Hey, I’m new to the forum. I have been reading posts on here suggesting alternative wadding, such as DIY toilet paper and baking soda wadding, leaf lettuce, crepe paper and nomax sheets. Here in the UK, an online rocket store is selling a square of nomax for £9.99 (then an extra £6 for delivery) which I guess is good in the long run as it is permanent. However wouldn’t any aramid cloth fabric work? Here is an online UK store selling aramid cloth for only £5.00 for 250mm x 1 metre. Would this work?

Our club honcho uses aramid cloth in place of Nomex since he can get it cheaper. But make sure you compare the thicknesses as well as the price. Cheers.

PS forgot to mention, neither Nomex nor Aramid is "permanent", they will char and burn from the hot embers. But they will not sustain a burn, making them fire resistant. Some of my Nomex protectors have pin holes in them from embers. And make sure you are getting a genuine product. Lots of stuff claiming to be Nomex or Aramid out there that are not even fire resistant. From the DuPont website: "Nomex fabric will burn after a few seconds exposure to an open flame. But it will self extinguish within five seconds after removal from the heat source".

Most don't understand that Nomex and Aramid are just brand names. There are a number of companies that make very close to the same fabric.
