It seems as though no one is talking about NARAM 61 in Muncie IN. Is there some government conspiracy to hush it up? o_O It looks like it is going to be a blast and Pem-Tech will be on the Sport Range as fliers and vendors. May even try for my L3 on a 4" version of my HMAS Bonestel.
Hope to see you there.

I am hoping to be able to go. Still waiting on my Dad and Aunt to let me know when the Family reunion is so I can figure out schedules.

If I do get to go, I am hoping to try for my L1 on a LOC IV.

I'm registered and have my hotel all lined up. Already started working on the competition stuff I'll need there and have a few models in progress for sport flying. See you there!

This made me laugh. I know it is extremely challenging to host a large event, and I'm not complaining... but more details and more info are always helpful.

I have yet to make our final plans, but we will probably attend only Saturday 7/27. We have a very unique cardstock Saturn V that I need to build, and would like to fly. The on-field BBQ sounds like fun. Night Launch - a family specialty of ours - and the main reason for attending. We don't really participate in "official" NAR competition , but would love to have some details on the "H 3-egg loft". That sounds like fun, but it's hard to prep for something when the goal/objective is not clearly defined.

We might want to visit the AMA museum - time permitting... and on Sunday or Monday I'm thinking a side trip to Wright-Patterson would be cool.

As of today the host hotel is sold out both weekends so I had to book somewhere else, which is kind of a bummer. Gonna skip the competition and devote the entire week to the sport range. I too would like to see more info on the “H” egg loft event. Looking forward to seeing your L2 flight Layne, i think the only time we’ve met was at Southern Thunder 2009 when you were hawking rocket koozies along with your kits?

HA! That seems like forever ago. Trying to decide whether to be a vendor or just a flyer. L2 test! Crap, have to start studying.

Well, glad I made you laugh. But it is kind of frustrating not to have a point of contact to answer questions. Just a form to submit questions would be great.
Definitely hitting the AMA museum. How far is Wright-Patterson?

Brian Guzek is the NARAM 61 contest director. His contact info is on the N61 website, but his email is [email protected].

Or, you can also email me at [email protected], and I can pass along your questions.

Thanks,
Carol Marple

Just a heads up, Chris' Rocket Supplies is planning to attend from the July 27-29.

Hey all, new member...bear with me. Certified TRA Level 1 already here in Michigan. Planning on attending NARAM-61 on the way back from Cedar Point since we will be there for a ball tourney the last week of July. Wondering if there will be a local or attending prefect that would be able to administer the Level 2 test to me and upon success, LCO inspect and witness a Level 2 attempt?? Hoping to make this trip a double dip (Tourney and Certification) with always the option to stick around and watch some great flights afterwards with the wife.

Thanks for the help in advance.
Eric

I'm local and L2 but not sure I'll be able to make it most of the days due to work commitments. I'm planning on the weekend days. There are a few L2s in the club but most are NAR exclusive.

If you check the NARAM schedule, they have two L2 exam sessions scheduled for Saturday and Wednesday nights. I know some of these folks are L2 in both organizations so check with the NARAM folks to be sure.

Thanks All! I will definitely get a hold of NARAM in advance. Thank you so much for the quick responses! Outstanding!

Hello Eric,

If you are a NAR L1 member you should have no trouble getting the NAR L2 test, and after that a NAR member to witness your flight attempt. - However...

If you are a TRA member -only... that's a bit different. You will need to pass the TRA test. You can take the TRA test at any time - including before NARAM.

**The cert flight for TRA L2 must be witnessed by a TRA Prefect, TRA Director, or a TRA TAP member (not just any L2 TRA member)**

After building and flying model rockets on and off for Almost 40 years, I’ve decided it’s time to finally attend NARAM. I’ve never done any contest flying and was thinking about entering a couple events while I’m there.

I have a very basic question: are launch pads provided for the competitive events ?
I’m guessing a lot (all ?) of the competitors probably use their own tower or piston launchers for the altitude events, but I’m traveling from the west coast, have never used a piston launcher, and was hoping to keep things simple (even if I end up not being that competitive). I looked at the NAR website and read up on the contest info, but didn’t find much on the conduct of the contest itself, especially at NARAM. I appreciate any sage advice you can provide an old rookie !

Greetings

The Naram contest range is usually 18 satellite pads that have a basic 1/8th launch rod. You use the leads over to your tower or piston launcher to hook up.

Hmmm...might be more wise to try and take the test up here before traveling South for the level 2 flight attempt. Need to find a
that will be around NARAM though....

I take the test this Saturday here in Michigan. Was wondering if a TRA Prefect, TRA Director or TRA TAP member will be at NARAM-61?

Any takers? :)

Indianarocketry is a Tripoli prefecture based in Lafayette, IN. That is about 90 minutes from the NARAM launch site. There are 3 TAPs listed on the club's website. Might be able to convince one of them to show up too. I know Vic and Doug have been to the Muncie site many times as I've launched with them there before.

More Outstanding News!! Thank you very much for the information!

I believe Chris Short is "tbonerocketeer" here....

Watch out about "a couple of events". I went to NARAM-56 figuring it would be my one and only....and last year wound up reserve meet champion at NARAM-60 and am in the throes of building and test flying models for NARAM-61 even though it will take me four days to drive there.....

Oh and yes, as noted above, pads and power are provided. At NARAM-60 launch rods of 1/8, 3/16 and even 1/4 inch were made available but if you want to use a tower or are using pistons, or both, you need to bring your own or arrange to borrow from other competitors. Any specialized launchers for, say, boost gliders or rocket gliders are also on the contestant. My own flying at NARAM-60 was partly on the provided rods and partly out of my own towers (The Apogee one and a simple one especially for my B Cluster Altitude models).

The actual process of flying was new to me my first time (though they also use it at the TARC finals, not surprisingly). The pads are numbered and you are assigned one when you check in for the flight. You go do whatever you need to prep the model to be ready to fly (though you may be asked to step back while someone is being launched from an adjacent pad). When you are ready you pick up the paddle that's on the ground with your pad number and hold it up so that the LCO can see it. You will then be "in the queue" to be launched and the model will be launched when its turn comes up.
