, look at it from an administrative perspective. Suppose you certify with NAR, then a week later instead of transferring your certification you try to fly your cert flight with Tripoli and fail. Now what? Are you certified or not with Tripoli?
It’s better to just transfer your certifications as you earn them. You can take turns earning then at one or the other organization if you want.

Scott,

You should do your Certifications through NAR, for one very important reason.

If you certify through Tripoli and ever let your Membership lapse, you will lose your certification and have to re-certify at each level you previously attained. With the NAR, once you certify, you never lose your certification, if your membership lapses. Also, once you have certified, you can transfer your cert levels to Tripoli . . . Instant dual-certification in NAR & Tripoli !

It’s true that NAR restores certifications no matter how long you drop out, but it doesn’t matter who the original certification was done with as long as it was transferred to NAR while current.

I did my L1 last March with a Madcow Patriot on an I140 to about 2300ft or so

Certified L-1 on August 3rd but neglected post it on this thread. Better late than never, I suppose, so here it is!

I certified with an extended LOC Forte at the AARG Apache Pass launch. It was a perfect flight and an easy recovery (Not in the corn, in other words...). Wasn't even a long walk to pick it up!

The Forte flew on an Aerotech I-135 White Lightning to ~2500 feet. Motor ejection was used just to keep things simple and the ten second delay threw the laundry right at apogee, best as I could tell. Recovery was by a 30" Top Flight chute.

I haven't been with AARG for very long, but they are a great group and I'm really having fun getting to know everyone. I'd especially like to thank Jim Jarvis, Harry "The Motorman" Spears and all the folks at AARG for helping out the new guy!

Thanks again for a great day guys!

Mike

Well my excuse for not posting my L1 pic in this thread is...... I didn't know this thread (or it's sister threads) existed until this evening!

L1 on 09.29.18 @Bong with Woosh hosting

Rocket: Mac 3" BlackFly
Recovery: Drogue - 18" TFR UltraX, Main - 30" TFR Crossfire
Motor: AT H148R-10
Apogee: ??? OpenRocket put it at a tad over 2K ft.

Sorry, no in-flight or recovery pics.

On the pad.

Recertification to L1 (was previously in 2002ish) was on August 24 2019 at Silica with LARS. Flew on an I205 single use (a 29mm I, didn't even know such a thing existed). Perfect flight and recovery. Same rocket flew level 2 two weekends later on a J425.

Rocket is a 4" scratch built PML quantum tube rocket. Simmed to 1400' or so on RockSim, no altimeter on board so not really sure.

100% scratch built upscale of an Estes Thunderhawk.

Hand rolled tubes over 2.5" OD exhaust tubing with 7781 e-glass to 0.050". 3-piece 3D printed nose cone. Used the same glass to glass 3mm craft plywood for fins and centering rings. Eggtimer quark for dual deploy, mounted on a 3D printed sled between 3D printed bulkheads. Nomex 14" drogue and parachute protectors and a 12-gore nakka pattern 38" main chute.

Came in at 4.8lb wet with an H180W.

I spent way too much time building this one.IMG_20191116_160633~2.jpeg
